Margaret A. Mahoney was an American Democratic politician from Ohio. She held a number of political positions and served in the state's House and Senate and was the first Democratic woman elected to the Ohio Senate and the first woman majority leader of the chamber. Mahoney was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame in 1978. [1]
Born in Cleveland,Ohio,Mahoney attended evening classes at Cleveland's West High School of Commerce to graduate from high school. [2] She graduated from John Marshall School of Law after working as a salesperson and a secretary. [3] Mahoney was the legislative chair for a number of women's organizations,which led her to become interested in running for the state legislature. [2] She was first elected to political office in 1938 as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. [1] Mahoney served in both chambers of the Ohio state legislature,and became the first Democratic woman elected to the Ohio Senate in 1942. [3] She was from 1949 to 1950 the Senate President Pro Tem and Majority Leader,and was the first woman to hold that role. [1] [4] She also served on a number of committees including the Senate Rules Committee. [2]
In March 1951,Mahoney was appointed Chief of the State Securities Division upon leaving the Senate. [5] She held numerous political offices,often being the first woman to hold the position,including Director of the Department of Industrial Relations of Ohio from 1953 to 1957;and was a member of the Cleveland Civil Service Commission and the Director of the Department of Industrial Relations. [1] [3] She was a Presidential Elector and Delegate to the Democratic National Convention multiple times, [1] [6] and was the only woman on the Ohio State Council of Defense during World War II. [1]
As of 2019,Mahoney is still the only woman to hold the top leadership position in the Ohio Senate. [7]

She was the first Democratic woman elected to the United States Congress from that state. Oakar was also the first woman of Arab-American ancestry to serve in Congress. Oakar later served as a member of the Ohio State Board of Education.
Capri Silvestri Cafaro is a former Democratic member of the Ohio Senate,representing the 32nd District from 2007 to 2016. From the Mahoning Valley,Cafaro served three terms as an Ohio State Senator,including a stint as Minority Leader from 2009 to 2012. Margaret Anderson Kelliher is an American politician,Director of the Minneapolis Department of Public Works,former Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Transportation,and a former member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party,she represented District 60A,which includes portions of the city of Minneapolis in Hennepin County,located in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. First elected in 1999,she served until 2011,also serving as the Speaker from 2007 to 2011. She is the second woman to hold the position of House speaker. She was an unsuccessful candidate for the DFL nomination for Governor of Minnesota in the 2010 gubernatorial election,losing to former Senator Mark Dayton. Anderson left the Minnesota House of Representatives at the conclusion of her term in 2011 and re-entered politics when she ran for the DFL nomination to the U.S. House of Representatives in Minnesota's 5th congressional district in 2018,losing to Ilhan Omar. Since 2019 Kelliher,has worked in transportation management roles for the government,first as Commissioner of MnDOT,and later as Director of Public Works for the city of Minneapolis.

Within the Montana State Legislature,32.7 percent of all members were women in 2022. From statehood in 1889 to 2021,the state of Montana had only one female governor,Judy Martz. Although the first woman to be elected to the United States Congress was from Montana in 1916,the state had not elected another woman to Congress as of 2021.
