Mary R. Koch was a 274.330-metric-ton (269.997-long-ton; 302.397-short-ton) combined ore carrier and oil tanker. [3] The ship was named after Mary Robinson Koch, wife of American industrialist Fred C. Koch. [4]

Mary R. Koch was built at the Uljanik, Brodogradiliste l Tvornica Dizel Motora shipyard in Pula in Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, (now Croatia). [5] Her two sister ships, Tafala and Torne were delivered to the Swedish company Trafikaktiebolaget Grengesberg in 1974. [5] A further sister ship named Kanchenjunga was built as a pure oil carrier with no ore capability.

Under Greek management Mary R. Koch (callsign A8QU) was time-chartered to Exxon for three years from going into service. Subsequently she made spot voyages arranged by the oil-trading division of Koch Industries. Around 1980 Koch Shipping was created and Mary R. Koch was managed directly from Wichita, with officers and crew being supplied by an agency in Piraeus. Due to severe corrosion problems with piping in the 'void space' double bottom the ship transferred to the bulk-ore trade in the early 1980s.

The four ships of this design were built to prove the practicality of the KaMeWa variable pitch propeller system in high SHP applications. Although the system did function well the high initial and subsequent maintenance costs associated with having two 20,000 hp (15,000 kW) B&W diesel engines, together with the inferior steel used for the cargo piping, compounded by the depressed tanker market at the time, meant that they were never viable economically.

She was carrying ore from Brazil to Japan, and returning with crude oil from the Persian Gulf to Europe or America. The ship had build number 296 at the Uljanik shipyard in the port city Pula in then SFR Yugoslavia where it was built in 1972.

Handysize

Handysize is a naval architecture term for smaller bulk carriers or oil tanker with deadweight of up to 50,000 tonnes, although there is no official definition in terms of exact tonnages. Handysize is also sometimes used to refer to the span of up to 60,000 tons, with the vessels above 35,000 tonnes referred to as Handymax or Supramax.

The history of the oil tanker is part of the evolution of the technology of oil transportation alongside the oil industry.

The National Iranian Tanker Company is a subsidiary of the National Iranian Oil Company, which was privatized in 2009. As of 2011, NITC was owned by funds managing pensions for 5 million Iranians. It is the biggest tanker company in the Middle East. The company transports Iranian crude to export markets and also engages in cross-trading of crude oil cargoes for some 150 oil majors worldwide, including Royal Dutch Shell, Total SA, Saudi Aramco and state-run producers in Kuwait and Abu Dhabi. NITC has a capacity of 11 million tons per year.

The Iran Marine Industrial Company, also known as SADRA, was founded in 1968 as a small ship repair yard in Bushehr. Since then, SADRA has established itself as the leading shipbuilding and shiprepairing company in Iran. SADRA is also active in offshore oil & gas development. SADRA specializes in building ships, docks and floating oil rigs. Sadra Group is a sister company of Iran's state-owned Iran Shipbuilding and Offshores Industries Complex Co. (ISOICO). As of April 2009, the IRGC-controlled construction conglomerate, Khatam al-Anbia owns a controlling stake in SADRA.

Cosmo Ace, formerly A Whale and Madison Orca, is a Liberian-flagged ore-oil carrier built in 2010 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, Ulsan, South Korea for TMT Co. Ltd. from the Republic of China (Taiwan). She has seven other sister ships in the fleet, built in 2010-2011 and named in succession: B Whale, C Whale etc., to H Whale.

T3 tanker

The T3 tanker, or T3, are a class of seaworthy large tanker ships produced in the United States and used to transport fuel oil, gasoline or diesel before and during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The T3 tanker classification is still used today. The T3 tanker has a full load displacement of about 24,830 tons.

MS <i>Ore Brasil</i> Very large ore carrier ship

MS Ore Brasil, previously known as Vale Brasil, is a very large ore carrier owned by the Brazilian mining company Vale. She is the first of seven 400,000-ton very large ore carriers (VLOC) ordered by Vale from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in South Korea and twelve from Jiangsu Rongsheng Heavy Industries in China, which are designed to carry iron ore from Brazil to Asia along the Cape route around South Africa. While close to the specifications of Chinamax, these ships are generally referred to as Valemax vessels by Vale. They are the largest bulk carriers ever built.

Uljanik Plovidba d.d. is a Croatian ship management company. Founded in 1986 and based in Pula, the company owns and operates three bulk carriers and five tankers, which are all leased to contractors. The company also provides ship management services to fleets owned by other shipping companies.

MV <i>Vale Rio de Janeiro</i>

MV Vale Rio de Janeiro, owned by the Brazilian mining company Vale, is one of the world's largest very large ore carriers and a sister ship of Vale Brasil. MV Stellar Daisy was a South Korean-owned very large ore carrier (VLOC) that sank on March 31, 2017 in the South Atlantic off the coast of Uruguay while on a voyage from Brazil to China. She was the largest ship, by a factor of over three on gross tonnage, to be lost at sea.
