The tour started immediately after Christmas and ended in mid-January. Michael Mence, a member of the 1976-77 MCC team, was the captain of the side, which included three former Test players, John Jameson, John Hampshire, and Richard Hutton. [1]

Michael David Mence was an English cricketer. Mence was a left-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He was born at Newbury, Berkshire.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) tour of Bangladesh during the winter of 1976/77 marked the entrance of Bangladesh into international cricket. Though the tour was very short, it gave the Bangladeshi players their first taste of international cricket.

John Alexander Jameson is a former English cricketer who played in four Test matches and three One Day Internationals for the England cricket team between 1971 and 1975. Jameson played for Warwickshire County Cricket Club from 1960 until 1976.

The MCC team

Mohamed Asif Din is a former English cricketer who played county cricket for Warwickshire from 1981 to 1995. A right-handed batsman and occasional legbreak bowler, he is most famous for scoring a hundred and winning the man-of-the-match award in the 1993 Natwest Trophy final, widely regarded as the best domestic final.

John Harry Hampshire, also known as Jack Hampshire, was an English cricketer and umpire, who played eight Tests and three One Day Internationals (ODIs) for England between 1969 and 1975. He played first-class cricket for Yorkshire from 1961 to 1981, and for Derbyshire from 1982 to 1984. Overseas, he was a successful captain of Tasmania in the period before the state was included in the Sheffield Shield. He was also appointed President of Yorkshire County Cricket Club in 2016, serving until his death.

Richard Anthony Hutton is a former English cricketer, who played in five Test matches for the England cricket team in 1971. A right-handed batsman and right-arm seam bowler, Hutton's bowling was probably his stronger discipline, but he was considered an all-rounder. He played first-class cricket for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. He is the son of Len Hutton.

In the first match, Central Zone just managed to avoid defeat. The fearsome bowling of the tall fast bowler Wilson created havoc in the local camp.

Peter Hugh L'Estrange Wilson played first-class and List A cricket for Surrey and Somerset in England and for Northern Transvaal in South Africa. He was born at Guildford, Surrey.

At Faridpur, in the first innings the MCC batting collapsed badly against the medium pace of Obaidul Haq Azam. His 7/18 was the best bowlng by a Bangladeshi bowler at the time, breaking Syed Ashraful's record of 7/23 in the 1979 ICC Trophy against Fiji. Also, this match marked the international debut for Gazi Ashraf Lipu. He went to play a significant role in the development of Bangladesh cricket.

Faridpur District District in Dhaka Division, Bangladesh

Faridpur is a district in south-central Bangladesh. It is a part of the Dhaka Division. It is bounded by the Padma River to its northeast. The district is named after the municipality of Faridpur. Historically, the town was known as Fatehabad. It was also called Haveli Mahal Fatehabad.

Gazi Ashraf Hossain, commonly known as Lipu, is a former Bangladeshi cricketer who played and captained the Bangladesh national cricket team in its first seven One Day International (ODI) matches, two in the 1986 Asia Cup, three in the 1988 Asia Cup, and two in the 1990 Austral-Asia Cup.

The Chittagong match was abandoned early on the 2nd day due to bad weather. The infamous weather of Chittagong intervened to spoil the match. Raquibul Hasan was specially unlucky, as he looked set for his first hundred in Bangladeshi colours.

Chittagong Metropolis in Chittagong Division, Bangladesh

Chittagong, officially known as Chattogram, is a major coastal city and financial centre in southeastern Bangladesh. The city has a population of more than 2.5 million while the metropolitan area had a population of 4,009,423 in 2011, making it the second-largest city in the country. It is the capital of an eponymous District and Division. The city is located on the banks of the Karnaphuli River between the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Bay of Bengal.

The drawn match at Rajshahi was dominated by the spinners of both the sides. The slow turning pitch made strokeplay extremely difficult. The Bangladeshi top order batting collapsed against the spin of Dermott Monteith on the 1st day. But the lower order, led by captain Hira and ever reliable Jahangir Shah fought back. Off spinner, Anwarul Amin Azhar showed class during the MCC innings. Only the veteran, Jameson, on his 2nd tour of Bangladesh could handle him properly. Azhar is widely regarded as the best Bangladeshi spinner of the decade. [2] The Bangladesh batting collapsed again in the 2nd innings, but young Mujibul Haq stood firm to save the match.

Rajshahi Metropolis in Rajshahi Division, Bangladesh

Rajshahi is a metropolitan city, and a major urban, commercial and educational centre of Bangladesh. It is also the administrative seat of eponymous division and district. Located on the north bank of the Padma River, near the Bangladesh-India border, the city has a population of over 763,952 residents. The city is surrounded by the satellite towns of Nowhata and Katakhali, which together build an urban agglomeration of about 1 million population.

Dermott Monteith Irish cricketer

James Dermott Monteith was an Irish international cricketer. Monteith was a right-handed batsman who bowled slow left-arm orthodox. Monteith was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Queens University Belfast.

Jahangir Shah Badsha is a former Bangladeshi cricketer who played in 5 ODIs from 1986 to 1990. He is sometimes known on scoresheets by his nickname Badshah.

Raquibul Hasan scored half centuries in each innings at Dhaka. He got good support from the opener Yousuf Babu in the 2nd innings. But the match belonged to Mark Nicholas. Batting at number three, the Hampshire batsman amassed the first century by an MCC player against Bangladesh. The only match to produce a result was the one-day match where the inexperience of the local players in the shorter version of the game was exposed. [3]

These matches saw the emergence of a number of talented youngsters in Bangladesh cricket, like Gazi Ashraf Lipu, Rafiqul Alam, Mujibul Haq, Nehal Hasnain, Obiadul Haq Azam, Nadir Shah, and Manjur Ahmed Manju. While some of them failed to live up to the expectations, Lipu, Rafiq & Nehal went on to play vital role in Bangladesh cricket throughout the 80s. [4]

Syed Ashraful Haq is a former Bangladeshi cricketer. He was the architect of Bangladesh's first ever ICC Trophy victory, over Fiji in May 1979. His 7/23 from 9.2 overs completely destroyed the Fiji middle order, leading Bangladesh to a 22 run win. He was also a member of the Bangladesh side that played in the historic match at Dhaka against the MCC in January 1977. A right hand batsman and an off break bowler, Ashraful remained an integral part of the national side until his retirement in 1981-82 season.

Yousuf Rahman was a Bangladeshi cricketer, who played regularly for the national side from 1976-77 until his retirement in 1983-84. He top scored with 78 against the MCC at Dhaka in January 1977. He was the first Bangladeshi to score an international hundred, with 115 against PNG in 1982. In the early part of his career, he used to bat in the middle order, but from 1979-80 season onwards he was a regular opener. He was also a useful medium pacer.

Omar Mohammad Khaled is a Bangladeshi cricketer. A middle order batsman and a leg spin googley bowler, he played regularly for the national side between 1976–77 to 1983–84.

Mainul Haque, commonly known as Mainu, was a Bangladeshi cricketer who played for the Bangladesh side in the famous cricket match against the MCC at Dhaka in 1976-77. In the following season, against Sri Lanka he acted as the Vice Captain of the side, helping Raquibul Hasan. A right-handed middle-order batsman, he scored 39 at Faridpur and 43 at Chittagong against Sri Lanka. In February 1978, he shared a century partnership with Raquibul Hasan against the touring Decan Blues side from India.

Anwarul Amin Azhar, commonly known as Azhar, is a former Bangladeshi cricketer. A right arm off-break bowler, Azhar played for the national side in the first half of the 1980s.

The First South-East Asian Cricket Tournament was held in Dhaka in January 1984. Two teams from the host country were joined by teams from Singapore and Hong Kong. The Bangladesh national team won the trophy, and thus qualified for the 1986 Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

In March 1983, the West Bengal side from India came to Dhaka, for a short tour. The side was led by Dilip Doshi. The visitors convincingly won both their matches.

In December 1983, the Bangladesh cricket team made a short tour to West Bengal. This followed the tour made by West Bengal, led by Dilip Doshi, earlier in the year. Bangladesh won their matches against the district oppositions, but lost the most significant match at Eden Gardens against West Bengal.

The tour, during March, 1986, was in preparation for Bangladesh's participation in the 2nd Asia Cup, later that month. Also, this tour can be considered as a follow up of the tour of a Pak side, led by Imran Khan, during early January.Out of the 6 matches played, the tourists won 2, and lost the remaining 4.

The tour of the Bangladesh team to Kenya, during February, 1984, was the first visit of Bangladesh to any associate member country. The tour started a rivalry which became very intense in the 1990s. On this tour, Bangladesh drew the only 3-Day fixture, won a 2-day match, but won only 1 of the 5 limited over matches(That too against the Combined School XI). Overall, it was a disappointing tour for the Bangladesh side.

Rangpur Riders

The Rangpur Riders are a professional cricket team based in Rangpur City, Rangpur. The Riders compete in Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the premier cricket league in Bangladesh. The Riders are headquartered at the Bashundhara Residential Area in Dhaka. They use Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium for most home games.

The West Indian cricket team toured the United Arab Emirates from September to November 2016 to play three Twenty20 International (T20Is), three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Test matches against Pakistan. The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) agreed in principle for one of the Test matches to be played as a day/night match.

Nehal Hasnain Chowdhury is a Bangladeshi ICC Trophy cricketer. A right hand top order batsman, he represented Bangladesh in the 1986 ICC Trophy in England. There he acted as the deputy to captain Gazi Ashraf.

Nazrul Quader, also known as Lintu, was a left arm spin bowler from Bangladesh. He was a member of the Bangladesh cricket team that played against the MCC in the historical match at Dhaka in 1976-77.
