The Wreck of the Titan: Or, Futility is an 1898 novella written by Morgan Robertson. The story features the fictional ocean liner Titan, which sinks in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg. Titan and its sinking have been noted to be very similar to the real-life passenger ship RMS Titanic, which sank fourteen years later. Following the sinking of the Titanic, the novel was reissued with some changes, particularly in the ship's gross tonnage.
HMS Picotee was a Flower-class corvette that served in the Royal Navy. She was built at Harland and Wolff, launched on 21 March 1940 and completed on 5 September 1940. Under the command of Lieutenant R.A. Harrison, she was tasked to convoy escort operations in the North Atlantic. She was torpedoed and sunk on the morning of 12 August 1941 by U-568. SS Tauric was an ocean liner built in 1891 by Harland and Wolff for the White Star Line and completed on 16 May 1891. Though designed as a livestock carrier, Tauric carried a small amount of cabin-(second-) and steerage-(third-) class passengers. Her maiden voyage began at Liverpool and ended at New York. After this, Tauric began running the Liverpool to Portland, Maine route. In 1903, the White Star Line had the ship chartered to the Dominion Line, now taking on the name Welshman. The Dominion Line in turn transferred her to the Leyland Line in 1921. She was scrapped eight years later, in 1929.

Hugh Anderson was a cowboy and gunfighter who participated in the infamous Gunfight at Hide Park on August 19, 1871, in Newton, Kansas. Prior to the gunfight, Anderson was a son of a wealthy Bell County, Texas cattle rancher who drove from Salado, Texas to Newton. Anderson was the one who led the cowboy faction during the gunfight, and was also one of the first to draw blood.
