Md Shafeenul Islam BGBM(Bar), ndc, psc is a former Major General in Bangladesh Army and former Director General of Border Guards Bangladesh. [1]

Early life

Shafeenul Islam was born on 2 March 1966 in Tilakpur, Joypurhat District. He joined the Bangladesh Military Academy on 25 June 1984. He was commissioned with 14th BMA Long Course on 27 June 1986 in the Corps of Infantry of the Bangladesh Army. [2] He is a graduate of Defence Services Command and Staff College and National Defence College, Bangladesh. [3] He obtained two master's degrees in defence studies, one from National University, Bangladesh and the other from King Abdul Aziz University, Saudi Arabia. [4] [5] [6]

Career

Shafeen has commanded several units or formations including an infantry battalion, a battle-group and two infantry brigades. As a staff officer, he served as the brigade major of an infantry brigade, and then served as an instructor at the School of Infantry & Tactics and at the Defence Services Command and Staff College, in Mirpur. He has also served in the DGFI as Director CIB, AFD as DG Intelligence. [6]

His operational service includes a deployment in support of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq as an observer. [7]

He was appointed to the Bangladesh Tea Board on 14 February 2016 as its chairman, [8] where he promoted the diversification of tea products including introducing pickles made from tea to the Bangladesh Tea Expo. [3] He was appointed as the Director General of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) in March 2018 replacing Major General Abul Hossain. [8] [9] [3] On 18 February 2022, Major General Shakil Ahmed became the director general of BGB by replacing him and General Shafeen was brought back to the armed forces from deputation. [10]

Achievements

As the DG BGB, Shafeen reduced border violence. [11] Within a short period as DG, he visited almost all the remote bordering areas and border outposts, where he talked with deployed BGB members and inquired about their well-being. [12] [13] Shafeen has also assisted the government to handle Rohingya issues along the border. [14] [15] [16]

Shafeenul Islam was praised by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, for his efforts to diversify tea products including using tea to make pickles and cosmetic products. [3]

Family life

Shafeenul is married to Shoma Islam. The couple have only a daughter. [17] Shafeen's father, Colonel Md Nurul Islam, an Army Medical Corps officer also served in the Bangladesh Army for 33 years before retiring in 1994. His only brother, Air Commodore Sitwat Nayeem, [18] is a fighter pilot in the Bangladesh Air Force and his sister, Shahneela Islam, is self employed. [7] [6]

Major General Shakil Ahmed was a two star general of the Bangladesh Army and the head of Bangladesh Rifles. He was commissioned in the Regiment of Artillery in 1976. He was a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College, Malaysia. A former Distinguished Allied Graduate from Field Artillery Officers Advanced Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma of the US Army, he had been a Directing Staff at Defence Services Command and Staff College in Mirpur, Dhaka. He was also an instructor at Artillery School and commanded a Artillery Brigade. He also served as a sector commander of the Bangladesh Rifles.

Maqsood Ahmad, HI(M), is a retired three star officer of Pakistan Army and current chairman of Punjab Public Service Commission.

Abul Hossain, ndc, psc, is a retired lieutenant general of Bangladesh Army. He served as the director general of Border Guards Bangladesh(BGB). Before that he served as military secretary to President Md Abdul Hamid and as Engineer-in-Chief at Army Headquarters, Commandant of Military Institute of Science and Technology, Chief Engineer of Dhaka City Corporation, Director of Special Works Organization and Director of Works and Chief Engineer of the Bangladesh Army. He was also ex-officio Chairman of Shimanto Bank which is a sister concern of BGB Welfare Trust.

Shimanto Bank PLC. is a schedule commercial bank in Bangladesh and related to the Border Guards Bangladesh. As the slogan goes "Shimanhin Astha", Shimanto Bank Limited aims to be the leading financial institution to serve with utmost trust. Rafiqul Islam is the chief executive officer and managing director of the bank. Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, director general of Border Guards Bangladesh, is the chairman of the bank.

The 2015 Bangladesh–Arakan Army border clash took place between 25 August 2015 and 26 August 2015 in the Bandarban District, near the Bangladesh–Myanmar border, after several insurgents of the Arakan Army attacked members of Border Guards Bangladesh.

Sheikh Mohammad Shafiuddin Ahmed is a retired Bangladeshi four star general who was Chief of Army Staff (CAS) of the Bangladesh Army, from 24 June 2021 to 23 June 2024. Prior to his appointment as CAS, he served as the quartermaster general (QMG) of Bangladesh Army as a lieutenant general. Currently he is serving as General Officer Commanding of 66th Infantry Division & Area Commander, Rangpur Area. He served as the Director General of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB). Prior to this appointment, he served as Adjutant General of Army Headquarters. Before that he was the General Officers Commanding of 19th Infantry Division in Ghatail.

AKM Nazmul Hasan is a major general in the Bangladesh Army who is the incumbent director general of the Special Security Force. Prior to that he was DG of the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).
