The rebelling regions—which were typically Muslim-majority—were persuaded into insurrection by the sedition of Turkish and Azerbaijani agents trying to destabilise Armenia in order to form a pan-Turkic bridge between their respective nations. Though the centres of rebellion were eventually defeated, their consequences on the local Armenian populations were permanent and played a significant role in shaping the modern-day borders of Armenia.
