Meridian Metropolitans

The Meridian Metropolitans were a Cotton States League baseball team based in Meridian, Mississippi, United States that played from 1912 to 1913. [1] Orth Collins and Danny Clark played for them.

The Cotton States League name was used five times in baseball history. The first Cotton States League ran from 1902 through 1908 as a class D league. After the league shut down, another Cotton States League was reformulated in 1910, with three of the six '08 members returning for the new campaign and three new teams joining them. This league ran for four seasons, through 1913.

Orth Stein "Buck" Collins was a Major League Baseball outfielder and pitcher. Collins played for the New York Highlanders in 1904 and the Washington Senators in 1909. In 13 career games, he had six hits, all for the Highlanders, and a .250 batting average.

McNeil "Doby" Bartling was an American football player and coach of football, basketball, and baseball. He served as head football coach at Vanderbilt University from 1944 to 1945 and at Millsaps College from 1946 to 1950, compiling a career college football record of 24–18–2. Bartling was also the head basketball coach at Millsaps from 1946 to 1951, tallying a mark of 25–63, and the head baseball coach at the school from 1947 to 1949, amassing a record of 15–31. Bartling played football as a quarterback at the University of Mississippi. He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1977. Bartling came to Vanderbilt in 1943 as an assistant coach after coaching at Meridian High School in Meridian, Mississippi.

The Safeco Classic was a women's professional golf tournament on the LPGA Tour in the Seattle area, sponsored by Safeco Insurance. It was played 18 times, from 1982 to 1999, at Meridian Valley Country Club in Kent, Washington, usually in mid-September, the week following the Safeway Classic in Portland.
