Plot

All hell breaks loose in Florida when an alligator eats a lot of meth and starts killing everyone.

Production

In February 2023, the day of the release of Cocaine Bear, The Asylum announced the film on Twitter under the working title of Attack of the Meth Gator. [2] [3] [4] The next day, in a Tweet by The Asylum featuring a video of cast members complaining about the fictional titular alligator, it was confirmed that filming had completed on February 25. [5] At the 2023 San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that the film had been renamed from Attack of the Meth Gator to simply Methgator. [6]

Inspiration

Methgator is loosely inspired by reports from 2019 that a Tennessee police department publicly discouraged the flushing of methamphetamine down toilets due to the possibility that alligators could ingest the drug, creating hyper-aggressive "meth gators". [3] [4] [7] At the time of the reports, Kent Vliet, an alligator biologist at the University of Florida, denied the existence of so-called meth gators, stating that it was a "ridiculous notion". [8]

Release

Methgator was released on DVD by High Fliers Films on March 25, 2024. [9]

The illegal drug trade, drug trafficking, or narcotrafficking is a global black market dedicated to the cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale of prohibited drugs. Most jurisdictions prohibit trade, except under license, of many types of drugs through the use of drug prohibition laws. The think tank Global Financial Integrity's Transnational Crime and the Developing World report estimates the size of the global illicit drug market between US$426 and US$652 billion in 2014 alone. With a world GDP of US$78 trillion in the same year, the illegal drug trade may be estimated as nearly 1% of total global trade. Consumption of illegal drugs is widespread globally, and it remains very difficult for local authorities to reduce the rates of drug consumption.

Clandestine chemistry is chemistry carried out in secret, and particularly in illegal drug laboratories. Larger labs are usually run by gangs or organized crime intending to produce for distribution on the black market. Smaller labs can be run by individual chemists working clandestinely in order to synthesize smaller amounts of controlled substances or simply out of a hobbyist interest in chemistry, often because of the difficulty in ascertaining the purity of other, illegally synthesized drugs obtained on the black market. The term clandestine lab is generally used in any situation involving the production of illicit compounds, regardless of whether the facilities being used qualify as a true laboratory.

The Asylum is an American film production and distribution company based in Burbank, California. The company is known for producing low-budget, direct-to-video films, in particular mockbusters, which capitalize on the popularity of major studio films with similar titles and premises. The Asylum's business model revolves around producing as many low-budget films as quickly as possible, which earn around $150,000 to $250,000 in profit. Since the company produces dozens of films every year, this model generates millions of dollars, and the company claims to have never lost money on a film. The Asylum spends around 4-6 months making a film, and since the company is not affiliated with any industry guilds other than SAG-AFTRA, this means their employees will sometimes work upwards of 22 hours a day.

Depicting African-American children as alligator bait was a common trope in American popular culture in the 19th and 20th centuries. The motif was present in a wide array of media, including newspaper reports, songs, sheet music, and visual art. There is an urban legend claiming that black children or infants were in fact used as bait to lure alligators, although there is no meaningful evidence that children of any race were ever used for this purpose. In American slang, alligator bait is a racial slur for African-Americans.
