A graduate of Chaminade High School in Mineola, New York, the Boston College standout was one of several Boston-area athletes to join the American Football League's Boston Patriots. He was nicknamed "Wildman" by his Patriot teammates because of his unpredictable antics, such as running out onto Kansas City's snow-covered Municipal Stadium field clad in only his helmet and athletic supporter, hitting his head on metal locker doors or ramming his forearms through locker room walls to motivate himself. Eisenhauer was an AFL All-Star in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1966, and is a member of the Patriots All-1960s (AFL) Team.

All trains for the Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma, and Oyster Bay branches run through this station, as well as a few for the Montauk Branch. As of May 2011, 145 trains stop at this station every weekday, more than any other station east of Jamaica. It is the eighth-busiest station on the LIRR in terms of weekday boardings, with 10,348 boardings per day in 2006.

Reginald Carter was an American basketball player. At 6'3" and 175 lb (79 kg), he played as a guard. Born in New York City, he played collegiately for the St. John's University and the University of Hawaii after spending his schoolboy years starring for Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville, New York. He was selected by the National Basketball Association's New York Knicks in the 2nd round of the 1979 NBA Draft. He played with the Knicks from 1980 to 1982 for 135 games. Reggie became an assistant principal at Mineola High School before dying of a heart attack.

Addie E. McFarland High School was the segregated high school serving African American students in Mineola, Texas, from 1950 to 1965. The institution had prior been Mineola Colored High School and South Ward High School. Today, the building that served as Addie E. McFarland High School is now the Addie E. McFarland Community Center.
