Monica Milne was the first woman diplomat in the UK in 1946. [1] [2]

In 1946 the complete ban on women entering the Foreign Office was lifted, though a maximum quota of 10% was set of entrants into the administrative branch, and those employed were obliged to resign when they got married. Monica Milne was taken in in the Administrative (A) Branch in 1946. [3]

Before this, she had served with the Ministry of Economic Warfare in the US, and her performance had been so impressive that on her appointment to the Foreign Office in 1946 she was immediately posted back to Washington. She resigned after less than ten years of service because of the marriage rule. [4]

Florence Milnes

Florence Milnes MBE,, was a librarian who established the first reference library at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and ran it for more than thirty years. The library was her idea, and she persuaded the newly founded corporation that one was needed. She began the project in 1927 and by the time she retired in 1958 the library had five separate branches under her management. She was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1943 for her contribution to the national broadcaster.

Christel Boom was an East German intelligence agent who worked for the Stasi to infiltrate the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the ruling party of West Germany from 1965 to 1983.
