The NWA North American Tag Team Championship (Puerto Rico/WWC version) was a major tag team championship that was used and defended in Capitol Sports Promotions. [1] It is sometimes referred to as the WWC North American Tag Team Championship, though this isn't entirely accurate since the promotion didn't change its name from Capitol Sports Promotions to World Wrestling Council until the mid-1990s. The promotion, still in operation today, is based out of Puerto Rico and was a National Wrestling Alliance affiliate until 1988. This title was the third NWA sanctioned championship to be called NWA North American Tag Team Championship and, while its name suggests it was a nationally defended title, it was actually only used within the Puerto Rico territory.
Tag team wrestling is a type of professional wrestling in which matches are contested between teams of multiple wrestlers. A tag team may be made up of wrestlers who normally wrestle in singles competition, but more commonly are made of established teams who wrestle regularly as a unit and have a team name and identity.
The WWC Puerto Rico, WWC Lucha Libre (WWC-PR) or, , is a professional wrestling promotion based in Puerto Rico. It was originally established as Capitol Sports Promotions in 1973 by Carlos Colón Sr., Victor Jovica, and Gorilla Monsoon. It was a member of the National Wrestling Alliance until 1988. By the mid-1990s, the promotion had changed its name to the World Wrestling Council.
Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and briefly called Porto Rico, is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeast Caribbean Sea, approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southeast of Miami, Florida.

When WCCW pulled out of the NWA in 1986, the championship was renamed the World Class Wrestling Association World Heavyweight Championship. The title was unified by Jerry Lawler with the AWA World Heavyweight Championship in 1989 and continued as the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Championship. World Class returned in September 1990 when the organization withdrew from the United States Wrestling Association (USWA), but the promotion ceased operations three months later.
The NWA Detroit United States Heavyweight Championship was a version of the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship contested in Big Time Wrestling from 1959 until 1980. It was originally known as the Chicago version and contested in Fred Kohler Enterprises. While the National Wrestling Alliance recognized only one World Heavyweight Champion, there were a number of different versions of the United States Championship recognized in various NWA territories across the country. Most NWA promotions had some version of an "American" or "United States" titles and, like these other titles, the Detroit version was the primary singles championship within the NWA Detroit promotion. Although the name of the title implies that it was defended throughout North, Central and South America, it was rarely defended outside of Southern California. As a result, the title was essentially a regional title rather than a national one. A number of NWA affiliated promoters at various points over the years have used their own regional versions or variations of "national" championships for the purpose of giving crowds the idea that the company was larger than it actually was, or that the company was the biggest or most successful within the ranks of the National Wrestling Alliance.
