The Nautical Museum of Crete is a museum in Chania, Crete, Greece. Its collection includes models of ships, nautical instruments, painting, historical photographs and war relics. The material is classified chronologically, starting from the Bronze Age up to our times. [1]

Main Collection

The main collection is located at the entrance to the Firka Fortress, on the West side of Chania harbour.

The exhibits of the first floor include models of ancient ships, a model of the fortified town and port under Venetian rule, a model that shows shipbuilding and repair buildings, with a rowing ship inside.

The second floor exhibits include models of modern Hellenic Navy ships, destroyers, a missile boat, a landing ship with trucks and APVs on board. The exhibits include the full bridge of a destroyer and two torpedo propulsion units. A section of the museum is dedicated to the German invasion of Crete.

Ancient Naval Architecture Collection and Minoan Ship Replica

In the Moro Shipyard at the eastern end of the harbour is a smaller exhibition of ancient naval architecture. This is dominated by a 17m experimental replica Minoan ship constructed between 2001 and 2004 (and eventually sailed and rowed to Piraeus) [1]

Kydonia or Cydonia was an ancient city-state on the northwest coast of the island of Crete. It is at the site of the modern-day Greek city of Chania. In legend Cydonia was founded by King Cydon (Κύδων), a son of Hermes or Apollo and of Akakallis, the daughter of King Minos. According to Pausanias he was son of king Tegeates.

Souda Bay is a bay and natural harbour near the town of Souda on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete. The bay is about 15 km long and only two to four km wide, and a deep natural harbour. It is formed between the Akrotiri peninsula and Cape Drapano, and runs west to east. The bay is overlooked on both sides by hills, with a relatively low and narrow isthmus in the west near Chania.

Gavalochori is a village of the Chania regional unit on the northwest coast of the island of Crete, in Greece. It is located on Cape Drapan in the Vamos municipality of the Apokoronas region. It is named after the Gavalas family who lived here during the reign of the Venetians. Gavalochori is four kilometers from the coast at Almirida. It is a very old village with an interesting history explained in the local Folklore Museum. The population is around 350 but this number swells in the summer months as tourists, relatives and visitors arrive. The village has many shops including two taverns, two cafes, a pastry shop with cafe bar, the village pre-school, a graphic design Studio, bakery, three grocery stores and a handicrafts shop. There are 14 Greek Orthodox churches in and around the village as well as Venetian arches and wells, Roman tombs and an ancient olive oil factory. Many interesting walks exist around the village.

Loutro lies on the south coast of Chania regional unit in west Crete, between Chora Sfakion and Agia Roumeli, the exit to the Samaria Gorge. The whole area is known as Sfakia. The village got its name from the Greek word for "bath," for the many ancient baths found in the area.

The Athens War Museum, established on July 18, 1975, is the museum of the Greek Armed Forces. Its purpose is the exhibition of weapon artifacts and the relevant research in the history of war. It covers the history of war in all ages. The Archaeological Museum of Chania is a museum located in the former Venetian Monastery of Saint Francis at 28 Chalidon Street, Chania, Crete, Greece. It was established in 1962.

War Museum of Chania is a museum in Chania, Crete, Greece, annex of the War Museum of Athens. It was founded on July 1995. The museum exhibits photographs, war artifacts and other items from the national wars and revolutions of the Greek History. It is housed in a building, built in 1870 and designed by the Italian architect Makouzo, which in the past has been used as barracks by the Italian Army during World War II. On 7 Oct 2015 it was closed up and appears to have been in this state for some time. There are no notices to say if the exhibitions have been moved elsewhere. On 22 July 2018, at 21:30 in the evening a fire broke out inside under unclear conditions. The building was completely destroyed, with no exhibits in place after being moved after an earthquake that had caused static problems in the building.

Museum of Typography

The Museum of Typography is a Greek museum of typography and printing located near Chania, Crete, at the Industrial Park of Souda. It was founded by Yannis Garedakis, owner and founder of the local newspaper Haniotika Nea, and his wife Eleni Garedakis. The museum started as a small private collection next to the newspaper’s printing facilities and first opened its doors to the public in 2005.
