Nemachilichthys ruppelli, also known as the mongoose loach is a species of fish in the genus Nemachilichthys. This fish is endemic to the Western Ghats of India. Recent evidence shows that there is only a marginal raw mitochondrial genetic distance between Nemachilichthys shimogensis and N. ruppelli. [2] Although morphometric difference occur at the population level, Keskar et al. conclude that there are no significant differences separating the two species. [2] Therefore they treat N. shimogensis as a synonym of N. ruppelli. The Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes follows this treatment. [4]

Contents

Nevertheless, Nemachilichthys shimogensis is listed as a separate species by the IUCN and Fishbase to this day. [1] [5] [6]

Distribution

N. ruppelli is presently reported from the Krishna river system in the Western Ghats, India. Specimen where found in the following rivers: Thunga, Mula-Mutha, Krishna river, Indrayani, Hiranyakeshi, Nira river and Koyna. [2]

Habitat

N. ruppelli lives in moderate to fast-flowing rivers, usually on the bed. N. ruppelli prefers mud, small rocks, silt and pebbles. It frequently occurs in association with submerged roots of riparian plants and aquatic vegetation. [2]

The largest reaches a length of 66 cm (26 in), though most species only reach half that size or less. They are found in tropical and subtropical oceans, mainly in shallow waters and estuaries, though some species are found in deep sea floors, and even a few in rivers.

Hemibagrus punctatus, or Nilgiri mystus, is a species of fish in the family Bagridae. It was first described by Jerdon in 1849. It is endemic to east-flowing rivers in the Western Ghats of India. Of these, the species is likely only found in the Kaveri River; records from the Krishna River may actually be of H. maydelli. However, one record from the west-flowing Bharatappuzha River has been tentatively assigned to this species. The last record of this species was in 1998, and it may have experienced a population decline of nearly 100%; thus, IUCN categorizes the species as critically endangered. It is threatened by habitat degradation by excess siltation, excess fishing, and dam construction. However, based on several specimens caught by fishermen between 2011-2012 that likely belong to this species, as well as testimonies from local fishers, moderate populations of this species may still be extant in the region.
