The Netherlands is set to take part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in Madrid, Spain, with "Music" performed by Stay Tuned. The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS organised the national final Junior Songfestival 2024 in order to select the Dutch entry for the contest.

Background

Prior to the 2024 contest, the Netherlands had participated in the contest twenty-one times since its first entry in the inaugural 2003 contest. Since then, the country has won the contest on one occasion in 2009 with the song "Click Clack" performed by Ralf Mackenbach. The Netherlands is the only country to have taken part in every edition of the contest. [1] Since 2014, as the result of a merger between the AVRO  –which had previously been in charge of the Netherlands' participation in the contest –and TROS into the current AVROTROS, it is the latter who participates representing the Netherlands. [2] [3] In 2023, Sep & Jasmijn  [ nl ] competed for the Netherlands with the song "Holding On to You", which ended up in 7th place out of 16 entries with 122 points. [4]

Before Junior Eurovision

Junior Songfestival2024

Junior Songfestival2024 was the twenty-first edition of Junior Songfestival , the national final format developed by AVROTROS to select Dutch entries for the Junior Eurovision Song Contest. The event was held on 21 September 2024 at the RTM Stage in Rotterdam, [5] and was hosted by Matheu and Stefania. The show was broadcast on NPO Zapp via NPO 3, as well as on the broadcaster's streaming platform NPO Start. [6] [7]

Format

The selection took place in four stages: the received applications were first assessed by an expert committee; 45 were selected to be performed at an audition round, exerpts of which were published to the competition's official YouTube channel on 5 and 19 April, and 3 May 2024, [8] [9] [10] where a jury selected twenty artists to advance to the academy; at the academy, the singers had the opportunity to work with vocal coaches and choreographers, [11] after which the nine finalists were determined, who were later grouped into four acts, each of them having an original song written and assigned; [12] at the final, which was held on 21 September 2024, the winner was determined by a combination of votes from an kids jury (traditionally made up of past Junior Songfestival participants), a professional jury (made up of industry professionals) and an online vote –each awarding sets of 8–10 and 12 points –with the latter taking precedence in the event of a tie. [13]

Competing entries

The submission process for interested artists aged between nine and fourteen was open between 23 September 2023 and 31 January 2024. [14] All submissions required participants to enter one cover song and a separate introduction video. [15] An expert committee reviewed the received submissions and selected 45 of them (including 29 which qualified directly, announced on 12 February 2024, and 16 which advanced from the preselection –a second chance round, where an additional 48 artists who hadn't advanced were invited to perform, after which some were invited for the audition, announced on 27 February 2024) to proceed to the audition round. [16] [17] [18] Auditionee and eventual finalist Veronika had previously competed in the Ukrainian national final in 2021, placing third. [19] The finalists were revealed on 31 May 2024, [20] while the groupings were unveiled on 14 June. Final

The final took place on 21 September 2024. The kids jury panel consisted of Junior Songfestival2023 participants Joy! and Sep & Jasmijn  [ nl ], while the professional jury panel, the members of whom provided feedback in regards to the performances during the show, consisted of singers Anne Appelo  [ nl ], Jim Bakkum and Roxeanne Hazes  [ nl ]. [13] [25] In addition to the competing entries, the finalists performed a rendition of the common song, "Move On". [26] Stay Tuned –a group consisting of fourteen-year-old Chiara, twelve-year-olds Inkar and Miucha, and thirteen-year-old Niek –were declared the winners with the song "Music". [27] [28]

The song was performed by Douwe Bob, who was internally selected by the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS to represent the Netherlands at the 2016 contest in Stockholm, Sweden. Douwe Bob's appointment as the Dutch representative was announced on 22 September 2015, while the song, "Slow Down", was presented to the public on 4 March 2016.

The Netherlands participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "Lights and Shadows" written by Rory de Kievit and Rick Vol. The song is performed by the group O'G3NE, who was internally selected by the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS to represent the Netherlands at the 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. Junior Songfestival is a Dutch televised music competition for children, held annually since 2003. It is the children's version of the Nationaal Songfestival. The winner of the contest goes on to represent the Netherlands in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, an international version of the competition.

The AI Song Contest is an international music competition for songs that have been composed using artificial intelligence (AI). The inaugural edition took place on 12 May 2020 and was organised by the Dutch public broadcaster VPRO, in collaboration with NPO 3FM and NPO Innovation. Since 2021, the contest has been held by Stichting AISC, as part of an annual conference organised by Wallifornia MusicTech until 2022, and in 2023 with the support of RTVE Play.

The Netherlands participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 which was held on 29 November 2020 in Warsaw, Poland. The girl group Unity was selected by AVROTROS to represent the country through the televised national selection Junior Songfestival 2020. They achieved 4th place with 132 points.

The Netherlands participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song "Birth of a New Age" written by Jeangu Macrooy and Pieter Perquin. The song was performed by Jeangu Macrooy, who was internally selected to represent the Netherlands at the 2021 contest after he was due to compete in the 2020 contest with "Grow" before the event's cancellation. In addition to its participation, the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS also hosted the contest in Rotterdam, after winning the competition in 2019 with the song "Arcade" by Duncan Laurence. The Netherlands participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Paris, France. National broadcaster AVROTROS selected Ayana to represent the Netherlands through the national final Junior Songfestival 2021. "Birth of a New Age" is a song by Surinamese singer-songwriter Jeangu Macrooy. The song represented the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The music video was recorded in the Rijksmuseum. In the song, Macrooy calls for resilience and authenticity. The song is mostly written in English and partly in Sranan Tongo, a lingua franca in Suriname.

The Netherlands participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy, with "De diepte" performed by S10. The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS internally selected the Dutch entry for the 2022 contest. S10's appointment as the Dutch representative was announced on 7 December 2021, while the song, "De diepte", was presented to the public during an event on 3 March 2022.

The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS internally selected the Dutch entry for the 2024 contest. Klein's appointment as the Dutch representative was announced on 11 December 2023, while the song, "Europapa", was presented to the public on 29 February 2024.

The Netherlands competed in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in France, which was held in Nice on 26 November 2023. Sep and Jasmijn were selected by AVROTROS to represent the country with their song "Holding On to You" through the televised national selection Junior Songfestival 2023.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Regio Songfestival</span> Dutch song competition

The Regio Songfestival is a Dutch song competition between regional public broadcasters. Held in its current form since 2023, the format of the competition is loosely based on the Eurovision Song Contest and was first used in 1995 under its original title Het Nederlandse Songfestival. Every edition features thirteen original songs that are performed in a live broadcast, each representing a region of the Netherlands. From the competing entries, a winner is determined through a combination of televoting and votes cast by regional juries.
