The New Communist Party of Aotearoa (NCPA) is a communist political party in New Zealand founded in 2019. [2] Although placing itself firmly in the tradition of the now defunct Communist Party of New Zealand (CPNZ), the NCPA does not have a direct organizational or personal link with the CPNZ.

Ideology

The NCPA describes itself as a revolutionary Marxist-Leninist organisation firmly rooted in working class. In its political program it supports the transition from a capitalist economy to a dictatorship of the proletariat in which workers own the means of production. The NCPA demands stricter protections of LGBT people against homophobia and transphobia and women's rights, including the complete closure of the wage gap between men and women. [3]

In international relations it supports a policy of nonalignment, rejecting New Zealand's membership as a NATO Global Partner and the Five Eyes. The NCPA supports the governments of China, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos and North Korea against what it characterizes as "US/NATO imperialist aggression." [4]

Activities

The party attends events organized by the Cuban Embassy in New Zealand, for instance to celebrate National Rebellion Day. [5] It has fraternal relations with the Communist Party of Australia, with representatives of both parties visiting each other's congresses and issuing joint statements. [6] [7]

Foreign relations of Cuba

Cuba's foreign policy has been fluid throughout history depending on world events and other variables, including relations with the United States. Without massive Soviet subsidies and its primary trading partner, Cuba became increasingly isolated in the late 1980s and early 1990s after the fall of the USSR and the end of the Cold War, but Cuba opened up more with the rest of the world again starting in the late 1990s when they have since entered bilateral co-operation with several South American countries, most notably Venezuela and Bolivia beginning in the late 1990s, especially after the Venezuela election of Hugo Chávez in 1999, who became a staunch ally of Castro's Cuba. The United States used to stick to a policy of isolating Cuba until December 2014, when Barack Obama announced a new policy of diplomatic and economic engagement. The European Union accuses Cuba of "continuing flagrant violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms". Cuba has developed a growing relationship with the People's Republic of China and Russia. In all, Cuba continues to have formal relations with 160 nations, and provided civilian assistance workers – principally medical – in more than 20 nations. More than one million exiles have escaped to foreign countries. Cuba's present foreign minister is Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.

Communist Party of New Zealand

The Communist Party of New Zealand (CPNZ) was a Communist political party in New Zealand which existed from March 1921 until the early 1990s. Although spurred to life by events in Soviet Russia in the aftermath of World War I, the party had roots in pre-existing revolutionary socialist and syndicalist organisations, including in particular the independent Wellington Socialist Party, supporters of the Industrial Workers of the World in the Auckland region, and a network of impossiblist study groups of miners on the west coast of the South Island.

Socialism in New Zealand

The extent to which socialism plays a part in modern New Zealand politics depends on which definitions of socialist are used, but few mainstream politicians would describe themselves using the word "socialist". The term "social-democrat" is more common, but the more general "left-wing" or "centre-left" are used far more frequently. New Zealand has a complicated assortment of socialist causes and organisations. Some of these play a considerable role in public activism—some commentators claim that New Zealand socialists are more prominent in causes such as the anti-war movement than in promoting socialism itself. Other groups are strongly committed to radical socialist revolution.
