New York State Route 237 (NY 237) is a northsouth state highway located in the western part of New York in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 5 in Stafford. Its northern terminus is at an interchange with the Lake Ontario State Parkway immediately south of Lake Ontario in Kendall. NY 237 passes through mostly rural areas of Genesee and Orleans counties; however, it also passes through several small communities, including the village of Holley.

In the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York, NY 237 was assigned to the portion of its modern alignment south of what is now NY 104 in Murray while the segment of modern NY 237 between current NY 104 and NY 18 was designated as New York State Route 385. NY 237 was extended northward to Kendall c.1932, replacing NY 385. It was extended northward once more in the early 1970s to meet the Lake Ontario State Parkway.

NY 237 begins at an intersection with NY 5 east of Batavia in the Genesee County town of Stafford. It heads northward from the hamlet of Stafford as Morganville Road, traversing open fields on its way to the hamlet of Morganville 1 mile (1.6 km) to the north. Here, the route takes on a northeast alignment for a brief distance before resuming a northerly alignment as it exits the community. North of Morganville, NY 237 crosses open terrain and passes over the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) ahead of an isolated junction with NY 33—which parallels the Thruway along this stretch—near the northern town line. The route continues north into the town of Byron and the hamlet of South Byron, a small community built up around the CSX Transportation-owned Rochester Subdivision. NY 237 quickly proceeds through South Byron, passing under the railroad line on its way toward the hamlet of Byron. [3]

In the center of Byron, NY 237 meets NY 262, which becomes county-maintained as the eastern segment of County Route 13 (CR 13) east of NY 237. Past NY 262, NY 237 proceeds through the residential northern outskirts of the hamlet to Pumpkin Hill, the last community that NY 237 enters prior to crossing into Orleans County. Outside of Pumpkin Hill, the route passes through sparsely developed areas of Byron and Clarendon, serving the small hamlet of Honest Hill in the southern portion of the latter. NY 237 continues north to the hamlet of Clarendon, situated at the junction of NY 237 and NY 31A. At this point, NY 237 turns to follow a more northeasterly alignment toward the village of Holley, the largest community on NY 237. After another 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of rural surroundings, the route enters the Holley village limits in the town of Murray, becoming South Main Street and turning back to the north upon passing under the Falls Road Railroad south of the village center. The highway continues north along South Main Street for three blocks to the center of Holley, where it intersects NY 31 northwest of the village's business district. NY 237 continues on as North Main Street, passing by the Holley Central School District's elementary and high schools and crossing over the Erie Canal before exiting the mostly residential village. Now named North Main Street Road, NY 237 continues generally northward through rural portions of Murray to a junction with NY 104 (Ridge Road). NY 237 turns west here, following NY 104 for just under 1 mile (1.6 km) to the hamlet of Murray, where NY 237 breaks from NY 104 and continues north into the town of Kendall as Kendall Road. [3]

In Kendall, NY 237 heads north across mostly undeveloped areas to the vicinity of the town center, where it enters a more residential area as it meets NY 18 south of the hamlet of Kendall. NY 237 proceeds northward into Kendall itself, passing Kendall Elementary School and serving the community's center before continuing into another rural area of the town of Kendall. The route traverses another 2 miles (3.2 km) of open fields toward the Lake Ontario shoreline, where NY 237 comes to an end at an interchange with the Lake Ontario State Parkway. Although NY 237 terminates here, Kendall Road continues northward for another 300 yards (274 m) to serve a pair of lakeside communities. [3]

History

NY 237 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York to the portion of its current alignment south of then-NY 31 (now NY 104). [2] At the same time, the portion of modern NY 237 between NY 104 and NY 18 was designated as NY 385. [4] The NY 385 designation was short-lived, however, as it became part of an extended NY 237 c.1932. [5] [6] The route was extended again in the early 1970s to meet the Lake Ontario State Parkway at an interchange on the shoreline of Lake Ontario. [7] [8] This extension of NY 237 is maintained by Orleans County as CR 57A from NY 18 to Carr Road and as CR 70 north of Carr Road. Both county route designations are unsigned. While NY 237 ends at the parkway, CR 70 continues northward for an additional 0.25 miles (0.40 km) to a dead end at Lake Ontario. [9]

The portion of NY 104 between Rochester and the village of Webster east of the city is a limited-access highway known as the Keeler Street Expressway west of NY 590 and the Irondequoit–Wayne County Expressway east of NY 590; from Williamson to Oswego, NY 104 is a super two highway.

New York State Route 18 (NY 18) is an east–west state highway in western New York in the United States. It runs parallel to the south shore of Lake Ontario for most of its length between Niagara County and Monroe County. NY 18, which also passes through Orleans County, acts as a northerly alternate to NY 104, another east–west route that parallels NY 18 to the south on Ridge Road. The western terminus of NY 18 is at a complex grade-separated interchange with NY 104 outside the village of Lewiston. Its eastern terminus is at a junction with NY 104 in an area of Rochester known as Kodak Park.

New York State Route 18F (NY 18F) is a 9.80-mile (15.77 km) long state highway in northwestern Niagara County, New York, in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an interchange with NY 104 and the Niagara Scenic Parkway just east of the village of Lewiston. The northern terminus is at an intersection with NY 18 near Four Mile Creek State Park in Porter. NY 18F parallels NY 18 for most of its alignment, taking a more westerly course than its parent. NY 18F is the only remaining suffixed route of NY 18.

New York State Route 82 (NY 82) is a state highway in the eastern Hudson Valley of New York in the United States. It begins at an junction with NY 52 northeast of the village of Fishkill, bends eastward towards Millbrook, and then returns westward to end at a junction with U.S. Route 9, NY 9H, and NY 23 at Bell Pond, near Claverack. New York State Route 39 (NY 39) is an east–west state highway in the western portion of New York in the United States. It begins and ends at intersections with U.S. Route 20 (US 20) 98.89 miles (159.15 km) apart. The western terminus of NY 39 is east of Fredonia in the Chautauqua County town of Sheridan, while the eastern terminus is in the Livingston County village of Avon. At its east end, NY 39 also ends at NY 5, which is concurrent to US 20 at this point. NY 39 serves several villages, including Gowanda and Geneseo, and intersects a handful of major north–south highways, such as US 219 in Springville and NY 19 near Pike. New York State Route 98 (NY 98) is a state highway in the western part of New York in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with U.S. Route 219 (US 219) in the town of Great Valley in Cattaraugus County. The northern end is at an interchange with the Lake Ontario State Parkway in the town of Carlton in Orleans County, near the southern shore of Lake Ontario. In between, NY 98 serves the city of Batavia, connects to the New York State Thruway, and passes by the Attica Correctional Facility. Most of the route passes through rural, undeveloped areas; however, in southern Genesee County, it traverses more urbanized areas that lie in and around Batavia.

New York State Route 262 (NY 262) is an east–west state highway in Genesee County, New York, in the United States. It extends for 17.03 miles (27.41 km) across mostly rural areas dominated by cultivated fields, connecting NY 63 in the village of Oakfield to NY 19 in the village of Bergen. In between, the two-lane NY 262 serves the village of Elba and the hamlet of Byron, where it meets NY 98 and NY 237. NY 262 is situated several miles north of the New York State Thruway and follows a routing parallel to that of the Thruway. The route was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York to a more northerly routing between Elba and Byron, but gradually moved onto its current Oakfield–Bergen alignment through a series of changes in the following decades.

New York State Route 279 (NY 279) is a north–south state highway in Orleans County, New York, in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 98 north of the village of Albion in the town of Gaines. Its northern terminus is at a junction with NY 18 in Carlton near where NY 18 meets the western end of the Lake Ontario State Parkway. The entirety of NY 279 north of NY 104 is maintained by Orleans County; south of NY 104, the route is maintained by the New York State Department of Transportation. NY 279 is a rural connector highway that serves only one community, the hamlet of Waterport on the banks of Oak Orchard Creek in Carlton.

New York State Route 272 (NY 272) is a north–south state highway in the western portion of New York in the United States. It extends for just over 7.5 miles (12.1 km) along the Orleans–Monroe county line from an intersection with NY 104 in Clarkson to the Lake Ontario shoreline just north of an interchange with the Lake Ontario State Parkway in the Hamlin hamlet of Troutburg. The route is two lanes wide for its entire length and passes through mostly rural areas, save for the hamlet of Morton at a junction with Kenmore and Morton Roads. NY 272 was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York and has not been altered since.

New York State Route 38 (NY 38) is a north–south state highway in the Finger Lakes region of New York in the United States. Its southern terminus is at an intersection with NY 96 in the town of Owego in Tioga County. The northern terminus is at a junction with NY 104A in the town of Sterling in Cayuga County. NY 38 is a two-lane local road for most of its length. The route is the main access road to parts of Auburn, Dryden, Newark Valley and Port Byron. It passes through mountainous terrain in Tioga and Cortland counties, but the terrain levels out as it heads through the Finger Lakes area and Cayuga County.

New York State Route 260 (NY 260) is a north–south state highway in Monroe County, New York, in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 31 in the town of Sweden. Its northern terminus is at a junction with the Lake Ontario State Parkway in the town of Hamlin near the Lake Ontario shoreline. NY 260 crosses the Erie Canal near Brockport and intersects NY 104 and NY 18 in Clarkson. Much of NY 260 is a two-lane highway that passes through rural portions of western Monroe County.

New York State Route 261 (NY 261) is a north–south state highway located west of the city of Rochester in Monroe County, New York, in the United States. It extends for 7.70 miles (12.39 km) through mostly rural areas from an intersection with NY 104 on the Greece–Parma town line to a dead end at the Lake Ontario shoreline in Greece. The majority of NY 261 is situated on the boundary between the towns of Greece and Parma; however, the last 2 miles (3.2 km) of the route are located solely in Greece. NY 261 meets the Lake Ontario State Parkway southwest of Manitou Beach on the latter stretch.

New York State Route 259 (NY 259) is a north–south state highway located west of Rochester in Monroe County, New York, in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 33A in the hamlet of West Chili within the town of Chili. Its northern terminus is at a junction with the Lake Ontario State Parkway in Parma near the Lake Ontario shoreline. NY 259 meets Interstate 490 (I-490) in Chili and NY 531 south of Spencerport. The junction with I-490 is less than 0.2 miles (0.3 km) from where NY 259 begins at NY 33A.

New York State Route 350 (NY 350) is a north–south state highway in western Wayne County, New York, in the United States. It extends for 11.40 miles (18.35 km) from an intersection with NY 31 and NY 31F in the village of Macedon to a junction with NY 104 in the town of Ontario. NY 350 serves as the eastern terminus for three routes: the aforementioned NY 31F, NY 286, and NY 441, all of which originate in the Rochester area. Aside from the village of Macedon at its south end and the hamlet of Ontario Center at its north terminus, NY 350 serves mostly rural areas dominated by farmland. NY 350 was assigned c. 1932 to the portion of its routing south of Cator Corners, the north junction with NY 31F. It was extended northward to its current terminus in the 1940s.

New York State Route 414 (NY 414) is a north–south state highway in the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions of New York in the United States. It extends for 83.20 miles (133.90 km) from an intersection with NY 352 in the Steuben County city of Corning to a junction with NY 104 in the Wayne County town of Huron. NY 414 spans five counties and roughly parallels NY 14 between Watkins Glen and Huron. It intersects every major east–west arterial in western New York, including the Southern Tier Expressway, U.S. Route 20 (US 20) and NY 5, and the New York State Thruway (I-90). The route passes through mostly rural areas as it travels between the several villages and cities along its routing.

New York State Route 89 (NY 89) is a north–south state highway in central New York in the United States. It extends for 62.35 miles (100.34 km) from an intersection with NY 13, NY 34, and NY 96 in the Tompkins County city of Ithaca to an interchange with NY 104 in the Wayne County town of Wolcott. The route spans a total of three counties, connecting the heart of the Finger Lakes Region to a point 6 miles (10 km) south of Lake Ontario. Along the way, NY 89 intersects two regionally important highways: the conjoined routes of U.S. Route 20 (US 20) and NY 5 in Seneca Falls and NY 31 in Savannah. NY 89 runs along the western edge of Cayuga Lake from Ithaca to Seneca Falls.

New York State Route 104B (NY 104B) is a 6.07-mile (9.77 km) east–west state highway located in central Oswego County, New York, in the United States. This highway provides a connection between NY 104, the principal highway along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, in New Haven and NY 3, the principal highway along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, in the town of Mexico. It passes through mostly rural areas and acts as a two-lane bypass of the village of Mexico, located where NY 3 and NY 104 intersect southeast of NY 104B. All of NY 104B is part of the Seaway Trail, a National Scenic Byway. The route was originally New York State Route 3D in 1930. NY 3D was redesignated as New York State Route 3E c. 1932, and was redesignated NY 104B in April 1935.

Lake Road (Western New York)

Lake Road is an east–west roadway in western New York in the United States. It extends for 29 miles (47 km) from the Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge in the Monroe County town of Webster to New York State Route 14 (NY 14) in the Wayne County village of Sodus Point. As its name implies, it follows the southern shore of Lake Ontario for its entire length. Lake Road serves as the northern terminus of NY 250 and was once the northern terminus of NY 21. The entirety of the roadway east of Bay Road in Webster is part of the Seaway Trail, a National Scenic Byway.
