The Northern Line is a commuter rail line operated by İZBAN using tracks owned by the Turkish State Railways. The line runs from north from Alsancak Terminal in İzmir to the town of Aliağa.

Train service on the line was inaugurated on 5 December 2010 between Alsancak and Çiğli. Service was extended further north to Aliağa on 30 January 2011.

Overview

Between Cumaovası and Menemen, a total of 86 trains operate in each direction daily (42 continuing on to Aliağa, 42 continuing to Tepeköy). The first train leaves Alsancak at 05:57, and the last train leaves at 01:00.

Passengers may transfer to the İzmir Metro at Halkapınar, and connections are available to the State Railway's regional and main line trains at Çiğli and Menemen.

The Basmane-Aliağa Regional was a regional rail service from Basmane Terminal in İzmir to the port town of Aliağa in Turkey. The service started in 1996, when the State Railways completed the branch line from Menemen to Aliağa. Trains stopped at all local stops in northern İzmir. The service was the predecessor of the new İZBAN Line. The service was discontinued in July 2006.

The station was closed in 2006 and moved underground as part of the Karşıyaka tunnel. Alaybey was reopened on December 5, 2010.

Tepeköy railway station is a railway station in Torbalı and is the southern terminus for Aliağa and Menemen outbound trains of the İZBAN. The station was originally opened on 14 November 1861 by the Oriental Railway Company. Between 2015 and 2016, Tepeköy was rebuilt and expanded from a one track station to three tracks to service commuter trains (İZBAN).

The Aegean Express, numbered as B31, is a passenger train operating daily between Basmane railway station in İzmir to Eskişehir. The train operates as a local service on the route, calling at more stations than its counterpart, the Karesi Express; which also operates between İzmir and Balıkesir.
