Ocean Grove are an Australian nu metal band formed in 2010. Their initial line-up was Jimmy Hall on guitar, Luke Holmes on lead vocals, Mathias Morales on drums and vocals, Dale Tanner on vocals and bass guitar, and Running Touch on guitar. In 2013 Morales was replaced on drums by Sam Bassal and in the following year Matthew Henley joined on guitar as Touch became a studio-only member. They have released three extended plays and one full-length album, The Rhapsody Tapes (3 February 2017), which reached No. 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart in its first week. It was selected as a "Feature Album" by Australian radio station Triple J. The band refers to their music style as "odd world music".

Nu metal is a subgenre of alternative metal that combines elements of heavy metal music with elements of other music genres such as hip hop, alternative rock, funk, industrial, and grunge. Nu metal bands have drawn elements and influences from a variety of musical styles, including multiple genres of heavy metal. Nu metal rarely features guitar solos; the genre is heavily syncopated and based on guitar riffs. Many nu metal guitarists use seven-string guitars that are down-tuned to play a heavier sound. DJs are occasionally featured in nu metal to provide instrumentation such as sampling, turntable scratching and electronic backgrounds. Vocal styles in nu metal include singing, rapping, screaming and growling. Nu metal is one of the key genres of the new wave of American heavy metal.

Matthew Kopp, known professionally as Running Touch, is an Australian Singer, Songwriter and record producer. His first single, "What's Best For You", was released in 2015. Running Touch is best known for featuring on the single "Better Together ". The track reached No. 63 on the Australian Singles ARIA Charts Running Touch has performed at festivals including: Splendour in the Grass, Groovin The Moo, Beyond The Valley and Listen Out (festival) Kopp plays guitar for the Australian band Ocean Grove.

<i>The Rhapsody Tapes</i> 2017 studio album by Ocean Grove

The Rhapsody Tapes is the debut studio album by Australian nu metal band Ocean Grove. it was released on February 3, 2017 through UNFD Records. Their first single "These Boys Light Fires" was released on December 1, 2016. followed by another single "Intimate Alien" which was released on December 21, 2016 along with the music video for the single and the pre-order for the album. The album reached #5 on the ARIA Albums Chart in its first week of release, and was selected as a "Feature Album" by Australian radio station Triple J almost two weeks ahead of the album's release.

History

Formation (2010–2016)

Ocean Grove were formed in 2010 in Melbourne originally as a post-hardcore band by Luke Holmes (lead vocals), Dale Tanner (vocals/bass), Running Touch , Jimmy Hall (guitar) and Matias Morales (drums/vocals). This line-up released a demo in 2010, followed by their debut extended play, Outsider in 2013, before Morales' departed the band later that year and was replaced by Sam Bassal. A single was released in late 2013 called "The Dead Years". In 2014 Running Touch stopped touring with the band to focus on his solo project, while remaining as a studio member and Matt Henley was brought in as an additional guitarist. On 12 June 2015 the band released their second EP, Black Label , which peaked at No. 50 on the ARIA Albums Chart. [1] It was followed by the Black Label Tour around Australia in July 2015 with support from Devastator and Void of Vision. [2] The band was a supporting act, alongside Like Moths to Flames, Buried in Verona and August Burns Red for Northlane's headlining Australian tour in November 2015. [3] In 2016, Ocean Grove supported both In Hearts Wake and Northlane on their "Equinox" dual-headlining tour.

Black Label is the second EP by Australian nu metal band Ocean Grove released independently on June 12, 2015. It was later re-released through UNFD under the revised title Black Label on April 27, 2016 with the additional track "Lights On Kind Of Lover".

ARIA Charts main Australian music sales charts

The ARIA Charts are the main Australian music sales charts, issued weekly by the Australian Recording Industry Association. The charts are a record of the highest selling songs and albums in various genres in Australia. ARIA became the official Australian music chart in June 1988, succeeding the Kent Music Report which had been Australia's national charts since 1974.

DVSR

DVSR are an Australian rap metal band from South-western Sydney, New South Wales. They were formed in November 2013, and released their debut studio album D.V.S.R. in November 2015.

Signing to UNFD and The Rhapsody Tapes (2016–2018)

On 27 April 2016 the band had signed with UNFD and released a new single, "Lights on Kind of Lover". [4] They also re-released their Black Label EP in the United States and Europe under the revised title, Black Label (Sublime Vol.), with "Lights on Kind of Lover" included as a bonus final track on the EP. [5]

UNFD

UNFD is an independent record label based in Melbourne, Australia. The label is home to a number of Australian artists including Northlane, Ocean Grove, Hellions and In Hearts Wake, and international artists Frank Iero, Architects, Beartooth and more. The label is widely known as Australia's leading heavy music brand with a focus on developing heavy music around the world with offices in London and Los Angeles.

On 1 December 2016 Ocean Grove dropped a new single, "These Boys Light Fires". [6] On 21 December they released another single, "Intimate Alien", along with its music video and announced that they would release their debut album, The Rhapsody Tapes , on 3 February 2017. [7] Upon its release The Rhapsody Tapes reached No. 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart in its first week, [1] [8] [9] and was selected as a "Feature Album" by Australian radio station, Triple J. [10]

Triple J Australian radio station

Triple J is a government-funded, national Australian radio station intended to appeal to listeners of alternative music, which began broadcasting in January 1975. The station also places a greater emphasis on broadcasting Australian content compared to commercial stations. triple j is a division of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

On 24 May 2017 Ocean Grove announced their national headlining tour, which spanned from 4 to 12 August with support from Justice for the Damned, Broken, and the Beverly Chills. [11] The band then supported All That Remains and Falling in Reverse for their co-headlining Coming Home to Madness Tour in the US from 25 September to 6 October 2017, followed by a run of shows alongside Northlane, Erra and Invent Animate in Europe and the United Kingdom, which went from 23 November to 16 December of that year.

All That Remains (band) American heavy metal band

All That Remains is an American heavy metal band from Springfield, Massachusetts, formed in 1998. They have released nine studio albums, a live CD and DVD, and have sold over a million records worldwide. The group currently consists of vocalist Philip Labonte, rhythm guitarist Mike Martin, former Diecast drummer Jason Costa, bassist Aaron Patrick, and lead guitarist Jason Richardson, with Labonte being the last remaining original member. In spite of this, the band's line-up had remained consistent from the release of 2008's Overcome until 2015's The Order of Things, spanning four albums. This line-up changed, however, in September 2015, when long-time bassist Jeanne Sagan left the band, with Patrick taking her place.

Falling in Reverse is an American rock band based in Las Vegas, Nevada and formed in 2008, signed to Epitaph Records.

Northlane Australian band

Northlane is an Australian metalcore band from Sydney, formed in 2009. The band comprises guitarists Jon Deiley and Josh Smith, drummer Nic Pettersen, bassist Brendon Padjasek and vocalist Marcus Bridge. Northlane have released four studio albums: Discoveries ; Singularity, which reached No. 3 on the ARIA Albums Chart; Node, a number one album and Mesmer. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2015 the group won the Best Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Album category for their album Node. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2017, the band won again with Mesmer.

Ocean Grove were one of the bands that performed at the first ever Download Festival Australia at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse on 24 March 2018, [12] as well as playing shows that same week in Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide supporting Limp Bizkit and Of Mice & Men. [13]

Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is the world's richest handicap and the world's richest 3200 metre horse race. The racecourse is situated on low alluvial flats, next to the Maribyrnong River. The area was first used for horse racing in March 1840.

Signing to BMG, Upcoming Second Album and lineup changes (2018–present)

On 2 May 2018 Ocean Grove signed a worldwide publishing deal with BMG. [14] In an interview with Depth magazine, Dale Tanner revealed that the band was working on material for a new album, [15] then stating in a separate interview with Spotlight Report that a new single would come out later in the year with a new album possibly coming out in 2019. [16]

On 14 December 2018, Ocean Grove released a new single "Glass Gloss", and announced that vocalist Luke Holmes and guitarist Jimmy Hall would be leaving the band and will be performing with the band for the last time at the Unify Gathering on 11 January 2019, with the band continuing on as a four-piece. [17]

On 3 February 2019 the band released a teaser for their new member in the style of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater character selection menu. [18] On 4 February 2019 they premiered a new single, 'Ask for the Anthem' and announced the addition of Twiggy Hunter to the lineup on bass, with Dale Tanner moving to full-time frontman. [19]

Style

Ocean Grove's musical style is generally considered as nu metal, [20] [21] grunge, [20] [21] [22] nu metalcore [22] and hardcore punk. [21] [22] The band themselves often describe their sound as "Odd World Music". [21] [23]

In Hearts Wake is an Australian metalcore band from Byron Bay, formed in 2006, currently consisting of vocalist Jake Taylor, bassist and singer Kyle Erich, lead guitarist Eaven Dall, drummer Conor Ward, and rhythm guitarist Ben Nairne. They have released three EPs, Into the Storm, The Gateway, and Ark Prevails, and four full-length studio albums, Divination, Earthwalker, Skydancer, and Ark. The band's lyrical themes include environmentalism, environmental justice, climate change, conservation, and other social issues.

Skydancer is the third album by Australian metalcore band In Hearts Wake. The album was released on 1 May 2015 through UNFD and it is the continuation of their second album Earthwalker. The album peaked at No. 2 at official ARIA Charts. It's the last album to feature Caleb Burton as a writer, with his departure following the release of Skydancer. Nic Pettersen of Northlane played drums on the album, with Caleb being unable to secure a US Visa in time to record the album; producer Josh Schroeder revealed on Reddit that he was originally going to track drums for both Earthwalker and Skydancer, going as far as writing the drum tracks for both records and practicing as a touring member for the upcoming shows close to his studio.

Caligulas Horse

Caligula's Horse is an Australian progressive metal band from Brisbane, Queensland. The band was formed by Sam Vallen and Jim Grey in early 2011. The current lineup consists of lead vocalist Jim Grey, lead guitarist Sam Vallen, guitarist Adrian Goleby, bassist and vocalist Dale Prinsse and drummer Josh Griffin. Hellions is an Australian punk rock band from Sydney, formed in 2013 after the break up of The Bride, in which drummer Anthony Caruso, bassist turned vocalist Dre Faivre and guitarist/vocalist Matt Gravolin continued under a different moniker. They have released four studio albums; their third, Opera Oblivia, was nominated for the 2016 ARIA Award for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album.
