A leadership election for the Czech Party of Free Citizens was held on 18 November 2017, [2] after the party's unsuccessful results in the legislative election and consequent resignation of the party's leadership. [3] The election was expected to be a two-way contest between Tomáš Pajonk and Jiří Payne, [4] but on 11 November 2017, former leader Petr Mach announced his candidacy. [5] The results were announced on 19 November 2017, with Pajonk defeating Mach by a large margin. [6]

Background

A legislative election was held on 20–21 October 2017. Svobodní's share of the vote fell to 1.5% from 2.6% in the 2013 election. The incumbent leader Petr Mach resigned afterwards, [7] and the election was scheduled for 12–18 November. Mach stated that he would consider standing again. Tomáš Pajonk and Jiří Payne were the first prominent candidates to announce their candidacy. [4] Pajonk was previously suggested by Mach. [8] The election was expected to be a two-way contest between Pajonk and Payne. [4] Mach eventually decided to run and announced his candidacy on 10 November 2017. [9] The other two candidates were Tomáš Michalička and Daniel Urban. [10]

Petr Mach is a Czech economist and former Member of the European Parliament. He is the founder of the Party of Free Citizens which he led until 2017 when he was replaced by Tomáš Pajonk.

Zlín Region is an administrative unit of the Czech Republic, located in the south-eastern part of the historical region of Moravia. It is named after its capital Zlín. Together with the Olomouc Region it forms a cohesion area of Central Moravia. It is located in the eastern part of the Czech Republic, where the borders with Slovakia are formed by its eastern edge. It borders the South Moravian Region in the southwest, the Olomouc Region in the northwest and the Moravian-Silesian Region in the north. Culturally, the region is composed of parts of three traditional Moravian regions: Hanakia, the Moravian Slovakia and the Moravian Wallachia, as the city of Zlín lies roughly at their tripoint.

Aftermath

The results were announced on 19 November 2017. Pajonk received over 50% of votes and became the new leader. [13]

January 2017 Party of Free Citizens leadership election

The Party of Free Citizens leadership election of 2017 was held on 22 January 2017. It was held after the incumbent leader Petr Mach resigned in December 2016. Mach was reelected when he received more than 60% of votes. Voter turnout was about 50%.

2012 Party of Free Citizens presidential primaries

Party of Free Citizens presidential primaries, 2012 were held for Czech presidential election, 2013 from 7 to 14 June 2002. Ladislav Jakl was the only candidate. His nomination was considered almost certain. Jakl's candidature was supported by Václav Klaus.

2015 Party of Free Citizens leadership election

The Party of Free Citizens leadership election of 2015 was held on 23 November 2015. The incumbent leader Petr Mach was reelected. 574 members of the party voted. Mach received 2 thirds of votes.

2018 Civic Democratic Party leadership election

The next Civic Democratic Party (ODS) leadership election will be held on 13 January 2018. The incumbent leader Petr Fiala seeks reelection. Shadow Minister of Education Václav Klaus Jr. was widely expected to run against Fiala. He is considered to be the most visible politician of the party. In December 2016, Czech bookmaker company Fortuna wrote a course for Klaus Jr. to replace Fiala on 20:1. Klaus Jr.. decided to not run against Fiala. Approximately 540 delegates were allowed to vote. Fiala received 451 votes and was elected for another term.

2018 Czech Social Democratic Party leadership election

A leadership election for the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) was held in 2018 following the 2017 legislative election. Jan Hamáček was elected the new leader of the party, defeating Jiří Zimola in the second round.

Czech political party TOP 09 held a leadership election on 26 November 2017, following the party's poor result in the 2017 Czech legislative election. Jiří Pospíšil was elected as the new leader.

2018 Trutnov by-election

A by-election for the Trutnov Senate seat in the Czech Republic was held over two rounds in January 2018. The first round was held on 5 and 6 January 2018, with the second round on 12 and 13 January. The front-runners in the election were Jan Sobotka, supported by right-wing parties, and Jiří Hlavatý, the candidate of ANO 2011. Both of these candidates qualified for the second round held on 12 and 13 January 2018, which was won by Sobotka with 67% of votes.

The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) held a leadership election on 21 April 2018. Snap election was held as a result of party's losses in 2017 legislative election. Josef Skála was first major candidate to announce his candidacy. The incumbent leader Vojtěch Filip decided to run for another term. MEP Kateřina Konečná became third major candidate. Filip and Skála eventually advanced to second round.

2018 Green Party (Czech Republic) leadership election

The Green Party (SZ) leadership election of 2018 was held on 20 January 2018. The incumbent leader Matěj Stropnický wasn't running for reelection. It will be held following 2017 legislative election in which party received only 1.46% of votes. Mayor of Prague 4 Petr Štěpánek was elected the new leader.

2018 Prague municipal election

Municipal elections were held in Prague in on 5 and 6 October 2018 as part of nationwide municipal elections. All 65 seats of the Prague Assembly were up to elect. Full results were presented a day later, on 7 October 2018.

Next Czech presidential election

Presidential elections will be held in the Czech Republic no later than January 2023. The incumbent president Miloš Zeman is not eligible to run for another term. The election will most likely be direct. There has been speculation that Miloš Zeman will not finish his second term.

2019 Czech Social Democratic Party leadership election

A leadership election for the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) was held on 1 March 2019. The incumbent leader Jan Hamáček was elected for second term when he received 433 votes while 57 delegates voted against him and 11 abstained.

2019 Prague 9 by-election election in Czechia

A by-election for the Prague 9 Senate seat in the Czech Republic will be held on 5 and 6 April 2019. The incumbent Senator Zuzana Baudyšová, elected as a candidate of ANO 2011, announced her resignation on 29 January 2019 due to health problems. Jan Jarolím and David Smoljak advanced to the second round.
