Peter Denny FRSE LLD (25 October 1821 – 22 August 1895) was a shipbuilder and shipowner based in Dumbarton, Scotland.
Denny was the son of William Denny (1779–1833) and his wife Christeanne Macintyre. He was first apprenticed to a local lawyer and then to the Dumbarton glassworks. Aged 21 he returned to shipbuilding, which was the established family occupation, and worked as a bookkeeper for Robert Napier and Sons.
In 1844 Peter became a junior partner alongside his brothers in Denny Brothers. He was responsible for managing the offices in that business. In 1849 the company was dissolved and reformed as William Denny and Brothers. In partnership with John McAusland and John Tulloch, he formed a marine engineering company in 1850 (Tulloch and Denny). This complimented Denny's shipbuilding operations. William Denny died in June 1854 leaving Peter as the main partner in Dennys, while his other brother James retired in 1862. Tulloch also retired in 1862 and the engineering company was renamed Denny & Company.
Denny appreciated that to succeed as a shipbuilder it was necessary to obtain orders and therefore involved himself in the shipping world. As a member of the Free Church of Scotland he contributed towards the Free Church settlement in New Zealand and came in contact with Paddy Henderson & Co. He became a partner in their shipping interests, resulting in orders for Denny's for new ships.
In 1859 Denny's expanded into the North Yard and the engine works was enlarged. In 1864 some ground was obtained on the eastern side of the river opposite the original shipyard which remained the property of William Denny's estate. The western yard was surrendered and all operations transferred to the new Leven shipyard by 1867. In 1871 Peter served on the parliamentary committee on the design of warships and in 1876 on the Royal Commission into loss of life and property at sea.
Denny's engaged in a profitable business constructing blockade runner ships during the American civil war and purchased large shareholdings in the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company and Albion shipping company. This led to further orders for ships specially designed to operate in the shallow Irrawady River in Burma.
Peter's eldest son William Denny FRSE (1847–1887) became a partner in the company in 1868 and eventually took over management. He was particularly interested in hull design and was responsible for the construction of the companies testing tanks in 1881 for trialling models of hull designs before construction. Peter now took more interest in diversifying his interests, including becoming a director of Paddy Henderson, British & Burmese Steam Navigation Company, Albion shipping and Rio Tinto Mines. He sought out orders from foreign governments including Spain, Portugal and Belgium and took a financial interest in encouraging local industry. He donated large amounts of money to local hospital charities and to establish educational scholarships. In 1890 he was awarded an honorary doctorate (LLD) by Glasgow university to recognise his charitable works for education.
In 1876 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were William Thomson (Lord Kelvin), Anderson Kirkwood, Allan Thomson and David Stevenson. [1]
On 17 March 1887 William Denny committed suicide in Buenos Aires following disastrous investments in La Platense Flotilla company in 1882. Following his son's death, Peter retired further from his business interests, dying at the family home Helenslee in Dumbarton on 22 August 1895. He left an estate of £200,000 though his lifetime earnings were in the region of £1.5 million (approximately multiply by 100 for 2012 values).
Peter married Helen Leslie on 26 January 1846. They had eight sons including Sir Archibald Denny.
Helen died on 5 March 1905.

It is situated 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of Glasgow city centre, on the south bank of the River Clyde, opposite the mouth of the River Kelvin and the district of Partick. Historically it was part of the County of Lanark.
The Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Limited was a Scottish shipbuilding company in the Govan area on the Clyde in Glasgow. Fairfields, as it is often known, was a major warship builder, turning out many vessels for the Royal Navy and other navies through the First World War and the Second World War. It also built many transatlantic liners, including record-breaking ships for the Cunard Line and Canadian Pacific, such as the Blue Riband-winning sisters RMS Campania and RMS Lucania. At the other end of the scale, Fairfields built fast cross-channel mail steamers and ferries for locations around the world. These included ships for the Bosporus crossing in Istanbul and some of the early ships used by Thomas Cook for developing tourism on the River Nile.
Hercules Linton was a Scottish surveyor, designer, shipbuilder, antiquarian and local councillor, best known as the designer of the Cutty Sark and partner in the yard of Scott and Linton, which built her.

Neafie, Levy & Co., commonly known as Neafie & Levy, was a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania shipbuilding and engineering firm that existed from the middle of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. Described as America's "first specialist marine engineers", Neafie & Levy was probably the first company in the United States to combine the building of iron ships with the manufacture of steam engines to power them. The company was also the largest supplier of screw propellers to other North American shipbuilding firms in its early years, and at its peak in the early 1870s was Philadelphia's busiest and most heavily capitalized shipbuilder.

Sir Edward James Harland, 1st Baronet, was an Ulster-based English shipbuilder and politician. Born in Scarborough in the North Riding of Yorkshire, he was educated at Edinburgh Academy. In 1846, aged 15, he took an apprenticeship at the engineering works of Robert Stephenson and Company in Newcastle upon Tyne. Afterwards he was employed in jobs in Glasgow and again in Newcastle, before moving to Belfast in 1854 to manage Robert Hickson's shipyard at Queen's Island. Four years later he bought the yard and renamed the business Edward James Harland and Company. In 1861 he formed a business partnership with Gustav Wilhelm Wolff, his former personal assistant, creating Harland and Wolff. Later, Harland recruited William James Pirrie as another partner. Edward Harland, Gustav Wolff and William James Pirrie maintained a successful business, receiving regular orders from the White Star Line, before Harland's retirement in 1889, leaving Wolff and Pirrie to manage the shipyard.
Colonel John McAusland Denny was a Scottish businessman and Conservative Party politician.
Edward Withy was born in Bristol, England and in 1869 co-founded a shipbuilding partnership at Hartlepool that eventually became part of Furness Withy. He sold the firm in 1884 and emigrated from England to New Zealand, where he was elected to Member of Parliament in 1887, representing the Auckland electorate of Newton. He was the father of Arthur Withy, journalist and political activist. Like his son, he was a single-taxer and follower of Henry George.
Robert Caird FRSE LLD was a Scottish shipbuilder. He joined the family firm Caird and Company in 1888, later rising to become head of the company.

James Currie FRSE MA LLD JP was a Scottish businessman who was the owner and senior partner of the international shipping company, the Currie Line. He was also a keen amateur botanist, mineralogist and archaeologist, making sufficient impact on the Scottish world of science as to rise to be President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
Sir Archibald Denny, 1st Baronet FRSE LLD (1860–1935), was a Scottish naval architect who was owner of the huge Clyde shipbuilding company of William Denny and Brothers and was granted a baronetcy in 1913, thereby giving birth to the Denny baronets of Dumbarton. Unusually as an owner, he also interested himself directly in the design of ships. He was president of the Institute of Marine Engineers. The company, usually simply referred to as Dennys, had the highest output and tonnage of any of the Clyde shipbuilders, ranking them as one of the world’s largest companies at that time.
Sir William Wallace CBE FRSE LLD was a 20th-century Scottish marine engineer and influential businessman. He was Chairman of Brown Brothers for over 40 years, mainly involved in the technology behind ship construction rather than their design per sae. He was involved with ship design and technological advancement during both world wars, but his ideas were not always successful: including the ill-fated K-class submarines.
