Pheromone is a chemical that triggers a social response in members of the same species.
A pheromone is a secreted or excreted chemical factor that triggers a social response in members of the same species. Pheromones are chemicals capable of acting like hormones outside the body of the secreting individual, to impact the behavior of the receiving individuals. There are alarm pheromones, food trail pheromones, sex pheromones, and many others that affect behavior or physiology. Pheromones are used from basic unicellular prokaryotes to complex multicellular eukaryotes. Their use among insects has been particularly well documented. In addition, some vertebrates, plants and ciliates communicate by using pheromones.

The track "Bundy" was featured in the video games NHL 06 and Burnout Revenge for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 and Burnout Legends for the PSP. "Bundy" is also included in the end credits of the film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, but is not included in the film's soundtrack.

The song is delivered from an androgynous male perspective to a woman, wherein Prince explores the possibilities of a more intimate relationship if he were his lover's platonic girlfriend. Trouser Press names the song as one of the album's highlights, noting that it "redefines a relationship in a surprisingly mature way." It is believed that "If I Was Your Girlfriend" deals with the jealousy Prince felt at the close bond shared between then girlfriend/fiancée Susannah Melvoin with her twin sister Wendy.

Prince eventually compromised with label executives and shortened the length of the release to a double album.
