The Police Commissioner of Mumbai is the chief of the Mumbai Police, and an officer of the Indian Police Service. The Mumbai Police Commissioner is appointed by the Maharashtra State Government on the recommendation by the Establishment Board, which includes Additional Chief Secretary—Home department and other senior bureaucrats.

The first commissioner was Frank Souter, who was appointed in 1864. [1]

The headquarters are opposite Crawford Market in South Mumbai.

Criticism

Julio Ribeiro wrote that some commissioners are appointed by lobbying. They are expected to repay the favour to the politicians. They transfer junior officials to positions where the politicians can make maximum illegal money. [2]

G.H. Wanjara was an Indian police officer who served as the Inspector General of Police in Bombay from 1946 to 1950. He was also the first Indian to hold this position, as he succeeded Sir Frank Souter, the last British officer to head the Bombay police. Wanjara was involved in the security arrangements for the visit of Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, to Bombay in 1947. He was also responsible for maintaining law and order during the turbulent period of partition and independence. Wanjara was awarded the King’s Police Medal in 1948 for his distinguished service.He join a duty on 1914.

Sir Pherozeshah Merwanjee Mehta was an Indian politician and lawyer from Bombay. He was knighted by the British Government in India for his service to the law. Mehta was one of the founding members and President of the Indian National Congress in 1890 held at Calcutta.

The 2008 Mumbai attacks were a series of terrorist attacks that took place in November 2008, when 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a militant Islamist organisation from Pakistan, carried out 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks lasting four days across Mumbai. The attacks, which drew widespread global condemnation, began on Wednesday 26 November and lasted until Saturday 29 November 2008. A total of 175 people died, including nine of the attackers, with more than 300 injured.

Hemant Kamlakar Karkare was the chief of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS). He was killed in action during the 2008 Mumbai attacks. In 2009, he was posthumously given the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry decoration.

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab was a Pakistani terrorist and a member of the Islamic terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba through which he took part in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks in Maharashtra, India. Kasab, alongside fellow Lashkar-e-Taiba recruit Ismail Khan, killed 72 people during the attacks, most of them at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Kasab was the only attacker captured alive by police.

Rakesh Maria is a former Indian Police Officer. He last served as the Director General of Home Guard. Before that he served as the Police Commissioner of Mumbai.

Anil Vasantrao Deshmukh is an Indian politician from the state of Maharashtra. He is a senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party. Deshmukh served as the Minister for Home Affairs in Government of Maharashtra between 2019 and 2021. Deshmukh resigned in 2021 as the Home Minister of Maharashtra due to allegations of extortion and laundering charges and is currently in judicial custody.

Arup Patnaik is a retired Indian Police Service officer who was the 36th Police Commissioner of Mumbai. He is revered as one of the most dynamic and respected IPS officers of the Maharashtra cadre. He retired on 30 September 2015 after a distinguished career in the Maharashtra Police spanning over 36 years in service. He is a recipient of the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2003 and the Indian Police Medal for meritorious services in 1994. Known for his integrity and fearlessness, Patnaik is the first and only Odia IPS officer to hold the post of Police Commissioner of Mumbai.

The Bombay Dog Riots, also known as the 1832 Bombay Riots, were a series of protest actions that devolved into rioting in the city of Mumbai, India. The riots were sparked by an attempt by the British government to exterminate the city's stray dogs, controversial for Parsis due to dogs being considered sacred in the Zoroastrian religion. The event was the first instance of rioting in the modern history of Mumbai.

The Parsi–Muslim riots occurred in 1851 in Bombay, and were reprised in 1874 in parts of Gujarat. These marked the beginning of a period of tension in the two communities. The first riot took place over the blurred depiction of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad, and his appearance in a public print by a Parsi newspaper, Chitra Gyan Darpan, in October 1851. A second riot place on May 1857,over a Parsi named Bejonji Sheriaiji Bharucha was accused of disrespecting a mosque by some Muslims. A third riot took place on 13 February 1874, over an article on the life of Muhammad in a book entitled Famous Prophets and Communities.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sanjay Barve</span> Former Commissioner of Mumbai Police

Sanjay Barve is an Indian police officer from 1987 batch. He was the Police Commissioner of Mumbai, taking charge on 28 February 2019, succeeding Subodh Kumar Jaiswal. Barve was succeeded by Param Bir Singh on 29 February 2020. Barve was previously the director general of the Anti Corruption Bureau, Maharashtra, from 18 September 2018. He has also held the posts of Deputy Commissioner of Police as well as an additional charge as head of the State Intelligence Department. He has been the Director of the Maharashtra Police Academy. He was part of a special team which investigated Abdul Karim Telgi. He was awarded the President's Police Medal in 2006.

Subodh Kumar Jaiswal is an Indian police officer who served as the director of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He is a 1985 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and former Director General of Police, Maharashtra. He was previously the police commissioner of Mumbai, the largest city in India and the seventh most populous city in the world. Jaiswal was with the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India's external intelligence agency for nine years, during which he served as the additional secretary of R&AW for three years. Jaiswal has also served in Intelligence Bureau and Maharashtra ATS Chief. He was the head of the Central Industrial Security Force. Jaiswal's career began in 1985 as a trainee officer in Aurangabad, where he was subsequently assigned the full posting as the Assistant Commissioner of Police.
