The presidential standard of Northern Cyprus is the official flag used to represent the President of Northern Cyprus. It is a distinctive emblem that symbolizes the authority and presence of the President within the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). [1]

The Presidential Standard of Northern Cyprus is defined by the "Official Flag Law of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus." According to Article 9 of this law, the standard is designed with the following details:

The legal basis for the Presidential Standard of Northern Cyprus is established in the "Flag Law of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus." This law, adopted by the Founding Assembly of the TRNC on March 7, 1984, delineates the specifications and usage protocols for the standard.

According to Article 74 of the TRNC Constitution, the Presidential Standard is officially proclaimed and published in the Official Gazette by the President of Northern Cyprus. [3]

Usage

The Presidential Standard holds significant ceremonial and official importance within Northern Cyprus. It is hoisted on the flagpole at the President's residence and remains raised throughout official visits, both day and night. Additionally, the standard is prominently displayed in the President's office, usually positioned behind their working desk. [3]

During transportation, the Presidential Standard is affixed to the left rear side of the President's vehicle, with the flagpole featuring a chromium-plated top bearing a crescent and star emblem. [4]

Historical significance

Northern Cyprus is recognised only by Turkey, a country which facilitates many of its contacts with the international community. After it was occupied by Turkey, Northern Cyprus' relations with the rest of the world were further complicated by a series of United Nations resolutions which declared its independence legally invalid. A 2004 UN Referendum on settling the Cyprus dispute was accepted by the Turkish Cypriots but rejected by the Greek Cypriots. After that, the European Union declared its intentions to assist in reducing the economic isolation of Northern Cyprus and began giving aid to the territory. However, due to pressure from Greece and the Republic of Cyprus, this aid coming from EU funds cannot be used on Greek Cypriot land and property nor on public bodies. As a result, these funds can be used only on 29 percent of people on the island of Cyprus.
