Proton is a Greek based retail chain of independent retailers (primarily grocery shops) operating as a brand and buying group (or symbol group). All stores are independently owned. The parent company (ELETA LTD) is communally owned with each retailer owning a share. As of 2006, the Proton retail network consists of around 390 stores throughout Greece. They also sell their own brand of cola, Proton Cola.

Independent Grocery Alliance (IGA) is an Australian chain of supermarkets. IGA is owned by Metcash, but individual IGA stores are owned independently. It is the Australian branch of the international American-based Independent Grocers Association. Its main competitors are Woolworths, Coles and Aldi. It is the fourth largest chain, since Aldi overtook Metcash in supermarket revenues. In 2019 it was report that IGA had 7 per cent of the grocery market.

Marinopoulos Super Markets was a Greek retailer. It was formed in 1995 as a 50-50 joint venture between the Greek Marinopoulos Group and the French Carrefour Group, but, in 2012, Carrefour decided to withdraw from the joint venture due to the Greek crisis. It was the biggest retail chain in Greece in terms of both turnover and number of stores. As of 2015, the company operates over 700 stores.
