The Puerto Rico Department of Sports and Recreation is the executive department of the government of Puerto Rico responsible of sports and recreation in the U.S. Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. [1]

The department's headquarters complex is located in Santurce on the banks of the Martín Peña Channel in Santurce, Puerto Rico.

In January 2021, Ray Quiñones was designated by Governor Pedro Pierluisi as Secretary of the department. [2]

History

In October 2008 governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá  inaugurated the new headquarters of the agency on the site of a former slum known as "El Fanguito" in San Juan at a cost of $24 million. [3]

In June 2017 the FBI informed it had indicted seven individuals linked to a $9.8 million for money laundering and fraud while working for the agency from 2013 to 2016. [3] [4] Former secretary of the agency Ramón Orta was among those arrested. [5] In January 2021 Orta was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty. [5]

Cangrejeros de Santurce is the name of several franchises sanctioned by the professional basketball league Baloncesto Superior Nacional (BSN) of Puerto Rico. Named after Santurce, all versions have played out of San Juan. The first franchise was founded in 1918 and began active play in the BSN in 1956, winning titles in 1962 and 1968 before folding. The second iteration of the Cangrejeros played their home games at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum under the ownership of music industry executive Angelo Medina, winning five championships in a six-year span and another in 2007. This version remained active for another decade after winning its last championship. In 2021, a new franchise was approved under the name of Cangrejeros under the ownership of artist Bad Bunny and urban music entrepreneurs Noah Assad and Jonathan García. Teams bearing the name of Cangrejeros have won 8 championships and appeared in 14 BSN finals.

David Enrique "Quique" Bernier Rivera is a Puerto Rican dentist and politician that has served in various roles in public service in Puerto Rico. Bernier first served as executive director of the Office of Youth Affairs of Puerto Rico and was later confirmed as the youngest Secretary of Sports and Recreation of Puerto Rico in history. Four years later, he was unanimously confirmed as Secretary of State of Puerto Rico for the administration of Alejandro García Padilla. He was the 2016 candidate for Governor of Puerto Rico of the Popular Democratic Party.

Abel Nazario Quiñones is former senator at large of the 26th Senate of Puerto Rico and was mayor of Yauco, Puerto Rico. He was first elected in 2000 representing the New Progressive Party (PNP). He was reelected in 2004, 2008 and 2012. Nazario is also the vice president of the PNP and also for the local Republican Party. He was arrested on 12 September 2018 by the FBI for illegal appropriation of federal funds.

Ramón Orta was the Secretary of Sports and Recreation in Puerto Rico. He was appointed by Governor Alejandro García Padilla in 2013. A native of Patillas, Puerto Rico and the son of a former judge, Orta is a graduate of the Sports Magnet School in Puerto Rico's Olympic training facility, the Albergue Olímpico located in Salinas, Puerto Rico.

The Puerto Rico Office for Socioeconomic and Community Development is a government agency of Puerto Rico that manages projects to improve and develop "Special Communities of Puerto Rico",. The agency works with other government agencies, as well as with community members, to improve the infrastructure and economic opportunities of marginalized communities. Its original founding was in 2001 with Law 1-2001 passed by Governor Sila María Calderón. The new entity, employing some of the same people it had under a preceding office, is now responsible for "administering disaster funding".

Andrés Waldemar Volmar Méndez was a Puerto Rican politician and public servant for the New Progressive Party (PNP). He served as the Secretary of Sports and Recreation of Puerto Rico from 2017 to 2018, under Governor Ricardo Rosselló. Volmar ran for mayor of his hometown of Dorado, Puerto Rico on the 2020 Puerto Rican general election, but was defeated by the incumbent Carlos López Rivera. He is currently the host of La Bóveda de TeleOnce.
