Qian Xuan (simplified Chinese :钱选; traditional Chinese :錢選; pinyin :Qián Xuǎn; Wade–Giles :Ch'ien Hsüan; 1235-1305) courtesy name Shun Ju (舜举), pseudonyms Yu Tan (玉潭, "Jade Pool"), Xi Lan Weng (习嬾翁), and Zha Chuan Weng (霅川翁) ) was a Chinese painter from Hu Zhou (湖州) (the present day Wuxing District in Zhejiang) [1] during the late Song dynasty and early Yuan dynasty.



Qian Xuan started as an aspiring scholar-official during the rule of the Southern Song (960–1279). However, he had difficulty climbing the ranks of officialdom. When the Mongol-founded Yuan Dynasty took over the southern regions of China in 1276, he effectively gave up on the idea of a civil administration career. In 1286 his friend Zhao Mengfu found and accepted a position, and so for a time it seemed he could as well. However, he refused on patriotic grounds, while he citing old age in order to avoid difficulties. He nevertheless was considered a Song loyalist.

Qian Xuan's life after 1276 was devoted to painting, and he became noted as a "fur and feathers" painter. He was also adept at bird-and-flower painting, character painting, and landscape painting ( shan shui ). [1] He is known for landscapes that hinted at a longing for a return of native Chinese rule, such as in the work Home Again. He mixed Song realism with an archaic Tang style.

Gu Kaizhi

Gu Kaizhi, courtesy name Changkang (長康), was a Chinese painter and politician. He was a celebrated painter of ancient China. He was born in Wuxi and first painted at Nanjing in 364. In 366, he became an officer. Later he was promoted to royal officer. He was also a talented poet and calligrapher. He wrote three books about painting theory: On Painting (畫論), Introduction of Famous Paintings of Wei and Jin Dynasties (魏晉勝流畫贊) and Painting Yuntai Mountain (畫雲台山記). He wrote: "In figure paintings the clothes and the appearances were not very important. The eyes were the spirit and the decisive factor."

Guo Xi

Guo Xi was a Chinese landscape painter from Henan Province who lived during the Northern Song dynasty. One text entitled "The Lofty Message of Forest and Streams" is attributed to him. The work covers a variety of themes centered on the appropriate way of painting a landscape. He was a court professional, a literatus, well-educated painter who developed an incredibly detailed system of idiomatic brushstrokes which became important for later painters. One of his most famous works is Early Spring, dated 1072. The work demonstrates his innovative techniques for producing multiple perspectives which he called "the angle of totality." This type of visual representation is also called "Floating Perspective", a technique which displaces the static eye of the viewer and highlights the differences between Chinese and Western modes of spatial representation.

The Four Wangs were four Chinese landscape painters in the 17th century, all with the surname Wang. They are best known for their accomplishments in shan shui painting.

Ni Zan

Ni Zan was a Chinese painter during the Yuan and early Ming periods. Along with Huang Gongwang, Wu Zhen, and Wang Meng, he is considered to be one of the Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty.

Jiao Bingzhen

Jiāo Bǐngzhēn, 1689–1726) was a native of Jining, Shandong who became a noted painter and astronomer. In painting he is noteworthy as one of the first Qing dynasty painters to be influenced by the West. He is also among the more significant portrait and miniature painters in the early Qing. He was skilled in painting people, landscapes, and buildings.

Xu Daoning

Xu Daoning was a Chinese painter of the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1279) from Chang'an or Hejian. He started out life by selling medicine prescriptions in Kaifeng. While selling prescriptions, he also began painting nature scenes in the style of Li Cheng. After gaining popularity he took up painting murals for Chinese nobles. His most notable work is Fishermen's Evening Song.

Cui Bai

Cui Bai was a prominent Chinese painter of the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1279). A native of Anhui Province, Cui was best known for paintings of animals and plants. At some point during his life, he traveled to the capital of Kaifeng to seek employment as a court artist, and was accepted by Emperor Shenzong of Song, who admired his works. He became a renowned artist of Shenzong's court, but gained an awkward reputation for his often eccentric behavior.

Zou Yigui

Zou Yigui (1686–1772), style name as Yuanbao (原褒), sobriquet as Xiaoshan (小山) and Erzhi (二知), is a famed Chinese painter in Qing Dynasty. He was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province.

Xiao Yuncong was a famed Chinese landscape painter, calligrapher, and poet during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.

Zhao Yuan is a noted Chinese painter in late Yuan and early Ming Dynasty. His birth and death years are unknown. His courtesy name was Shanzhang (善长), and sobriquet Danlin (丹林). He was born in Ying Cheng (营城). He resided in Suzhou. His painting style most closely resembled that of Wang Meng. Existing works include 晴川送别 and 合溪草堂.

Zhao Zuo, a native of Huating was a noted Chinese painter in Ming Dynasty. His birth and death years are unknown. His style name was 'Wendu' (文度).
