Richie Boulet (born June 14, 1973) is a retired track runner who specialized in the mile, although he also ran in other various middle-distance and long-distance disciplines. He holds a degree in forestry.

Mile run common middle-distance running event

The mile run is a middle-distance foot race.

Middle-distance running events are track races longer than sprints, up to 3000 metres. The standard middle distances are the 800 metres, 1500 metres and mile run, although the 3000 metres may also be classified as a middle-distance event. The 1500 m came about as a result of running ​3 3⁄4 laps of a 400 m outdoor track or ​7 1⁄2 laps of a 200 m indoor track, which were commonplace in continental Europe in the 20th century.

Long-distance running, or endurance running, is a form of continuous running over distances of at least eight kilometres (5 miles). Physiologically, it is largely aerobic in nature and requires stamina as well as mental strength.

Running career

High school

Boulet attended Sir Francis Drake High School. In 1990, he ran the 5000-meter cross country course at the CIF State Championship, placing 3rd in the Division IV race with a time of 15:46 (min:sec). [2] In the 1991 California state outdoor meet, he placed fifth in the 1600-meter race. [3]

Sir Francis Drake High School is a secondary school located in San Anselmo, California. It is named after the English privateer and naval hero Sir Francis Drake, who purportedly landed in the area in 1579. The school's mascot is a pirate named Petey.

Collegiate

Boulet studied and ran at University of California, Berkeley. He was the first Cal athlete to win All-America honors in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track and was coached by Tony Sandoval. In 1994, Cal recruited Polish-born distance runner Magdalena Lewy, who Boulet would eventually marry.

Post-collegiate

After college, Boulet ran professionally for New Balance until 2000. On January 9, 1999, Boulet won the indoor mile at the 1999 New Balance Games at New York, against competition featuring James Njoroge, Tom Nohilly, Scott Anderson, Derek Treadwell, and Matt Holthaus. [4]

Tom Nohilly is a retired track athlete who disciplined in various middle-distance and long-distance events. He represented the United States in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics and the men's short race at the 1999 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Nohilly was particularly prolific in the 3000-meter steeplchase, for which he made two appearances at the 1992 and 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials.

In collegiate competition he ran for University of Arkansas, which was recognized for its prestigious track program which in Lassiter's time included recruits such as Sharif Karie. Lassiter ran professionally for Nike after his college spell.

Will Leer is an American mid-distance runner. He graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, California in May 2007. Leer has represented the United States in international competition.

German Fernandez is an American professional runner from Riverbank, California, known for his performance in high school and collegiate cross country and track and field. He currently trains under Jerry Schumacher for the Bowerman Track Club. He is most well known for running the California Cross Country State Meet course record (14:24), as well as running a new American high-school record, 8:32 for two miles, at the 2008 Nike Outdoor Nationals championship. He also holds the World Junior Indoor Mile record at 3:55.02. A local meet in Riverbank, California, the German Fernandez Distance Carnival, is named after him.

Molly Huddle is an American long-distance runner who competes in track and cross country running events. Huddle set the American record in the 5000 m at the 2014 Herculis Diamond League meet in Fontvieille, Monaco (14:42.64), which has since been broken by Shannon Rowbury and Shelby Houlihan. She also set the American record in the 10,000 m at the 2016 Olympics, with a time of 30:13.17.

Emma Coburn American steeplechaser

Emma Coburn is an American middle distance runner who specializes in the 3000 meter steeplechase. At the 2017 World Championships in London, Coburn won the 3000 metres steeplechase with a time of 9.02.59, breaking her own American record. This made her the first American woman to win a gold medal in the steeplechase at either the World Championships or the Olympics. Previously, she set an American record of 9:07.63 in the 3000 meter steeplechase to win a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. This also made her the first American woman to win any Olympic medal in that event. He then ran at Hartnell College, after which he was recruited to Montana State University. On June 25, 2015, he became a professional runner when he signed a contract to be sponsored by Adidas.
