The Northwest Territories is a federal territory of Canada. At a land area of approximately 1,144,000 km2 (442,000 sq mi) and a 2016 census population of 41,786, it is the second-largest and the most populous of the three territories in Northern Canada. Its estimated population as of 2019 is 44,826. Yellowknife became the territorial capital in 1967, following recommendations by the Carrothers Commission.

It was created under the name North Peace River by the Constitution Amendment Act, 1955, which split the old riding of Peace River into northern and southern portions for the 1956 B.C. election. Its current name has been in use since 1991. Peace River North has been represented by a variety of British Columbia Political paries over the years. The riding has consistently elected political paries that come from the right side of the political spectrum. For many years the riding was represented by the BC Social Credit Party. Currently the riding is represented by the centre-right BC Liberal Party. The left of centre New Democratic party has never been successful in electing a candidate to the BC Legislature, despite fielding numerous candidates since the 1950s.

Nick G. Sibbeston is a retired Canadian Senator representing the Northwest Territories. He was nominated to the Senate by Liberal prime minister Jean Chrétien in 1999 and sat until 2017, when he resigned on his 74th birthday, a year prior to reaching the mandatory retirement age. Prior to that, he was Premier of the Northwest Territories from 1985 to 1987. He was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly in the Northwest Territories representing Mackenzie-Laird from 1970 to 1975 and from 1979 until 1991.

The Northwest Territories is a territory in Northern Canada, specifically in Northwestern Canada between Yukon Territory and Nunavut including part of Victoria Island, Melville Island, and other islands on the western Arctic Archipelago. In addition, Alberta and Saskatchewan were formed from the territory in 1905. In 1999, it was divided again: the eastern portion became the new territory of Nunavut. Yellowknife stands as its largest city and capital. It has a population of 42,800 and has an area of 532,643 sq mi (1,379,540 km2). The current territory lies west of Nunavut, north of latitude 60° north, and east of Yukon.
John Adrian Simpson was a Canadian politician and businessman. Born in Peel County, Ontario, he came west in 1890 and eventually settled in Innisfail, where he opened a lumberyard. He served on Innisfail's first town council, and also in the legislative assemblies of the Northwest Territories and later Alberta; in the last, he acted as deputy speaker.
Robert R. McLeod is a former Canadian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 2007 to 2019, and is the 12th and current premier of the Northwest Territories, having held that position since October 26, 2011.
