Rodney S. Scott served as the 24th Chief of the United States Border Patrol from January 24,2020 to August 14,2021 in both the Trump and Biden administrations.
Scott joined the U.S. Border Patrol on May 11,1992,as a member of Academy Class 252. Has served in various leadership positions within the Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP),including chief patrol agent at El Centro Sector in Imperial,California;deputy chief patrol agent San Diego Sector;patrol agent in charge at the Brown Field Station in San Diego,California;assistant chief in CBP's Office of Anti-Terrorism in Washington,D.C.;and division chief and director for the Incident Management and Operations Coordination Division at CBP Headquarters. As Chief,Scott supported President Trump's border wall,and was critical of Democrats who favored other ways of addressing illegal aliens. [2] Scott refused to support President Biden's directive to stop using legal words like "illegal alien" in favor of descriptors like "migrant". [3] Between March 2021 and May 2021,a record number of unaccompanied children were picked up along the border,which forced many to be placed in shelters after federal border facilities were overwhelmed. [2] [3] In June 2021,Scott released a statement saying he had been "given the option to resign,retire or relocate with no rationale provided...so the new administration can place the person they want in the position". [2] Deputy Chief Raul Ortiz will serve as interim chief. [3]
Scott is married and has two daughters. He grew up in rural areas of Indiana and Arizona. Scott lived in Coronado,California from 1994 to 1997,before moving to Arizona and Washington,D.C. for job assignments. In 2008,Scott and his family moved back to Coronado. [4]

It is one of two international borders that the United States has,the other being the northern Canada–United States border;Mexico has two other borders:with Belize and with Guatemala. The Mexico-U.S. border is the tenth-longest border between two countries in the world.
The Livermore Sector of the Border Patrol was dismantled in 2004. This was part of a shift of Border Patrol enforcement away from the interior and to the border.
The Secure Fence Act of 2006,also labelled H.R. 6061,is an act of the United States Congress which authorized and partially funded the construction of 700 miles (1,125 km) of fencing along the Mexican border. The Act was signed into law on October 26,2006,by U.S. President George W. Bush,who stated at the time that the Act would "help protect the American people",would "make our borders more secure",and was "an important step toward immigration reform".

Friendship Park is a half-acre (0.20 ha) binational park located along the United States-Mexico border in the San Diego–Tijuana region. Located within the larger Border Field State Park in California's San Diego county,the park includes the border fence dividing the two countries where residents of both countries can meet in person. On the U.S. side,the park used to be part of the Monument Mesa picnic area but is now wholly located on federal property under the Department of Homeland Security and is heavily monitored by U.S. Border Patrols 24 hours a day. To the south of this place is the Playas de Tijuana,Baja California. In 2022 the U.S. approved the construction of a wall,but announced soon after plans for the construction had been put on hold. In January 2023,it was announced that construction would proceed.

He previously served as acting deputy commissioner of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection from 2017 to 2018 and chief of the United States Border Patrol in 2017. In 2018,U.S. president Donald Trump awarded Vitiello a Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Executive in the Senior Executive Service.

She was the first woman to serve as Chief of the Border Patrol,a career law enforcement position. Provost held numerous positions during her 25-year career in the Border Patrol,including serving as Deputy Chief beginning in October 2016,and Acting Chief from April 2017 until her promotion in August 2018.

The Trump administration has detained migrants attempting to enter the United States at the United States–Mexico border. Government reports from the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General in May 2019 and July 2019 found that migrants had been detained under conditions that failed federal standards. These conditions have included prolonged detention,overcrowding,and poor hygiene and food standards.
A Title 42 expulsion is the removal by the U.S. government of a person who had recently been in a country where a communicable disease was present. The extent of authority for contagion-related expulsions is set out by law in 42 U.S.C. § 265. During the COVID-19 pandemic,the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the Trump administration used this provision to generally block land entry for many migrants. This practice was initially continued by the Biden administration before the program was ended with the end of the COVID-19 national emergency on May 12,2023. Title 42 of the United States Code includes numerous sections dealing with public health,social welfare,and civil rights,but,in the context of immigration,the phrase "Title 42" came to be used to refer specifically to expulsions under section 265.
In September 2021,an incident occurred involving migrants from Haiti crossing into the United States at the Del Rio,Texas,sector of the Mexico–US border. President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris claimed the migrants were being whipped by horse-mounted US Border Patrol agents. In July 2022,the US Customs and Border Protection concluded after an investigation that no migrants in fact had been whipped.
