Sheikh Muhammad Abul Kalam Azad (born April 30,1967) is a two star Admiral of Bangladesh and incumbent high commissioner of Bangladesh to Maldives. He is former Commander of Bangladesh Navy Fleet. [3] Earlier he held a range of salient appointments,namely Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority, [4] Chairman of Mongla port Authority,Director of Naval Intelligence &Naval Administrative Authority Dhaka. [5] [6]
Sheikh Muhammad Abul Kalam Azad was born into the Bengali Muslim noble Sheikh family of Mohendrapur village of Kumarkhali Upazila of Kushtia District on April 30,1967. [4] He is the youngest son of late Sheikh Osman Gani and Khadeza Begum. He is an alumnus of the first batch of Pabna Cadet College.
He joined Bangladesh Navy in January 1985 as an officer cadet and was commissioned in executive branch on July 1,1987. During his career,Rear Admiral Azad went through various education and training courses both at home and abroad. Namely,he completed his International Sub Lieutenant Course (ISLC) in Britannia Royal Naval College,Dartmouth,Devon,England and finished his initial staff course from Royal Naval College,Greenwich,London. He went to Army Language School in Istanbul,Turkey in 1996 for a Turkish language course and also did a gunnery specialization course from the Naval Training Centre in Istanbul.
Admiral Azad successfully completed his command and staff course at the session 1999–2000 from Defence services command and staff college,Mirpur,Dhaka,Bangladesh. And also is an alumnus of National Defence College,Mirpur. Furthermore,he completed an International humanitarian law course in Hyderabad,India. He also got the opportunity to attend The Executive Decision Making Course from Naval Postgraduate School,Monterey,California,United States.
Being a successful gunner,Admiral Azad commanded almost all types of ships and establishments. His sea command includes two frigates,. BNS Umar Farooq and BNS Osman. The two frigates are the first ever frigate and the first ever guided missile frigate of the Bangladesh Navy. The admiral also commanded two OPVs,BNS Sangu and BNS Madhumati,and also one small patrol craft,BNS Tamjid. The Admiral's shore commands have included two major naval bases of the Bangladesh Navy,BNS Titumir &BNS Issa Khan.
His key staff appointment includes Staff Officer of Naval Training (SOT),Staff officer operations (SOO) of Commander Khulna Naval area and Officer-in- Charge of field intelligence staff (FIS),Khulna. Being a specialized gunnery officer the Admiral was also the officer in charge of Gunnery School,BNS Isa Khan. In 23 February 2022,he appointed as the high commissioner of Maldives. [8]
The Bangladesh Armed Forces are the combined military forces of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. It consists of the three uniformed military services:the Bangladesh Army,the Bangladesh Navy and the Bangladesh Air Force. The Armed Forces are under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Defence of the Government of Bangladesh,and is directly administered by the Armed Forces Division of the Prime Minister's Office. The President of Bangladesh serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. Border Guard Bangladesh and Bangladesh Coast Guard are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs during peacetime,but during wartime they fall under the command of Bangladesh Army and Bangladesh Navy respectively.
The Bangladesh Navy is the naval warfare branch of the Bangladesh Armed Forces,responsible for Bangladesh's 118,813 square kilometres (45,874 sq mi) of maritime territorial area,and the defence of important harbours,military bases and economic zones. The primary role of the Bangladesh Navy is to protect the country's economic and military interests at home and abroad. The Bangladesh navy is also a front line disaster management force in Bangladesh,and participates in humanitarian missions abroad. It is a key regional player in counter terrorism efforts,and engages in global peacekeeping with the United Nations.
Musharraf Husain Khan was a Bangladesh Navy Rear Admiral who has served as the chief of the Bangladesh Navy from 7 November 1973 to 3 November 1979. After the Bangladesh war of Independence,Admiral Khan was appointed as the 1st Chief of the Naval Staff of the Bangladesh Navy in November 1973 by the Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. During his tenure,Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on December 10,1974 commissioned Bangladesh Navy's largest training base BNS Issa Khan and also handed over “naval ensign”to Bangladesh Navy on the same day. Admiral M. H. Khan joined the Pakistan Navy in 1950. Upon selection as a Cadet into the Pakistan Navy,he was sent to the Royal Navy for training. In 1951 he entered Royal Naval College Dartmouth and after a few years of sea time on RN ships he subsequently,as a Sub Lieutenant was selected to attend the Royal Naval College,Greenwich in 1954. He served on several Royal Naval ships including the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle. He continued his career in the Pakistan Navy and was on a fast track where he achieved the rank of Captain and commanded several of the primary Naval Ships of the Pakistan Navy,including the cruiser PNS Babur and the flag ship destroyer PNS Khaibar. Admiral Khan created the Bangladesh Navy from scratch in very difficult circumstances but was able to create and implement the framework upon which the Bangladesh Navy has been built,following the scope and plan that he laid out in his six plus years as Naval Chief.

Abu Sayed Mohammad Abdul Awal (G),ndc,MDS,psc,BN is a retired Bangladesh Navy Rear Admiral and former Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Personnel).
Admiral M Farid Habib,(ND),NBP,OSP,BCGM,ndc,psc,was the 14th Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Navy. He is the first ever four-star Admiral in the history of Bangladesh Navy. Now He serves as a Chairman of Trustee Board of University of Scholars.
Mohammad Nizamuddin Ahmed was an admiral in the Bangladesh Navy and the former Chief of Naval Staff. He previously served as the Director of Coast Guard Operations and commander of Chittagong Naval Command (COMCHIT). He also served in Naval Headquarters as Director of Personnel Services and Secretary to the Chief of Naval Staff. Inter Service Public Relations Directorate (ISPR) announced Ahmed's nomination to succeed Admiral Farid Habib. Ahmed began serving as the 15th Chief of Naval Staff on 27 January 2016.
Mohammad Makbul Hossain,NBP,OSP,BCGMS,ndu,psc was a Rear Admiral of Bangladesh Navy. He was the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operation). He also served as Director General of Bangladesh Coast Guard.
Vice Admiral Suraj Berry,AVSM,NM,VSM is a serving Flag officer in the Indian Navy. He currently serves as the Commander-in-Chief,Strategic Forces Command. He previously served as the Chief of Personnel,as the Controller of Personnel Services and as Chief of Staff of the Andaman and Nicobar Command. He has also commanded the Eastern Fleet and was the Commissioning Commanding Officer of the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
Rear Admiral Mohammad Lokmanur Rahman,NBP,NGP,ndu,psc is a retired two-star admiral in Bangladesh Navy who served as the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Logistics). He also served as the Administrative Authority Dhaka and as the Director Purchase (Navy) at DGDP.
Admiral M Shaheen Iqbal,NBP,NUP,ndc,afwc,psc is a retired four star Admiral of the Bangladesh Navy who served as Chief of the Naval Staff till 24 July 2023. Previously he held the posts of Assistant Chief of Naval Staff Operations &Assistant Chief of Naval Staff Personnel in Naval Headquarters.
Vice Admiral Elenjikal Chandy Kuruvila,PVSM,AVSM was a former Flag officer in the Indian Navy. He was the Fleet commander of the Western Fleet during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971,for which he was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal. He later led the Southern Naval Area and then served as the chairman and managing director of Mazagon Dock Limited.
Ashraful Hoq Chowdhury ndu,afwc,psc,BCGM,BN is a rear admiral of the Bangladesh Navy and former director general of the Bangladesh Coast Guard. Prior to this appointment,he was the Commander of the Khulna Naval Area.
Mohammad Shahjahan is a retired two star admiral of Bangladesh who was currently posted at National Defence College as Senior Directing Staff (SDS). Prior to that,he was the Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority. Earlier he served as the chairman of the Mongla Port Authority. In previous he has also served as the Deputy Director General of Bangladesh Coast Guard.
Mohammad Musa is a two star military admiral of Bangladesh Navy. He is the incumbent Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University. Prior to joining here,he served as the Chairman of Mongla Port Authority. Prior to this appointment,he was Commander of Khulna Naval Area.
Rear Admiral Mohammad Mozammel Haque OSP,NUP,ndc,psc is a retired two-star admiral in Bangladesh Navy who served as the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Personnel). Prior to join here,he was Commander of Chattogram Naval Area (COMCHIT). Prior to assumption of the Commander Chattogram Naval Area on 4 February 2020,he served as Chairman of Mongla Port Authority.
Rear Admiral Mohammad Sohail (TAS),NUP,PPM,psc,BN is a two-star admiral in Bangladesh Navy who is currently serving as Chairman of Chattogram Port Authority. Prior to join here he was Chairman of Payra Port Authority. Before that,he was serving as the Director of Submarine at the Navy Headquarters. He also served as Director of Naval Intelligence and commanded BNS Haji Mohshin while he was Commodore.
Rear Admiral Mir Ershad Ali,OSP,NPP,ndc,psc,BN is a two-star admiral in Bangladesh Navy. He is the incumbent Director General of the Bangladesh Coast Guard. Prior to this appointment,he served as Chairman of Mongla Port Authority and before that Commander of Bangladesh Navy Fleet. He also served as Director of Naval Intelligence (DNI) at Naval Headquarters. He elevated to the Rear Admiral rank from Commodore on 25 January 2022.
BNS Mongla is a naval base of the Bangladesh Navy located in the southwestern part of Bangladesh. It is situated on the banks of the Pussur River in Mongla Upazila of Bagerhat district,about 70 kilometers south of Khulna city.
