Professor Dr. Saiful Islam is a Bangladeshi academic who is the current vice-chancellor of Dhaka International University. Previously he served as the 13th vice-chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Before, he worked as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Primeasia University.

Education

Islam earned his bachelor's and master's in electrical engineering from BUET in 1975 and 1977 respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Cambridge University in 1986. [1]

Career

Saiful started his teaching career as a lecturer of the Department of Electrical Engineering of BUET in May 1975. He became a professor in 1988. He served as the dean of the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering during 1995–1997. [1] On 22 June 2016, Islam was selected as the 13th vice-chancellor of BUET. The post was vacant since Khaleda Ekram had died on 24 May 2016. [2]

From August 2013 until June 2016, Islam worked as the pro-vice-chancellor of Primeasia University, a private university in Dhaka, after he was appointed by the President of Bangladesh. [1]

Controversy

Following the murder of Abrar Fahad, a second year EEE student and resident at the Sher-e-Bangla Hall of BUET, on 7 October 2019, massive protest spread all over the university campus. [3] But Islam didn't show up after the murder incident, resulting in tremendous criticism throughout the country. [4] [5] Prime Minister also criticized him for his absence. [6] Later on 9 October 2019 he went to visit victim Abrar's home at Kushtia, where he met immense public protest and couldn't enter his home. [7] The Teachers' Association of BUET and Alumni Association of BUET demanded his resignation as vice-chancellor due to his failure. [8] [9]

She was the former dean of the faculty of architecture and planning and head of the department of architecture at BUET. She was the first woman to be appointed as the vice-chancellor of BUET. She held the position from September 2014 until her death in May 2016.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Murder of Abrar Fahad</span> A brutal murder case of 2019

Abrar Fahad, a second year student of electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) department of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was tortured and then killed by BUET's Chhatra League leaders inside BUET's Sher-e-Bangla Hall. Abrar's murderers have gotten a death sentence. An autopsy stated that Fahad was beaten to death by a blunt object.

The Feni River is a trans-boundary river located in Bangladesh, and the water rights have been a source of dispute between India and Bangladesh. It originates in the South Tripura district and flows through Sabroom town, entering Bangladesh. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Bangladesh and India, allowing India to withdraw 1.82 cubic feet per second of water from the Feni River. These two countries have signed seven bilateral documents concerning the water disputes.

Muhammad Fazli Ilahi is a Bangladeshi academic, engineer, and educationist who is the current vice-chancellor of Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology. Previously Ilahi served as the Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University of Technology from 4 January 2003 to 31 March 2008. He was also a professor of Mechanical Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.

The Bangladesh Chhatra League, formerly East Pakistan Student League, often simply called the Chhatra League, is a students' political organisation in Bangladesh, founded by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 4 January 1948. BSL is the student wing of the Bangladesh Awami League. It's played important role in the Bangladesh War of Independence but after 1972 it split into two factions on the basis of alliance to Shekh Mujibur Rahman. But later it has been repeatedly accused of using torture, extortion, violence, forced prostitution, and killings to instill fear. At least 33 people were killed and 1,500 got seriously injured from attacks by BSL between 2009 and 2014. Number of fatalities rose to 129 between 2014 and 2018 while 31 people were killed in 2018 alone.
