Salerno (foaled 1965 in Kentucky) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who compiled a record of 8-3-8 in 33 career starts and retired in 1969 with earnings of $103,149. He was owned by Alice and James P. Mills and trained by William H. Turner, Jr. who went on to train the 1977 U.S. Triple Crown winner, Seattle Slew.

Thoroughbreds are considered "hot-blooded" horses that are known for their agility, speed, and spirit.

Horse racing is an equestrian performance sport, typically involving two or more horses ridden by jockeys over a set distance for competition. It is one of the most ancient of all sports, as its basic premise – to identify which of two or more horses is the fastest over a set course or distance – has been unchanged since at least classical antiquity.

A grandson of Ribot, among Salerno's most important success came as a two-year-old when he won the 1967 Remsen Stakes. The following year, he had a second-place finish in the Withers Stakes.

Ribot was a British-bred Italian-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who is one of the Timeform top-rated racehorses of all time. Undefeated in sixteen races, he won over all distances, from 5 furlongs (1,000m) to 1m 7f (3,000m) in three countries and on all types of track conditions. He was the best Italian two-year-old of 1954, when his three wins included the Gran Criterium. He won his first four races of 1955 in Italy before being sent to France where he won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. In the following year he was even better, recording wide-margin victories in both the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

The Remsen Stakes is an American Grade II race for Thoroughbred horse race run annually near the end of November at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York. The one and one-eighths mile race is open to two-year-olds and currently offers a purse of $250,000.

The Withers Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds willing to compete one and one-sixteenth mile on the dirt. Held at Aqueduct Racetrack in February, it is a Grade III event, and currently offers a purse of $250,000.

Salerno was retired to his owner's Hickory Tree Farm in Middleburg, Virginia.

Grey Lag American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Grey Lag (1918–1942) was a Thoroughbred race horse born in Kentucky and bred by John E. Madden. At his Hamburg Place near Lexington, Kentucky, Maddon had a good stallion called Star Shoot which he bred to all of his mares. Out of a failed racemare called Miss Minnie who had produced no previous winners, he got Grey Lag. In his later days, Maddon said Grey Lag was the best horse he ever bred.

Nashwan was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After winning both his starts as a two-year-old, he developed into an outstanding performer in the spring and summer of 1989, completing a unique four-timer when winning the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, Eclipse Stakes, and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. After sustaining his only defeat in the Prix Niel in September, he was retired to stud where he was a successful sire of winners.

He was retired to stud duties in New Jersey when his five-year racing career ended, having recorded 23 wins from 36 starts. After a promising second at York in August he recorded a major upeset by winning the St Leger Stakes. He was retired soon afterwards and stood as a breeding stallion in Britain and Argentina. He had little success as a sire of winners.

Four Course was a British Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the best two-year-old fillies of her generation in England when she won three of her four races, namely the July Stakes, Richmond Stakes and Gimcrack Stakes. In the following spring she won the 1000 Guineas and finished second in both the Epsom Oaks and the Falmouth Stakes. She was retired at the end of the year but died before she could make and mark as a broodmare.
