The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office (SBSO) provides law enforcement for the unincorporated areas of Santa Barbara County, California, as well as several cities within the county. The cities that the Sheriff's Office provides police services for include Buellton, Carpinteria, Goleta and Solvang. [4] In total the 640 full-time employees of the Sheriff's Office are responsible for 2,745 square miles (7,110 km2) of the county. [5]

History

Founded in 1850, the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office is the oldest law enforcement agency in the state. [1] In its early days, the department battled outlaws Salomon Pico and Jack Powers. Initially having a single Sheriff, aided only by a jailer and guard in charge of the chain gang, the department now has over 600 full-time employees.

North County Operations Division

The North County Operations Division starts at the Gaviota Tunnel and extends north to the San Luis Obispo County line as well as east to the Kern County and Ventura County lines. The division has patrol stations in Buellton, Lompoc, New Cuyama, Santa Maria and Solvang. [6]

South County Operations Division

The South County Operations Division boundaries extend south from Gaviota Tunnel to the Ventura County line and west, from the crest of the Santa Ynez Mountains to three islands in the Santa Barbara Channel with patrol stations in Carpinteria, Goleta and Isla Vista. [6]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gaviota Tunnel</span> Tunnel along US Route 101 in Gaviota State Park, California, United States

The Gaviota Tunnel is a tunnel on U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 completed in 1953 in the center of Gaviota State Park, 33 miles (53 km) northwest of Santa Barbara, California on the Gaviota Coast. It is 420 feet (130 m) long and 17.5 feet (5.3 m) tall. Only the northbound lanes of US 101 pass through it, as the southbound lanes descend from Gaviota Pass through a narrow canyon to the west of the tunnel. Because it is the only major route between the Santa Barbara County South Coast and the Santa Ynez Valley, bicycles are allowed through it. There is a rest area for both southbound and northbound lanes on the southern end of the tunnel, the southernmost one along U.S. Route 101.

The airport does not have a control tower but does offer some services, including 24-hour access to both 100LL and Jet A self-service fuel and tie-downs for transient aircraft.

In 2021, the system had a ridership of 3,222,100, or about 14,700 per weekday as of the second quarter of 2022.

The Clean Air Express provides commuter bus service in portions of Santa Barbara County, California, with service between the cities of Santa Barbara, Lompoc, Santa Maria, and Goleta, California. In 1991, the service was formed to provide commuter service and to alleviate traffic congestion. The Clean Air Express is funded by Santa Barbara County Measure A funds.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Coldwater Sandstone</span> Eocene geologic unit in Southern California

The Coldwater Sandstone is a sedimentary geologic unit of Eocene age found in Southern California, primarily in and south of the Santa Ynez Mountains of Santa Barbara County, and east into Ventura County. It consists primarily of massive arkosic sandstone with some siltstone and shale. Being exceptionally resistant to erosion, outcrops of the Coldwater form some of the most dramatic terrain on the south slope of the Santa Ynez Mountains, with immense white sculpted slabs forming peaks, hogback ridges, and sheer cliff faces.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office is the principal law enforcement agency that serves Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. It provides law enforcement services for the county's freeways, Milwaukee County Courthouse, the Milwaukee County Criminal Justice Facility, the county-owned Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, and 156 Milwaukee County Parks system, including all of the Milwaukee County lakefront. At one time it was the largest sheriff's department in the state of Wisconsin, with about 750 deputy sheriffs. By 2015 the agency had reduced the number of sworn personnel to approximately 300. The Refugio oil spill on May 19, 2015, deposited 142,800 U.S. gallons of crude oil onto one of the most biologically diverse areas of the West Coast of the United States. The corroded pipeline blamed for the spill closed indefinitely, resulting in financial impacts to the county estimated as high as $74 million as it and a related pipeline remained out of service for three years. The cost of the cleanup was estimated by the company to be $96 million with overall expenses including expected legal claims and potential settlements to be around $257 million.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office</span> Law enforcement agency in Florida, U.S.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office (SRSO) is the primary law enforcement agency of Santa Rosa County, Florida. Both the cities of Gulf Breeze and Milton operates their own LEOs ; however, the sheriff's office operates the majority of law enforcement operations within Milton. SRSO is headed by a sheriff, who serves a four-year term and is elected in a partisan primary election.
