The Santiago de Chuco Province is one of twelve provinces of the La Libertad Region in Peru. The capital of this province is the city of Santiago de Chuco.
The province is divided into eight districts, which are:
On July 23, 1610, a group of immigrants were allowed to found a village, which would serve as capital city and as headquarters for both mining and related wheat sowing activities. Among Santiago de Chuco's "Founding Fathers", who arrived first in Andaymarca, we find Captain Don Diego de la Serna, immigrants Domingo Pérez de Vásquéz, José de Pelaez, Lino Benítes de los Niños, Miguel de Estremadura, Rodrigo de los Bejarano, Fernando de Alva, García de Paredes, Lorenzo de Alcántara, Juan Bautista de Ruiz and the priest Francisco de Asís Centurión, who was born in Santiago de Compostela. Father de Asís Centurión was he who got "Santiago, El Mayor" to become the main saint of the town.
On July 25, 1610, in front of an altar which was set in a place named "Picchi-Paccha", a mass of thanksgiving was celebrated;the "Foundation First Stone" was then placed. The distribution of lands for house building took place and the architectural design of the city and church were outlined. The City Church would later be inaugurated on July 25, 1616. In this same year, the town was given its current and definitive name, Santiago de Chuco, by the Peruvian government.
In 1863, the congressman for Huamachuco, Don Manuel Natividad Porras, filed a bill for Provincial Status for Santiago de Chuco District. The Bill failed to be enacted at that time due to the sudden death of Don Manuel Natividad Porras. On November 3, 1900, through support of congressman Tomás Ganoza Cavero (who carried on with Manuel Porras's work), President Eduardo López de Romaña passed the bill which granted Provincial Status to the Santiago de Chuco District.

César Abraham Vallejo Mendoza was a Peruvian poet, writer, playwright, and journalist. Although he published only two books of poetry during his lifetime, he is considered one of the great poetic innovators of the 20th century in any language. He was always a step ahead of literary currents, and each of his books was distinct from the others, and, in its own sense, revolutionary. Thomas Merton called him "the greatest universal poet since Dante". The late British poet, critic and biographer Martin Seymour-Smith, a leading authority on world literature, called Vallejo "the greatest twentieth-century poet in any language." He was a member of the intellectual community called North Group formed in the Peruvian north coastal city of Trujillo.
Trujillo is a city in coastal northwestern Peru and the capital of the Department of La Libertad. It is the third most populous city and center of the third most populous metropolitan area of Peru. It is located on the banks of the Moche River, near its mouth at the Pacific Ocean, in the Moche Valley. This was a site of the great prehistoric Moche and Chimu cultures before the Inca conquest and subsequent expansion.
La Libertad is a region in northwestern Peru. Formerly it was known as the Department of La Libertad. It is bordered by the Lambayeque, Cajamarca and Amazonas regions on the north, the San Martín Region on the east, the Ancash and Huánuco regions on the south and the Pacific Ocean on the west. Its capital is Trujillo, which is the nation's third biggest city. The region's main port is Salaverry, one of Peru's largest ports. The name of the region is Spanish for "freedom" or "liberty"; it was named in honor of the Intendencia of Trujillo's proclaiming independence from Spain in 1820 and fighting for that. It is the ninth smallest department in Peru, but it is also its second most populous department after Piura and its second most densely populated department after Lambayeque.
Raúl Porras Barrenechea was a Peruvian diplomat, historian and politician. He was President of the Senate in 1957 and Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1958 and 1960. A well-known figure of the student movement in San Marcos in the early 20th century, Porras became one of the most prominent hispanist historians of his generation and a leading figure of the Peruvian diplomacy.
Carlos A. Mannucci, known simply as Mannucci, is a professional football club based in Trujillo, La Libertad, Peru. The club is the most important in the city having represented Trujillo in the first division of Peruvian football in multiple occasions since the late 1960s. Its greatest accomplishment are its back-to-back Copa Perú championships and the three Regional Championships of Peru, Northern Zone. The club has a long rivalry with Alfonso Ugarte, and matches between the two teams are known as ''El Clásico Trujillano''. In recent years, it has also developed a rivalry against the other professional club in the city, Universidad César Vallejo.

The National University of Trujillo (UNT) is a major public university located in Trujillo, Peru, capital of the department of La Libertad. The university was founded by Simón Bolívar and José Faustino Sánchez Carrión, who met in Huamachuco; they signed the decree of foundation on May 10, 1824, before Peru's independence from Spain. National University of Trujillo, was the first republican university founded in Peru.
Club Deportivo Universidad César Vallejo is a Peruvian football club located in Trujillo. The club was founded on January 6, 1996 and was promoted in 2003, through the Copa Perú, to the Peruvian First Division and relegated in 2005. In 2007, they were Segunda División champions and were promoted to the first division again.
Huamachuco is a town in northern Peru and capital of the province Sánchez Carrión in La Libertad Region. The city is the seat of the Territorial Prelature of Huamachuco. Lake Sausacocha lies to the northeast.

Víctor Larco Herrera also called commonly Víctor Larco is a district and a city of the north coast of Peru. It is located on a plain along the Pacific Ocean and is linked by a conurbation with Trujillo in La Libertad region. It is considered one of the 9 districts of the urban area known as Trujillo Metropolitano, one of the most populous metropolitan areas of Peru; it is also one of the 11 districts of Trujillo province. Victor Larco is the district that has the highest human development index (HDI) out of Lima Metropolitana, according to a study published by the United Nations Development Programme. In the early twentieth century, for its mild climate and fresh, it was known as Buenos Aires and then in 1945 got the name of Victor Larco Herrera in memory of the illustrious philanthropist Trujillan who was a benefactor of the city.

The North Group was an intellectual community comprising various writers, artists, philosophers, politicians, and intellectuals from Northern Peru, especially from the La Libertad Region. It was founded in 1915 in the city of Trujillo. At first known as the "Bohemians of Trujillo," the community adopted the name "the North Group" in 1923. Early leaders included journalist Antenor Orrego and poet José Eulogio Garrido. Its most prominent members included poet Cesar Vallejo, politician Victor Raul Haya de la Torre, Alcides Spelucín, Macedonio de la Torre, Juan Espejo Asturrizaga, Francisco Xandóval, and Ciro Alegría. This group inspired the work of Eduardo González Viaña, one of its modern successors.
Santiago de Huamán, simply known as Huaman is a traditional village of Trujillo, Peru; it is located on the west of the city in Víctor Larco Herrera. Currently its main attractions are the church, baroque style, and the Patron Festivities that are held every year in May or June.

In December 2013, she was accredited by the national jury of elections as a member of the Congress of the Republic for the National Solidarity Party, after congressman Michael Urtecho was removed from office. She represented the Department of La Libertad from 2014 to 2016.
Luis Alberto Valdez Farías is a Peruvian politician. He is a Congressman representing La Libertad for the 2020–2021 term, and belongs to the Alliance for Progress party.
