North Shields is a town on the north bank of the River Tyne in North East England, eight miles (13 km) north-east of Newcastle upon Tyne. Historically part of Northumberland, its name derives from Middle English schele meaning "temporary sheds or huts used by fishermen".

Shields is the fourth studio album by American indie rock band Grizzly Bear, released on September 18, 2012 by Warp Records. Written and recorded following a six-month hiatus from band activities, the album was influenced by Kimberly's mysterious greyscale, and produced by bassist and multi-instrumentalist Chris Taylor. Preceded by the singles, "Sleeping Ute" and "Yet Again", an expanded version of Shields, entitled Shields Expanded, was released on November 12, 2013, featuring additional tracks recorded during the sessions, demo recordings and remixes. The eight additional tracks were issued as a separate mini-album, entitled Shields: B-Sides.

In the Star Trek fictional universe, shields refer to a 23rd and 24th century technology that provides starships, space stations, and entire planets with limited protection against damage. They are sometimes referred to as deflectors, deflector shields, and screens.

Shields (keelboat)

The Shields class is a class of keelboat devised in 1963 by US sailor Cornelius Shields, one of the foremost proponents of one-design sailing in the US. He conceived of a modern followup to the International One Design (IOD). The new boat would have the balance and beauty of the IOD while incorporating modern trends such as fiberglass construction. Shields commissioned Olin Stephens of Sparkman and Stephens for the design. The boat was intended for use by the yacht clubs around the Long Island Sound near New York, for racing and training.
