Lee Kang-seok is a South Korean speed skater. He is the 2007 and 2009 World Champion for 500 m. At the 2006 Winter Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the 500 m. He is the second South Korean person to win a medal in an event outside of short track speedskating, and he has become a representative to show that South Korea is expanding towards cultivating their athletes to excel in sports other than short track speed skating.

The 1997 Winter Universiade, the XVIII Winter Universiade, took place in Muju and Chonju (Jeonju), South Korea. The snow sport events were held in Muju Resort in Muju, while the ice events were held in Chonju.

Lee Seung-hoon is a South Korean speed skater. He won a gold medal in the 10,000 metres, a silver medal in the 5000 meters at the 2010 Winter Olympics, becoming the first and only Asian man ever to achieve these feats, a gold medal in mass-start at the 2018 Winter Olympics, a gold medal in the mass start at the 2016 World Championships in Kolomna, and a bronze medal in mass-start at the 2022 Winter Olympics. He was a short track speed skater, winning the 2008 World Championship 3000 m super-final and three gold medals at the 2009 Winter Universiade. Lee converted to long track in September 2009, as he failed to earn his spot on the South Korea national short track team in the national trials.

She was one of twenty North Korean athletes at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, where she competed in the 500m short track speed skating event. She finished in 19th place, behind another of her teammates, bronze medalist Hwang Ok-sil.

Ukraine competed at the 2007 Winter Universiade in Turin, Italy. 91 Ukrainian athletes competed in 10 sports out of 12 except for curling and ice hockey. Ukraine won 16 medals, two of which was gold, ranked 11th by number of gold medals and shared with Italy 3rd rank by overall number of medals.

Wang Wei is a former Chinese female short track speed skater. She is a two-time silver medallist of the World Team Championships and a two-time bronze medallist of the 2005 Winter Universiade. During the 2002–03 World Cup season, Wang won two races at the World Cup stage in Salt Lake City. She also achieved one podium during the 2003–04 World Cup season in Jeonju. She won the 1500 m race and finished second in the 1000 m race at the 2004–05 World Cup's stage in Saguenay.

Zhu Mi Lei is a former Chinese female short track speed skater. She is a World champion and a World silver medallist, four-time silver medallist of the World Team Championships, champion and a bronze medallist of the 2007 Asian Winter Games as well as champion and multiple medallist of the Winter Universiade. She was a reserve athlete in the Chinese team at the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Denis Bellotti is a former Italian short track speed skater. He is bronze medallist of the 2007 European Championships. He represented Italy at the home 2007 Winter Universiade where he won a bronze medal in the relay competition. He briefly competed at the World Cup, achieving one personal podium and one relay victory during the 2006–07 season.

Short track speed skating at the 2009 Winter Universiade was held from 19 to 23 February 2009 in the Harbin University of Science and Technology Skating Gym.
