The following is about the qualification rules and the quota allocation for the short track speed skating at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Short track speed skating at the 2018 Winter Olympics was held at the Gangneung Ice Arena in Gangneung, South Korea. The eight events were scheduled to take place between 10 and 22 February 2018.

2018 Winter Olympics 23rd Winter Olympics, Pyeongchang (S. Korea) 2018

The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as PyeongChang 2018, was an international winter multi-sport event that was held between 9 and 25 February 2018 in Pyeongchang County, Gangwon Province, South Korea, with the opening rounds for certain events held on 8 February 2018, the eve of the opening ceremony.

Qualification rules

A total quota of 120 athletes were allowed to compete at the Games (60 men and 60 women). Countries were assigned quotas based on their performance during the 2017–18 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup. Each nation was permitted to enter a maximum of five athletes per gender if it qualified a relay team and three if it did not. Hosts South Korea were guaranteed the full quota of ten athletes. [1] There were a maximum of thirty-two qualifiers for the 500m and 1000m events; thirty-six for the 1500m events; and eight for the relays.

2017–18 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup

The 2017–18 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup was a multi-race tournament over a season for short track speed skating. The season began on 28 September 2017 in Hungary and ended on 19 November 2017. The World Cup was organised by the ISU who also ran world cups and championships in speed skating and figure skating.

Quota allocation

Final quotas were published by the ISU on 23 November 2017. [2] [3] North Korea was allowed to add two entries on 20 January 2018. [4]

Great Britain and Kazakhstan received reallocated spots in the men's 1500m and Kazakhstan received the men's relay spot initially awarded to OAR. [5] Team OAR remained qualified in the women's relay, but only used four of the available five quotas.

Individual distances

The first placed racer (per nation) was ranked based on the three best world cup results, out of four, for each race. This means that multiple skaters could have a part in that score, and ranking. The second and third best were ranked in the same way. For the 500m and 1000m the top 32 qualified, and for the 1500m the top 36 qualified. The next best six nations for each race are shown.

Netherlands at the 2018 Winter Olympics

The Netherlands competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, between 9 and 25 February 2018. Speed skater Jan Smeekens was appointed as flag bearer for the opening ceremony, which was attended by King Willem Alexander, Queen Máxima and Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who also observed the sporting events that featured Dutch competitors.

Lim Hyo-jun is a South Korean short track speed skater. He is the current champion of the Men's 1500 m event in short track speed skating at the Winter Olympics, and also currently holds the Olympic record for the event. Originally starting as a swimmer, Lim took up skating at a young age. Despite multiple injuries early on in his career, he notably won gold at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics upon his international debut in the Boys' 1000 m event. He would later win the 1000 m and 1500 m events in the Budapest leg of the 2017–18 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup and earn selection for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Upon his Olympic debut, Lim won the gold medal, setting a new Olympic record of 2:10.485 in the process, beating Lee Jung-su's previous record set at the 2010 games.
