The Sixth Chen–Chiang summit (Chinese :第六次陳江會談; pinyin :Dì Liù Cì Chén Jiāng Huìtán) is the 6th part of the Chen-Chiang summit of cross-strait meetings. It is held between the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) represented by Chen Yun-lin and Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) represented by Chiang Pin-kung.

Chinese language family of languages

Chinese is a group of related, but in many cases not mutually intelligible, language varieties, forming the Sinitic branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. Chinese is spoken by the Han majority and many minority ethnic groups in China. About 1.2 billion people speak some form of Chinese as their first language.

Hanyu Pinyin, often abbreviated to pinyin, is the official romanization system for Standard Chinese in mainland China and to some extent in Taiwan. It is often used to teach Standard Mandarin Chinese, which is normally written using Chinese characters. The system includes four diacritics denoting tones. Pinyin without tone marks is used to spell Chinese names and words in languages written with the Latin alphabet, and also in certain computer input methods to enter Chinese characters.

The Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits is an organization set up by the People's Republic of China for handling technical or business matters with the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Meeting

The sixth meeting was held from December 20 to 22, 2010 at Grand Hotel, Taipei, Taiwan. [1] SEF had 21 representatives, while ARATs had 20 representatives, both with notable people from the health industry. [2]

Grand Hotel (Taipei) A hotel in Taipei

The Grand Hotel, is a landmark located at Yuanshan (圓山) in Zhongshan District, Taipei, Taiwan. The hotel was established in May 1952 and the main building was completed on October 10, 1973. It is owned by the Duen-Mou Foundation of Taiwan, a non-profit organization, and has played host to many foreign dignitaries who have visited Taipei.

Taipei Special municipality in Republic of China

Taipei, officially known as Taipei City, is the capital and a special municipality of Taiwan. Sitting at the northern tip of the island, Taipei City is an enclave of the municipality of New Taipei City that sits about 25 km (16 mi) southwest of the northern port city Keelung. Most of the city is located in the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed. The basin is bounded by the relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border.

Taiwan state in East Asia

Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC), is a state in East Asia. Nearby states include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the west, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south. It is the most populous state and largest economy that is not a member of the United Nations.

Chen Yunlin signed an agreement on sharing medical information and cooperating in development of new drugs. [3] On the second day Chen Yun-lin sat down to talk with minister of Mainland Affairs Council Lai Shin-Yuan about the many benefits of the collaborations along with Taiwan national dignity issue in cultural and sports events. [4]

Mainland Affairs Council

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) is a cabinet-level administrative agency under the Executive Yuan of Taiwan. The MAC is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of policies between the Republic of China on Taiwan and the People's Republic of China which administers mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. The MAC's counterpart body in the PRC is the Taiwan Affairs Office. Both states officially claim each other's territory, however the Republic of China controls only Taiwan and surrounding islands, and therefore is usually known as "Taiwan", sometimes referred to as the "Free Area" of the Republic of China by the Constitution of the Republic of China. The People's Republic of China controls mainland China as well as Hong Kong, Macau, Hainan, and other islands and is therefore usually known simply as "China".

Lai referred to the controversy with the Contested judgement of taekwondo of 2010 Asian Games as well as Taiwanese actors and actresses being blocked from walking on the red carpet during the Tokyo International Film Festival after a Chinese delegation insisted that they add the word "China" to their country's name. [5]

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is a film festival established in 1985. The event was held biennially from 1985 to 1991 and annually thereafter. Along with the Shanghai International Film Festival, it is one of Asia's competitive film festivals, and the only Japanese festival accredited by the FIAPF.

No Flag of the Republic of China were raised at the hotel. But according to the hotel manager, the flag is only raised during Double Ten Day and new years. [6]

The flag of the Republic of China is the national flag of Taiwan, consisting of a red field with a blue canton bearing a white disc with twelve triangles surrounding it. The disc and triangles symbolize the sun and rays of light emanating from it respectively. In Chinese, the flag is commonly described as Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth to reflect its design attributes.

Protests

On December 22 about 100 pro-Taiwan independence protesters appeared at Taipei Metro Jiannan Road Station to protest against what they alleged were CPC-KMT secretive conspiracy talks, Ma Ying-jeou selling out Taiwan and other complaints about Lai Shin-Yuan. [7] Other independence supporters also tried to get into the Neihu Grand victoria hotel where Lai and Chen would meet. [8]

Ma Ying-jeou is a Taiwanese politician who served as President of the Republic of China from 2008 to 2016. His previous political roles include Justice Minister (1993–96) and Mayor of Taipei (1998–2006). He was also the Chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) between 2005–2007 and 2009–2014.

Unsigned

The investment agreement was not signed due to complexity and sensitivity. One negotiator said that mainland was concerned about bringing international arbitrators to settle disputes. This move would elevate Taiwan's sovereignty status. [9] For example, Taiwan has already been granted visa-free status in 2010 for the European Union Schengen Area. [10]

The Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) is a preferential trade agreement between the governments of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China that aims to reduce tariffs and commercial barriers between the two sides. The pact, signed on June 29, 2010, in Chongqing, was seen as the most significant agreement since the two sides split after the Chinese Civil War in 1949, since neither government recognize the other as "countries".
