Socialist Movement Pakistan (SMP) is a Trotskyist political party in Pakistan affiliated to the Committee for a Workers' International.

The SMP was formally founded in Lahore on 17 April 2004, with the merger of the United Socialist Party (a sympathising section of the CWI) and the Marxist Workers' Tendency. [1]

The SMP is highly critical of US policy and involvement in Pakistan, but likewise condemns Islamic fundamentalist groups such as the Taliban, which it considers to be dangerously reactionary. [2]

The party supported in the Occupy movement in Pakistan. [3]

Elections

In 2005, there were 11 SMP members elected to local councils in Pakistan, 8 in Karachi and one each in Dadu, Shikarpur and Dir, winning over 15,000 votes. [4] [5]

SMP is planning on using the upcoming elections to agitate for the need for a new workers party, and are holding a conference of trade unionists on the issue in March, 2008. [6]

Trade Unions

SMP members were in the leadership of the campaign to stop the privatisation of the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) and the party has been a long time supporter of PTCL workers. [7] [8]

SMP also founded the Trade Union Rights Campaign Pakistan (TURCP), which had its founding conference in November 2005, with over 300 trade unions leaders and activists in attendance. [9]

The United Socialist Party is a Trotskyist political party in Sri Lanka. It is affiliated to the Committee for a Workers' International.

The Campaign For A New Workers' Party was an initiative of the Socialist Party of England and Wales that argued for the establishment of a new mass workers' party, involving trade union activists, socialists, anti-capitalists, anti-war and environmental activists. It was launched at the party's annual Socialism event in November 2005. There were more than 4,000 signatories to the campaign's founding declaration, many of whom were trade unionists. Some left parties claimed that the CNWP was a front for the Socialist Party.

Socialist Alternative (United States) American political party

Socialist Alternative (SA) is a Trotskyist political party in the United States. It describes itself as "a national organization fighting in our workplaces, communities, and campuses against the exploitation and injustices people face every day" and "a community of activists fighting against budget cuts in public services; fighting for living wage jobs and militant, democratic unions; and people of all colors speaking out against racism and attacks on immigrants, students organizing against tuition hikes and war, women and men fighting sexism and homophobia".

Revolutionary Left is a Trotskyist political party in Spain former affiliated with the Committee for a Workers' International (CWI). Revolutionary left publishes El Militante in Spanish, Militant in Catalan and Euskal Herria Sozialista. They contain a socialist perspective on news and current issues. It campaigns for a party of the working class to express the political needs of those not benefiting from the capitalist system. They believe a strong and organized movement of workers and young people can overthrow capitalism and establish a new society. This can be achieved by taking banks and big business into public ownership and administering them through democratic control and management.

New Internationalist Left is a Trotskyist political organization in Cyprus affiliated to the Committee for a Workers' International. It is not represented in parliament or other government bodies.

Socialist Alternative (Russia)

Socialist Alternative is a Trotskyist political party in Russia. It is affiliated to the Committee for a Workers' International. The organisation publishes a newspaper of the same name.

Revolutionary Socialism is a Trotskyist political party in Venezuela. It was formerly affiliated to the Committee for a Workers' International. The party publishes the newspaper El Militante.

The Pakistan Socialist Party was a political party in Pakistan. It was formed out of the branches of the Indian Socialist Party in the areas ceded to the new state of Pakistan. The PSP failed to make any political breakthrough in Pakistani politics. Being a secular socialist party, which had strongly opposed the creation of the state Pakistan, the PSP found itself politically isolated and with little mass appeal. The party was labelled as traitors and kafirs by its opponents. The PSP found it difficult to compete with the Islamic socialism that Liaquat Ali Khan professed to in 1949.

The influences of socialism and socialist movements in Pakistan have taken many different forms as a counterpart to political conservatism, from the groups like Lal Salam which is the Pakistani section of the International Marxist Tendency, The Struggle, to the Stalinist group like Communist Party through to the reformist electoral project enshrined in the birth of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)

Socialist Party (England and Wales) Political party in England and Wales

The Socialist Party is a Trotskyist political party in England and Wales which adopted its current name in 1997 after being formerly known as Militant, an entryist group in the Labour Party from 1964 until it abandoned that tactic in 1991. The party stands under the electoral banner of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC).

The Pakistan Trade Union Defence Campaign (PTUDC) is an international solidarity campaign for Pakistani workers.

Trade unions in Pakistan are regulated under provincial industrial relations acts. Under the Constitution of Pakistan, labour is considered a shared responsibility of the federal and provincial governments. The latest Industrial Relation Act was promulgated on 12 March 2012 by President of Pakistan. National Industrial Relations Commission (NIRC) was established under Labour Policy, 1972 as a quasi-judicial authority to promote genuine trade unionism, setting up industry-wise federations of unions and at the national levels. According to NIRC, in 2016 there were 1,390 trade unions with registered 1.4 million members. There are 16 registered federations and the ratio of total union members to total employment is 2.2%.
