South Delhi is an administrative district of the National Capital Territory of Delhi in India with its headquarters in Saket. Administratively, the district is divided into three subdivisions, Saket, Hauz Khas, and Mehrauli.It is bounded by the Yamuna River to the east, the districts of New Delhi to the north, Faridabad District of Haryana state to the southeast, Gurgaon District of Haryana to the southwest, and South West Delhi to the west.
South Delhi has a population of 2,731,929 (2011 census), and an area of 250 square kilometres (97 sq mi), with a population density of 9,034 persons per km² (23,397 persons per mi²).
The South Delhi neighborhood of Hauz Khas is witnessing the growth of trendy shops and lodgings.It is now becoming the center for domestic and international tourists and backpackers. The area also is home to historical monuments and has easy access to the Delhi Metro, making it a preferred location for many visitors to India and domestic middle-class visitors from other Indian states. The area attracts young tourists with numerous hip hostels and cafes.
The division shown on the map bears only administrative significance, as to the common citizen, broadly speaking Delhi is vaguely ring-like, having five regions, namely North, West, South, East and Central. The usage of the term South Delhi in day-to-day life expands from Delhi's IGI Airport in the New Delhi district to the river Yamuna in the South East, a region protruding into administrative South West Delhi district.
According to the 2011 census South Delhi has a population of 2,731,929,[ citation needed ] roughly equal to the nation of Jamaica or the US state of Nevada. This gives it a ranking of 144th in India (out of a total of 640). The district has a population density of 10,935 inhabitants per square kilometre (28,320/sq mi). Its population growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 20.59%.
South Delhi is a vast area in the city of Delhi and contains many significant locations. Of the eleven 'historical cities' of Delhi, four, viz. Rai Pithora (1st), Mehrauli (2nd), Siri (including Hauz Khas) (3rd) and Tughlaqabad (5th) fall in the South Delhi district.
This district has thriving medieval era colonies or sarais, which now are severely congested and under neglect. These include Chirag Delhi, Kalu Sarai, Jia Sarai, Ber Sarai, Lado Sarai, Katwaria Sarai, Yusuf Sarai, Hauz Khas Village, Munirka, Kotla Mubarakpur, Begumpur, Saidulajaib, Mohammadpur, Khirki, Govindpuri, Adhchini, Chhattarpur Village, Badarpur on historic Grand Trunk Road, Aayaa Nagar, Maandi Village, and Dera Village.
Other than history, the region has economic and educational importance too. In Nehru Place, it has Asia's largest computer market and IT market of the city. The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, All India Institute of Medical Sciences and National Institute of Fashion Technology, three of the country's premier institutes in the field of technology, medicine and fashion respectively lie in the Hauz Khas locality of South Delhi. The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade of Delhi is located in the Qutub Institutional Area of South Delhi. Sangam Vihar is also located in South Delhi, which has the highest population in the State. The top Central University Jamia Millia Islamia is situated at Jamia Nagar area of South Delhi.
The administrative district had 20% Green Cover, as of 2009. It has several spacious green parks, wildlife sanctuary, biodiversity parks, and green belts. Deer Park and Rose Garden in Hauz Khas, Asola Wildlife Sanctuary close to Delhi's southern border on the Aravallis foothills are few examples. It has a good mix of concrete and greens.
Many important city roads such as Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Aurobindo Marg, August Kranti Marg, Press Enclave Road, etc. fall in this district, while arterial roads like Inner Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and NH-2 pass through it.
Jahaz Mahal, Zafar Mahal, Tughlaqabad Fort, Hauz Khas Complex, Bijay Mandal, Qutub Minar, Mehrauli Archaeological Park, and the Safdarjung's Tomb comprise some of South Delhi's most scenic heritage sites.
South district is considered to be the most affluent of all residential districts of Delhi, other than the districts falling under Lutyen's Delhi, viz. New Delhi and Central Delhi. With upscale areas like Greater Kailash, South Extension, Jangpura, Kailash East, Saket, Sainik Farm, Chittaranjan Park, Malviya Nagar, Alaknanda, Hauz Khas, Green Park, Rama Krishna Puram , Defence Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Kalkaji, New Friends Colony, Sarita Vihar, Jasola Vihar, Gulmohar Park, Gulmohar enclave, and Vasant Kunj, it has the highest land prices outside Lutyen's Zone in Delhi. Urban villages in South Delhi, like Hauz Khas Village, and Shahpur Jat have become hub for designer boutiques, restaurants and art galleries and design studios.
Many renowned markets of Delhi such as Sarojini Nagar Market, Green Park Market, Lajpat Nagar Market, South Extension, Kotla Mubarakpur, M-block Market, etc. and malls such as Ansal Plaza, DLF, MGF Metropolitan, Select Citywalk, Malviya Nagar, etc. are located in South Delhi.
Delhi has been, since historical times, remained a favoured destination for shoppers. From traditional bazaars to modern-day swanky malls, Delhi has everything to offer to a customer. Delhi's street markets are reported to provide a greater turnover as compared to malls. Since not everyone can afford to shop at malls or branded stores, most residents swear by the street markets. The quality of goods varies from market to market.
Nehru Place is a large commercial, financial, and business centre in Delhi, India.Though its importance as a financial center has declined in recent years, Nehru Place is still a prominent commercial area in South East Delhi and houses the headquarters of several Indian firms and rivals with other financial centers in the metropolis like Connaught Place, Bhikaji Cama Place and Rajendra Place. It is widely considered to be a major information technology hub of South Asia.
South Extension is a neighbourhood of South Delhi, India. Often prefixed with adjectives such as Posh and Tony, the neighbourhood is considered to be one of the wealthier areas in Delhi. It is also known to be the home to some of the wealthiest business families of the city. Situated on the Ring Road, Delhi, just east of All India Institute of Medical Sciences. It is divided into two parts - South Extension I and South Extension II.

Mehrauli is a neighbourhood in South Delhi, a district of Delhi in India. It represents a constituency in the legislative assembly of Delhi. The area is located close to Gurgaon and next to Vasant Kunj. Naresh Yadav of Aam Aadmi Party is the current MLA from Mehrauli.

Saket is an posh residential colony and the administrative headquarters of the South Delhi district of Delhi in India. The neighborhood is named after the city of Ayodhya, also known as Saket, an ancient, religiously significant city in Uttar Pradesh. Saket has four major malls on the Press Enclave Marg.
South Delhi Lok Sabha constituency is one of the seven Lok Sabha constituencies in the Indian National Capital Territory of Delhi. This constituency came into existence in 1966.
Sri Aurobindo Marg or Aurobindo Marg, is an important South Delhi north-south arterial road connecting historic Safdarjung's Tomb to Qutab Minar. The road is named for Sri Aurobindo Ghosh; the Delhi campus of Sri Aurobindo Ashram is located on the road. The road was originally known as Mehrauli Road.
Malviya Nagar is a locality in South Delhi. It is between Saket and Hauz Khas and close to IIT Delhi. It is named after the freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malviya who was also an educator and founded Banaras Hindu University.
Yusuf Sarai is a locality in South Delhi. It lies on the Sri Aurobindo Marg close to AIIMS, New Delhi, and accommodates both residential as well as market places. It is named after historic Yusuf Sarai, one of many sarais which were built in area during and Delhi Sultanate period, including, Katwaria Sarai, Lado Sarai, Sheikh Sarai and Kallu Sarai.
Hauz Khas is an affluent neighborhood in South Delhi, its heart being the historic Hauz Khas Complex. Well known in medieval times, the Hauz Khas village has amazing buildings built around the reservoir. There are remnants of Islamic architecture roughly colored by splotches of urban culture. It is centrally located and offers both rural Hauz Khas Village and urban Hauz Khas Enclave, Market environments. Hauz Khas is surrounded by Green Park, SDA to the west, Gulmohar Park towards the north, Sarvapriya Vihar towards the south and Asiad Village and Siri Fort to the east.
Gulmohar Park is an affluent, upmarket and green neighbourhood in South Delhi.Presently this park is maintained by Delhi Development Authority.This park lies between Hauz Khas and Gautam Nagar and is named after the red-flowered Gulmohar trees growing inside. The nearby residential colony is known as Gulmohar Park Journalists' Colony or simply Gulmohar Park for short, and was established by a group of journalists in the 1970s and is today home to top notch business people, senior lawyers and cine star Amitabh Bachchan's Delhi residence.
Jangpura is a neighbourhood in South East Delhi district of Delhi. Beginning from the east and moving clockwise, it is bordered by the Mathura Road, Ring Railway line, Silver Oak Park beyond the Defence Colony Flyover, and the Barapulla Nullah. It encompasses the residential areas of Jangpura A and B on either side of the Mathura Road, jangpura(Bhogal) extending west from the Mathura Road until Jangpura Extension, which in turn extends along the northern side of the Ring Railway line to the east side of the Defence Colony Flyover on Josip Broz Tito Marg. The small colony of Pant Nagar along the Barapulla Nullah is contiguous with Jangpura Extension.
Badarpur is a historic town in South East Delhi district in Delhi, at a distance of 17 km in south east. Situated close to its edge with Haryana state, Faridabad district, the area is commonly known as "Badarpur Border". Situated on Mathura Road joining Delhi with Mathura, Agra, on NH 2 (Delhi-Kolkata) National Highway, a part of the historic Grand Trunk Road that once joined Bengal to Kabul. It is the starting point for the on the "Mehrauli- Badarpur Road" that passed through Tughlaqabad, Khanpur, Delhi, Saket towards Mehrauli. The Delhi Faridabad Skyway elevated highway also opened at the starting of MB Road. It is serviced by Badarpur station of Delhi Metro on Violet Line.
Sangam Vihar Vidhan Sabha constituency is one of the 70 Vidhan Sabha constituencies of the National Capital Territory in northern India.
Kishangarh is an Urban village of Jaats. The Village is located near Vasant Kunj in South West Delhi district of Delhi, India, on the hills of Aravali, between Mehrauli and Vasant Kunj. One extreme of Kishangarh is around 4 km from Qutub Minar in historic Mehrauli area. The other extreme is approximately 7.5 km from the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Munirka is about 5 km, where the Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, connecting the main Vasant Kunj Marg with the Outer Ring Road forms its western boundary.
The Pink Line is a metro rail line of the Delhi Metro, a rapid transit system in Delhi, India. It is being constructed as part of the Delhi Metro Phase III network development plan. It consists of 38 metro stations from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar, both in North Delhi. In future, the line will be extended to Maujpur-Babarpur,creating one of the world's longest ring lines in the city. The Maujpur-Babarpur to Shiv Vihar route will then act as a branch line.
South East Delhi is an administrative district of the National Capital Territory of Delhi in India.
