Location

The club is located in the parish of Foynes-Shanagolden-Robertstown in west Limerick on the southern banks of the Shannon Estuary. The parish is roughly 40 km west of Limerick City on the N69 road. Neighbouring clubs include Askeaton and Ballysteen to the east, St. Kieran's to the south and Gerald Griffin's to the west.

The Shannon Estuary is a large estuary where the River Shannon flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The estuary has Limerick City at its head and its seaward limits are marked by Loop Head to the north and Kerry Head to the south. The estuary defines the main boundary between County Kerry/County Limerick to the south and County Clare to the north.

N69 road (Ireland) road in Ireland

History

Gaelic games have been played in the parish since the late 1880s. The Smith O'Briens team from Foynes were the first organised team and had great success. In 1916 they beat Templeglantine 1-16 to 1-9 in the West final. The following year they went one better and won the only County Senior Football Championship title that ever came to the parish. They defeated the Commercials 1-5 to 0-4 at the Market's Field and were captained by John O'Connor.

The Limerick Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by the top Limerick GAA clubs. The champions qualify to represent Limerick in the Munster Senior Club Football Championship, the winners of which progress to the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. The 2015 senior football champions are Newcastlewest who defeated Dromcollogher-Broadford on 18 October 2015 by a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-09 to claim their first title in twenty-three years.

During this era hurling was to the fore in the Robertstown and Barrigone areas of the parish. A team called the Liberators won numerous tournaments in the surrounding area. Shanagolden also had a football team called the Shanid Abú's in this era. Records don't give a lot about the period 1910 to 1924. In 1925 Foynes beat Glin 0-9 to 1-4 in the West Junior final and in 1930 Shanagolden won the same competition when they beat Abbeyfeale 1-3 to 0-4. In 1932, Shanagolden lost a final to Ballysteen but beat Foynes in a parish derby a year later by 1-5 to 1-4. This remains the only final contested by two teams from the parish. Foynes reached the County Senior Football final in 1936 but were beaten by the four in a row winning Ahane team of the era.

Glin GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Glin, County Limerick, Ireland. Glin GAA club was founded in 1897 under the name of Glin Emmetts, in commemoration of Robert Emmett who played a major role in the 1798 rebellion just over a century earlier. Notable rivals include Fr. Caseys, Newcastle West and as of 2009, Mountcollins.

Ballysteen GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Ballysteen, Limerick, Ireland. The club participates in competitions organized by Limerick GAA county board.

Ahane GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the Ahane, Castleconnell and Montpelier areas of east County Limerick, Republic of Ireland. The club fields teams in both hurling and football and historically is regarded as one of the great clubs of Limerick. Some other class players were the Mackey brothers, Mick and John and Jackie Power among others. In their day, they defeated all-comers in Limerick and in the adjoining counties of Tipperary and Cork whose clubs they successfully challenged in many church tournaments during their greatest period of domination. A few of the Ahane players won the All-Ireland Senior hurling championship in 1934, 1936 and 1940 with Limerick, their leader being the peerless Mick Mackey, regarded as one of Ireland's greatest hurlers of all time. They won 15 Limerick Senior Hurling Championships in the 1930s and 1940s and also won 5 Limerick Senior Football Championships during this era. Their fans can often be heard to use the famous cheer "Come on Ahane the spuds are boiling"

After Foynes's defeat to Mountcollins in the 1939 West junior final, a lean period hit the parish with no success coming from either Foynes or Shanagolden. The two clubs decided to merge in 1947 and the present-day club of St. Senan's was formed. The first chairman was John 'Cinders' Mulvihill, the first secretary John 'The Boxer' Kenneally and the first treasurer Jimmy Finucane. The newly founded club had great success winning four West Under 16 Championships in a row from 1950–53 and a County Minor Football Championship in 1954 captained by Dónal Mullane.

In 1953 came the breakthrough of winning a first adult county title when Pallasgreen were defeated by 0-6 to 0-4 in the County Junior Football Championship final. The team was captained by Bernie 'The Bowen' Madigan who played for Limerick at the time. Also in 1953, six Senan's men won a County Senior Football Championship with Western Gaels, an amalgamation of Rathkeale, Ballyhahill, Kilcolman and Senan's. West Minor titles were won in 1966 and 1967 but the County finals of the same years were both lost to Old Christians.

Pallasgreen GAA club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Pallasgreen/Templebraden parish in east County Limerick, Ireland. The club was founded in 1887 and is a dual club fielding teams in both hurling and Gaelic football.

Limerick GAA

The Limerick County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) or Limerick GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Limerick. The county board is also responsible for the Limerick inter-county teams.

Old Christians GAA was formed in Limerick, Ireland in 1962 for the development of the games of Hurling and Gaelic Football in the southern part of the city. Since then the club has gone on to develop many league and championship winning teams at all level and has contributed to the county with many noteworthy players including Bernie Hartigan who won an All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship with Limerick in 1973. Ger Hegarty also won a Munster title and a National Hurling League medal in the mid-1990s.

A second County Junior title was won in 1973 when the Saints beat Na Piarsaigh 1-10 to 1-7 captained by Joe Behan. A West Junior title was won in 1981 and a County title followed in 1986 as Senan's beat Kilteely-Dromkeen captained by Dónal Mulvihill. Promising underage teams in the 1990s led to a second County Premier Minor Football title in 1997 captained by Mike Flaherty. West Under-21 titles followed and in 2003 they were crowned County Intermediate Football champions after beating Pallasgreen after a replay.

Na Piarsaigh GAA (Limerick) gaelic games club in County Limerick, Ireland

Na Piarsaigh[nˠə ˈpʲiəɾˠsˠiː] is a Gaelic Athletic Association club situated on the north side of Limerick City, Ireland. It was founded in 1968. Following their 1-15 to 3-11 victory in the 2014 Limerick Intermediate Football Championship over St Senan's, Na Piarsaigh are one of three dual senior club in hurling and Gaelic football in Limerick. The club currently field five adult teams three in hurling and two in football, the most of any club in Limerick. In 2011, Na Piarsaigh won their first ever Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship. In November 2015, Na Piarsaigh won their third Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship after a 2-18 to 2-11 win against Ballygunner in the final. On St Patrick's Day, 2016 Na Piarsaigh won their first ever All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship beating Ruairí Óg, Cushendall 2-25 to 2-14 in Croke Park, becoming the first ever Limerick club to do so. In November 2016 Na Piarsaigh won the Limerick Junior 'A' County Hurling Championship beating fellow city club St Patrick's 1-16 to 1-12, earning promotion to the Limerick Intermediate Hurling Championship for 2017 and becoming the only club in Limerick to field teams in both the Senior & Intermediate County Hurling Championships.

The club went on to contest its first ever County Senior Football final in 2006 but were beaten by Fr. Casey's on a scoreline of 0-12 to 1-7. After nine years at senior level, Senan's were relegated to intermediate in 2012 and lost an Intermediate County final in 2014 to Na Piarsaigh.
