St. Joseph's College (Autonomous), Bangalore is one of the oldest colleges in the state of Karnataka with a history of more than 136 years. It has been conferred as College of Excellence by the University Grants Commission (India). The college is awarded a rating of A++ (3.79/4), in the 4th cycle of re-accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2017. It imparts graduate, post-graduate and research education. St. Joseph's College has around 300 teaching and non-teaching staff and more than 5500 students. St. Joseph's was set up in the year 1882 because of the salubrious climate[ citation needed ] and strategic position of Bangalore, and the need to provide education for the small Catholic community comprising about 1000 Europeans and 5000 Indians. In 1904 the Indian section was separated from the European section.

In 1926 the University of Madras granted the Institution the status of a First Grade College. On 1 June 1937, the management of the College was transferred to the Society of Jesus. From 1882 to 1937 the college was under the French foreign missionaries. [1] At the time the college consisted of one building, constructed in 1925, accommodating 350 students. In 1967 the College was granted permanent affiliation to Bangalore University. 1972 saw the commerce sections and evening college separated from the main college. It was the first affiliated college in Karnataka to offer postgraduate courses in Botany and Chemistry and set up a research centre. The college is one of the early ones to go for NAAC accreditation in 1998 and got a four-star (70–75%).In 2001 the College moved from the Residency Road campus to new premises in the erstwhile Hostel Campus at the intersection of Langford Road and Lalbagh Road. The pre-university section was separated from the college in 2002 as part of the Karnataka state policy of bifurcation. It was Accredited by UGC as a College with Potential for Excellence‘ (CPE) on 3 November 2004 and was one of five colleges in Karnataka that was awarded academic autonomy in the year 2005. The second cycle of NAAC Accreditation conferred A‘ level (Score 85.3%) on 2 February 2006. A commemorative stamp by India Post was released on 1 August 2009. The UGC extended the College's Autonomous Status for the period 2010–2011 to 2015–2016. Yet again the college saw an improvement in its NAAC Accreditation score in the third Cycle with 'A' level and a score of 3.73/4 on 10 March 2012. The college was granted College for Excellence‘(CE) status by the UGC in 2014. It was granted the status of DST-FIST College. The UGC once again extended the Autonomous Status for the period 2016–2022.

In 2014 the College was cited for its model library facility. [2]

The annual Literature festival organised by the Department of English of St. Joseph`s College, Bangalore is open to all college students and the general public. Consisting of a plethora of contests, events, talks, panels and performances, META has been a platform to showcase new talents in the college and the city. It began in 2014 and has already seen five editions.

St Joseph's Evening College, Bangalore was established in 1972 as a Jesuit college to empower the underprivileged sectors of Indian society [10] In 2005, it was given autonomous status by the UGC, to devise its own curriculum. [11]

The Evening College is a minority institution and accepts students of all religious denominations without discrimination. It is affiliated to Bangalore University and offers three-year BCom, BA, BCA, and BBM degrees and two-year postgraduate degrees in Commerce (MCom), Management (MBA Twinning Programme), and English. [12] [13]

In 2007 Joseph's won the top prize at Agno-Fest competition among 13 colleges, in commerce, science, and arts competitions. [14] In 2014 a post-graduate course in commerce (MCom) introduced. [15]

The college also organizes seminars for the public; a seminar on climate change in 2011 attracted more than 400 persons. [16] Furthermore, it fields sports teams, including a successful boys' hockey team. [17]

The University of Mysore is a public state university in Mysore, Karnataka, India. The university was founded during the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore. It opened on 27 July 1916. Its first chancellor was the Maharaja of Mysore; the first Vice-Chancellor was H. V. Nanjundaiah. The university became the first outside the British administration in India, the sixth in India as a whole, and the first in Karnataka. It is a state university of the affiliating type, and became autonomous on 3 March 1956, when it gained recognition from the University Grants Commission.

St. Alberts College college

St. Albert's College (Autonomous) located at Kochi, India, started in 1946 is an accredited first grade Arts, Science and Commerce College affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, India with autonomous status conferred by University Grants Commission (UGC), India. It has eighteen degree courses, twelve postgraduate courses and five research centres. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited the College at the A level with an aggregate score of 3.24. College had completed 3cycles of NAAC accreditation and in last two NAAC accreditation College is accredited at 'A' Grade. The college was founded by late Dr. Joseph Attippetty, the first Indian Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Verapoly. St. Albert's College has been granted autonomous status in 2016 by the NAAC.

Midnapore College

Midnapore College, established in 1873, is the oldest college in Midnapore, in the Paschim Medinipur district. It offers undergraduate courses in arts and sciences. It is affiliated to Vidyasagar University. It has been given Autonomous status by University Grants Commission from 2014-2015 Session. It is only the fourth aided college to be granted the tag after St Xavier's College, Ramkrishna Mission Narendrapur and RKM Belur.

Patkai Christian College

Patkai Christian College is a college of higher education in Chümoukedima of Dimapur district, and is rated highest by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in the state of Nagaland, out of 11 colleges recognised by the University Grants Commission of India. It is rated with A grade for three consecutive assessments by NAAC and also with a status of CPE. The NAAC team re-accredited the institution in March 2010, giving it the A grade with a CGPA of 3.06. In 2016, it is re-accredited with CGPA 3.26. Patkai Christian College was established in 1974 as a liberal Arts College.
