State Correctional Institution – Laurel Highlands is a Minimum-Security facility located on State Route 31, about three miles east of the Somerset Interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. SCI-Laurel Highlands houses Minimum-Security Inmates, particularly older males and geriatric/mentally ill males.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is a toll highway operated by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. A controlled-access highway, it runs for 360 miles (580 km) across the state. The turnpike begins at the Ohio state line in Lawrence County, where the road continues west into Ohio as the Ohio Turnpike. It ends at the New Jersey border at the Delaware River–Turnpike Toll Bridge over the Delaware River in Bucks County, where the road continues east as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike.



SCI - Laurel Highlands is on the campus of the former Somerset State Hospital, which closed in mid-1995. [1] The facility was then converted into its current facility and opened in 1996. [2]

Somerset State Hospital was a Pennsylvania State Mental Health Hospital, located outside Somerset, about 70 miles east of Pittsburgh. The hospital, closed in 1995, was converted into a minimum-security correctional facility housing older males with geriatric/mentally challenging issues.

Ira Einhorn American murderer and fugitive from justice

Ira Samuel Einhorn, known as "The Unicorn Killer", is an American convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Holly Maddux. On September 9, 1977, Maddux disappeared following a trip to collect her belongings from the apartment she and Einhorn had shared in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eighteen months later, police found her partially mummified body in a trunk in Einhorn's closet.

Pennsylvania Department of Corrections

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PADOC) is the Pennsylvania state agency that is responsible for the confinement, care and rehabilitation of approximately 47,000 inmates at state correctional facilities funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The agency has its headquarters in Hampden Township, Cumberland County in Greater Harrisburg, near Mechanicsburg. In October 2017, Gov. Tom Wolf signed a "memorandum of understanding" that allows the PADOC and the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole to share like resources and eliminate duplicative efforts. All parole supervision now falls under the jurisdiction of the PADOC; while parole release decisions remain under the jurisdiction of the PA Board of Probation and Parole. The two agencies remain separate.

State Correctional Institution – Somerset is a Medium-Security, all male correctional facility located outside Somerset, Pennsylvania, about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, and about five miles off the Somerset Interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

State Correctional Institution – Cresson

State Correctional Institution – Cresson was a medium-security, all male correctional facility, located off U.S. Route 22, about 10 miles west of Altoona along Old Route 22 in the Western part of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. On April 17, 2012 a SCI-Pine Grove van crashed near Hollidaysburg, PA while carrying 10 inmates and 2 correctional officers. No inmates escaped and several were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

The Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI) is a medium-security state prison for men located in Westover, Somerset County, Maryland, owned and operated by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. Eastern has a minimum-security Annex, completed in 1993, and housing some 560 inmates. The total capacity of the minimum- and medium-security sections is around 3,400. With an actual population of about 3,300, this is Maryland's largest prison.
