State Correctional Institution – Laurel Highlands is a Minimum-Security facility located on State Route 31, about three miles east of the Somerset Interchange of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. SCI-Laurel Highlands houses Minimum-Security Inmates, particularly older males and geriatric/mentally ill males.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike is a toll highway operated by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. A controlled-access highway, it runs for 360 miles (580 km) across the state. The turnpike begins at the Ohio state line in Lawrence County, where the road continues west into Ohio as the Ohio Turnpike. It ends at the New Jersey border at the Delaware River–Turnpike Toll Bridge over the Delaware River in Bucks County, where the road continues east as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike.
SCI - Laurel Highlands is on the campus of the former Somerset State Hospital, which closed in mid-1995.The facility was then converted into its current facility and opened in 1996.

Ira Samuel Einhorn, known as "The Unicorn Killer", is an American convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Holly Maddux. On September 9, 1977, Maddux disappeared following a trip to collect her belongings from the apartment she and Einhorn had shared in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eighteen months later, police found her partially mummified body in a trunk in Einhorn's closet.

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (PADOC) is the Pennsylvania state agency that is responsible for the confinement, care and rehabilitation of approximately 47,000 inmates at state correctional facilities funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The agency has its headquarters in Hampden Township, Cumberland County in Greater Harrisburg, near Mechanicsburg. In October 2017, Gov. Tom Wolf signed a "memorandum of understanding" that allows the PADOC and the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole to share like resources and eliminate duplicative efforts. All parole supervision now falls under the jurisdiction of the PADOC; while parole release decisions remain under the jurisdiction of the PA Board of Probation and Parole. The two agencies remain separate.

The facility is located directly off of U.S. Route 119 in Hempfield Township, about five miles South of downtown Greensburg. The institution is located about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh, in the western part of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

State Correctional Institution – Cresson was a medium-security, all male correctional facility, located off U.S. Route 22, about 10 miles west of Altoona along Old Route 22 in the Western part of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. On April 17, 2012 a SCI-Pine Grove van crashed near Hollidaysburg, PA while carrying 10 inmates and 2 correctional officers. No inmates escaped and several were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
State Correctional Institution – Huntingdon is a close-security correctional facility, located near Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, in the Allegheny Mountains. SCI Huntingdon was, until the reopening of SCI-Pittsburgh, the oldest-operating state correctional facility in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
State Correctional Institution – Waymart is a medium-security correctional facility located outside Waymart, Pennsylvania in the extreme northeast corner of the commonmwealth. SCI Waymart also houses a unit for mentally disabled males needing psychiatric care and treatment. The facility is located on the site of the former Farview State Hospital.
State Correctional Institution – Retreat is a 350-bed Medium-Security correctional facility for males. Located on the site of the former Retreat State Hospital, the facility is located about 12 miles south of Wilkes-Barre in the northeastern part of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
State Correctional Institution – Mahanoy is a 1,000 cell, all male, Medium-Security, correctional facility located along Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
State Correctional Institution – Frackville is a maximum-security correctional facility for males off Interstate 81 in Ryan Township in rural Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, on the outskirts of Frackville and about 40 miles northwest of Reading.
State Correctional Institution – Forest is one of two identical correctional facilities in Pennsylvania that were constructed in the beginning of the twenty-first century to hold maximum-security male inmates. SCI Forest is located in the community of Marienville, in remote Forest County.

Eastern has a minimum-security Annex, completed in 1993, and housing some 560 inmates. The total capacity of the minimum- and medium-security sections is around 3,400. With an actual population of about 3,300, this is Maryland's largest prison.
