State rural development councils

State rural development councils in the United States are a collaborative partnership with representatives of the federal, state, local, and tribal governments, the private sector, and the nonprofit sector. Councils are created by a memorandum of understanding between USDA and the state Governor. The councils’ purpose is to promote rural development within the state.

The principal component of the Partnership is the State Rural Development Councils. The Partnership was authorized by the 2002 farm bill as an amendment of the Consolidated Agriculture and Rural Development Act of 1972. The law authorizes appropriations of $10 million per fiscal year 2002-2006 for the Partnership.
