Stethomyia is a subgenus of the mosquito genus Anopheles . [1] The type species is Anopheles nimbus . There are five species in this subgenus.

History

This genus was created by Frederick Wallace Edwards in 1932.

Phylogeny

Of the seven extant subgenera of Anopheles, Stethomyia appears to be the earliest diverging clade.

This branching order is currently under examination and may be revised.

Distribution

This subgenus is found in the Caribbean and both Central and South America.

Countries where species of this subgenus are found include: Bolivia, Brazil, [2] Costa Rica, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela.

The species in this subgenus are forest mosquitoes and to date have been poorly studied. Larvae and pupal forms have been found in shaded marshy and swampy areas along streams within forests. Adult females are known to feed on humans.

Pupae do not seem to bear subgeneric characters.

Adults:

These species are all dark mosquitoes and lack pale scaling on the maxillary palpi, wings or legs found in other species.

They have a median longitudinal silvery stripe on the scutum and lack prealar setae.

Male genitalia gonocoxites have an internal seta and a single long parabasal seta that is not borne on a tubercle.

Medical importance

None of the species in this genus transmit malaria.

Anopheles albimanus is a species of mosquito in the order Diptera. It is found in coastal Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico. It is a generalist species and capable of wide dispersion. A. albimanus is a common malaria vector.

Dipteran morphology differs in some significant ways from the broader morphology of insects. The Diptera is a very large and diverse order of mostly small to medium-sized insects. They have prominent compound eyes on a mobile head, and one pair of functional, membraneous wings, which are attached to a complex mesothorax. The second pair of wings, on the metathorax, are reduced to halteres. The order's fundamental peculiarity is its remarkable specialization in terms of wing shape and the morpho-anatomical adaptation of the thorax – features which lend particular agility to its flying forms. The filiform, stylate or aristate antennae correlate with the Nematocera, Brachycera and Cyclorrhapha taxa respectively. It displays substantial morphological uniformity in lower taxa, especially at the level of genus or species. Lutzia is a genus of mosquitos. First described in 1903 by Frederick Vincent Theobald, it includes species whose larval stages exhibit predatory behavior. The type species is Lutzia bigoti.

Armigeres (Armigeres) aureolineatus is a species complex of zoophilic mosquito belonging to the genus Armigeres. It is found in Sri Lanka, India, Malaya, Cambodia, Laos, Nepal, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Indochina, China, and Borneo. Many species of flies of the two-winged type, Order Diptera, such as mosquitoes, horse-flies, blow-flies and warble-flies, cause direct parasitic disease to domestic animals, and transmit organisms that cause diseases. These infestations and infections cause distress to companion animals, and in livestock industry the financial costs of these diseases are high. These problems occur wherever domestic animals are reared. <i>Anopheles freeborni</i> Species of fly

Anopheles freeborni, commonly known as the western malaria mosquito, is a species of mosquito in the family Culicidae. It is typically found in the western United States and Canada. Adults are brown to black, with yellow-brown hairs and gray-brown stripes on the thorax. Their scaly wings have four dark spots, which are less distinct in the male.

<i>Bezzia nobilis</i> Species of fly

Bezzia nobilis is a species of biting midges in the family Ceratopogonidae. It is widely considered one of the most common Bezzia species; it is found in Eurasian regions, all over the United States, Central America, and even into South American countries like Brazil. B. nobilis seem to prefer aquatic environments; they are commonly observed in stagnant water pools in Eurasia regions and marshes in the southern United States. Adults of this species are easily distinguished by their black and yellow striped legs. Pupae are recognized by their brown bodies, abdominal spines, and respiratory horns. Anopheles nuneztovari is a species of mosquito in the order Diptera native to South America. The species was named by its discoverer, Arnoldo Gabaldón, to honor the Venezuelan entomologist Manuel Núñez Tovar.
