TSS Chelmsford was a passenger vessel built for the Great Eastern Railway in 1893. [2]

History

She was built by Earle's in Hull for the Great Eastern Railway. She was launched on 21 February 1893 and launched by the Mayoress of Chelmsford. She was intended for the new route from Harwich to the Hook of Holland. She was described as

having an awning deck extending almost the entire length of the ship and a complete lower deck all fore and aft. The first class dining saloon is forward of the boilers on the main deck, and extends from side to side. It is 32ft long, and is entered through a spacious lobby formed in the large deck-house on the awning deck, the illumination being mainly got by means of a handsome painted glass dome. The remainder of this house is occupied by state rooms, the captain’s room, and a large ventilating truck for affording light and air to the dining room below. Forward of the saloon is a cabin and state-rooms specially arranged for ladies, and abaft the saloon on each side of the engines and boilers are other state-rooms, pantries, bar, lavatories, and officer’s accommodation. Abaft the engines and boilers on this deck are also further state rooms for first-class passengers with a separate entrance lobby from a deck-house in which is a spacious smoke-room. [1]

In 1910 she was purchased by the Great Western Railway for the route from Plymouth to Brest and renamed Bretonne. [3] She was sold in the following year to the National Steam Navigation Company of Greece when she was renamed Esperia. For a short time in the early 1920s she was renamed Syros, but was renamed Esperia again until she was scrapped in 1934.

After the original owners went bankrupt in 1939 Seeandbee was purchased by Chicago-based C & B Transit Company and continued operating until 1941.

The company was famous for its distinctive paddle steamers, which were a familiar sight on the river until the late 1960s.

PS <i>Commonwealth</i> (1854)

Commonwealth was a large sidewheel steamboat built in 1854–55 for passenger service on Long Island Sound. The most celebrated Sound steamer of her day, Commonwealth was especially noted for the elegance and comfort of her passenger accommodations, which included gas lighting, steam heating, and an "enchantingly beautiful" domed roof in her upper saloon. SS <i>Monas Queen</i> (1934)

TSS (RMS) Mona's Queen (III) No. 145308, was a ship built for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company in 1934. The steamer, which was the third vessel in the company's history to bear the name, was one of five ships to be specially commissioned by the company between 1927 and 1937. They were replacements for the various second-hand steamers that had been purchased to replace the company's losses during the First World War. However, the life of the Mona's Queen proved to be short: six years after being launched she was sunk by a sea mine during the Dunkirk evacuation on 29 May 1940.

SS Empress Queen was a steel-hulled paddle steamer, the last of her type ordered by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company. The Admiralty chartered her in 1915 as a troop ship a role in which she saw service until she ran aground off Bembridge, Isle of Wight, England in 1916 and was subsequently abandoned.

SS <i>Okanagan</i>

SS Okanagan was a steamship owned and operated by the Canadian Pacific Railway Lake and River Service. The vessel was constructed in 1906 at Okanagan Landing and launched in 1907, becoming Okanagan Lake's second steamship. She linked the transportation hubs at both the north and south ends of Okanagan Lake (Vernon and Penticton, respectively, aiding the development of interior British Columbia with other steamships of the 1900s. The ship was retired in 1934 and sold for scrap and spare parts. Only the Stern Saloon, a room in the back of the upper deck, remains. It was moved to the SS Sicamous Heritage Park in Penticton in 2002, to undergo restoration work.

It was the first CPR steamship on Okanagan Lake and carried passengers and cargo from Okanagan Landing to Penticton from 1893 to 1919. Aberdeen connected communities along Okanagan Lake for the first time, creating a new era in the Okanagan Valley and greatly aiding the economy and settlement of the interior of British Columbia.

Victoria was a steam ship built in 1902 by the Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Company of Govan. She was employed by the Pacific Steam Navigation Company on their routes along the West coast of South America, from Valparaiso to Callao.

SS <i>City of Lowell</i>

City of Lowell was a twin screw passenger steamer launched on 21 November 1893 by Bath Iron Works and delivered in July 1894 for the Norwich & New York Transportation Company for use on Long Island Sound. The Norwich Line, operated by the New York and New England Railroad, placed the steamer on the overnight service between New York and New London, Connecticut. Passengers connected by rail at New London for Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts. The ship was in commercial operation until 1939 when apparently laid up awaiting scrapping. At the outbreak of World War II City of Lowell was acquired by the War Shipping Administration with eventual transfer of title to the War Department for use as an Army troop transport. The ship was sold to Potomac Shipwrecking Company of Washington, D.C. in November 1946 for scrapping.

TSS Ipswich was a passenger vessel built for the Great Eastern Railway in 1883.

<i>Nasookin</i> Canadian steamboat

Nasookin was a sternwheel-driven steamboat that operated on Kootenay Lake in British Columbia from 1913 to 1947. Nasookin was one of the largest inland steam vessels ever to operate in British Columbia and the Columbia River and its tributaries. Nasookin became surplus to its original owner, the Canadian Pacific Railway, and was transferred to the British Columbia Provincial government which used it as an auto ferry until 1947. Negligent mooring of the steamer in 1948 led to irreparable damage to its hull, and it was later scrapped. Portions of the upper works were salvaged and used as a house.

PS <i>Lucy Ashton</i> Clyde-built paddle steamer (1888 - 1951)

PS Lucy Ashton was a Clyde-built paddle steamer that carried passengers on the Clyde between 1888 and 1949. She was one of the longest serving Clyde steamers.
