Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam (born 5 November 1988) is an Indian film director, writer, actor, and television presenter who works in Telugu Film Industry. He directed the critically acclaimed romantic comedy film Pelli Choopulu (2016), which won him the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu and Best Screenplay – Dialogues. [2] He later directed Ee Nagaraniki Emaindhi (2018), and made his debut in a lead role with Meeku Maathrame Cheptha (2019).

Early life

Tharun Bhascker was born on 5 November 1988 in Madras and was raised in Hyderabad. [3] [4] His father hailed from Warangal, Telangana, while his mother is from Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. [1] Bhasckar studied at Hyderabad Public School, and Swami Vivekananda Institute of Technology. [5] [6] He later graduated from New York Film Academy. [7]

His father, Uday Bhaskar, died in 2015. [8] His mother, Geetha Bhaskar, made her acting debut in Sekhar Kammula's Fidaa (2017). [9]

Film career

Bhascker started his career with short films such as Anukokunda, and Sainma. Anukokunda was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. [10]

His first full length feature film was Pelli Choopulu (2016). [11] [12] The film received National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu, and Bhasckar won Best Screenplay for Dialogues. The film was remade in Hindi as Mitron (2018), in Malayalam as Vijay Superum Pournamiyum (2019), and in Tamil as Oh Manapenne .

In 2018, Bhasckar played the role of Singeetham Srinivasa Rao in the biopic, Mahanati . His second directorial is the buddy comedy film Ee Nagaraniki Emaindhi (2018). Later in the year, he wrote the screenplay for the Zee5 web series, B. Tech. [13]

In 2019, Bhaskar made his debut in a lead role with Meeku Maathrame Cheptha . [14]

Keedaa Cola, directed by Tharun Bhascker, was released on November 3, 2023. [15]

Personal life

Bhasckar is married to Latha Naidu. She is a production and costume designer for films and advertisements. She worked for films such as Pelli Choopulu , Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi and U Turn . [16]

Partly based on a real-life incident of "Spitfire BBQ" food truck, the film revolves around a boy and a girl who meet during match-making and how their aspirations bring them together forms the rest of the story.

Pitta Kathalu is a 2021 Indian Telugu-language anthology drama film consisting of four short film segments, directed by Nag Ashwin, B. V. Nandini Reddy, Tharun Bhascker and Sankalp Reddy. The film features an ensemble cast of Amala Paul, Ashwin Kakumanu, Eesha Rebba, Jagapati Babu, Satyadev, Lakshmi Manchu, Ashima Narwal, Saanve Megghana, Sanjith Hegde and Shruti Haasan, amongst others. The film was produced by RSVP Movies and Flying Unicorn Entertainment. The film premiered on Netflix on 19 February 2021. It is Netflix's first Telugu original film.

SIIMA Award for Best Debut Director – Telugu is presented by Vibri media group as part of its annual South Indian International Movie Awards, for best film direction done by an debut director in Telugu films. The award was first given in 2012 for films released in 2011.

Keedaa Cola is a 2023 Indian Telugu-language crime-comedy film, written and directed by Tharun Bhascker. It stars Chaitanya Rao Madadi, Rag Mayur, Brahmanandam, Tharun Bhascker, Jeevan Kumar, Vishnu Oi, Ravindra Vijay and Raghu Ram in the main roles. The music is composed by Vivek Sagar.
