The Dream is Dead was a hardcore punk band based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Their music contained many American political anti-authoritarian themes.

Hardcore punk Subgenre of punk rock

Hardcore punk is a punk rock music genre and subculture that originated in the late 1970s. It is generally faster, harder, and more aggressive than other forms of punk rock. Its roots can be traced to earlier punk scenes in San Francisco and Southern California which arose as a reaction against the still predominant hippie cultural climate of the time. It was also inspired by New York punk rock and early proto-punk. New York punk had a harder-edged sound than its San Francisco counterpart, featuring anti-art expressions of masculine anger, energy, and subversive humor. Hardcore punk generally disavows commercialism, the established music industry and "anything similar to the characteristics of mainstream rock" and often addresses social and political topics with "confrontational, politically-charged lyrics."

Band history

The concept behind The Dream Is Dead began in 2000 when Clark Giles (founder of Happy Couples Never Last Records) and long-time friend Jason McCash (bass player for the seminal Circle City hardcore band Burn It Down) kicked around the idea of doing a project band dedicated to putting the threat and politics back into hardcore. A feeling of youthful rebellion and resistance to the status quo initially drew them to hardcore punk in their teenage years, and it was the integrity of the music that sustained their love for the genre.

Happy Couples Never Last was an American independent record label founded in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1998 by Clark Giles.

Burn It Down was a metalcore band from Indianapolis, Indiana, United States, whose full-length album, Let the Dead Bury the Dead, was released in 2000 on Escape Artist Records. Produced by Ed Rose, the album garnered a 4 "K" review in Kerrang! and a 4/5 in Alternative Press. It followed two EPs and a split CD with Racetraitor. Burn It Down toured with Shadows Fall, In Flames, Dillinger Escape Plan and Zao before disbanding. They played their final show at the 2001 Hellfest and played a reunion show in 2005.

Initial attempts to get the band off the ground failed but the breakup of Burn It Down left McCash without a band and revitalized The Dream Is Dead's prospects. Jared Southwick (from Indiana death metal band Harakiri) was recruited for guitar duties, eventually parting from his former band to devote his time fully to The Dream is Dead. Alex Bond, fresh from the breakup of his screamo band The Sutek Conspiracy, completed the lineup on drums in September 2001.

Alex Bond left the band late in the Spring of 2002 and was replaced by local drummer Dustin Boltjes. By August, Boltjes was acclimated, and the band resumed a heavy regimen of touring.

The toll of being on the road and family responsibilities led founding member McCash to bow out in the fall of 2003. Beaten but not broken, the band resurfaced in early 2004 with former Ice Nine guitarist Dave Lawson on bass.

The bulk of 2004 was spent writing the band's first full length, once again for Escape Artist. A short tour with fellow hoosiers Phoenix Bodies in late 2004 allowed them to polish the new material. In the meantime, in-demand Los Angeles producer and current Theory of Ruin guitarist Alex Newport (formerly of Fudge Tunnel and Nailbomb) was recruited to handle recording and production duties for the full-length. Having recorded several current indie staples for the likes of the Melvins, the Locust, Mars Volta, and others, the band and the label felt he was the man for the job.

A short tour brought The Dream Is Dead to the west coast in March 2005, where they recorded their full-length debut, Hail The New Pawn . In June 2007, the band announced it would be releasing a split 7" on Relapse Records with The Gates of Slumber in anticipation of their second full-length.

On Thursday, June 23, 2011, band member and guitarist Jared Southwick, 34, died at a Muncie, Indiana hospital from complications from a hepatic and renal condition he had been hospitalized for earlier that month; he suffered complications of the illness and his condition deteriorated. [1]

None More Black is a New Jersey-based punk rock outfit on Fat Wreck Chords, formed by lead singer / guitarist Jason Shevchuk after the demise of his previous band, Philadelphia's Kid Dynamite. Jason left Kid Dynamite so that he could finish film school, and "to sort some things out." While at school, Jason had written some songs and would play them with his roommate Dan Gross and a drum machine. By 2000, they had a second guitarist and a real drummer. That lineup soon fell apart, but by 2001 Jason and Dan had recruited Jason's brother Jeff, along with a new drummer. After recording a 7" for Sub Division Records, that lineup fell apart, this time leaving only Jeff and Jason. In 2002 a solid lineup was established, featuring Paul from Kill Your Idols on bass. A demo was recorded, circulated, and the band went on to release their first full length on Fat Wreck Chords.

Minsk is an extreme metal band from Peoria, Illinois founded in 2002. Self-described as "psychedelic metal", their songs tend to start out as slow and simple, and become heavy and complex towards the end. Their sound draws from doom metal, hardcore punk, ambient and noise music, with a highly psychedelic attitude achieved through tribal drum patterns, thick layers of synthesizers and keyboards, and echoing vocals. They are named after the capital of Belarus. The idea of survival through suffering is a recurring theme in the lyrics and musical style. In fact, regarding the origin of their name, their official biography states: "Drawing its nominal inspiration from a remote Belarusian city nestled deep amidst the in-betweens of the East and the West, a city that has been burned to the ground on several occasions only to be rebuilt like a Phoenix rising from its ashes." The sounds and atmospheres they evoke in their songs are complex and psychedelic.

The Relapse Symphony was an American rock band from Washington, DC. As of 2016, lead vocalist Bret Von Dehl expressed that the band has parted ways on good terms.

Leon del Muerte is a musician living in Portland, Oregon. He is a founding member, guitarist and vocalist of the band Murder Construct, guitarist in Terrorizer LA, guitarist in Nails, vocalist in Impaled, and was previously involved with the bands Exhumed, Nausea LA, Intronaut, Phobia, and Artificium Sanguis.
