Thoothukudi City Municipal Corporation is a civic body that governs Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India. Also known as The City Municipal Corporation of Thoothukudi, it is a port situated in the Gulf of Mannar about 125 km north of Cape Comorin.It consists of a legislative and an executive body. The legislative body is headed by the mayor while the executive body is headed by a Commissioner.

Thoothukudi is a port city and a municipal corporation and an industrial city in Thoothukudi district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city lies in the Coromandel Coast of Bay of Bengal. Thoothukudi is the headquarters of Thoothukudi district. It is located about 590 kilometres south of Chennai and 190 kilometres northeast of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). According to Confederation of Indian Industry, Thoothukudi has the second highest Human Development Index in Tamil Nadu next to Chennai. Thoothukudi City serves as the headquarters of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Limited. Major educational establishments in the city include Thoothukudi Medical College, Fisheries College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Maritime Academy, V.O.C. Arts & Science College, Government Polytechnic College,, Anna University Thoothukudi Campus. and Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering, Tiruchendur. V. O. Chidambaranar Port Trust is one of the fastest growing Major Ports in India. Thoothukudi is an "Emerging Energy and Industrial hub of South India".

History

Thoothukudi was established as a Municipality on 1 November 1866 as per the Town Improvements Act of 1865 [1] with Roche Victoria as its first chairman. It attained the status of Municipal Corporation on 5 August 2008. It was upgraded to a municipal corporation in 2008 along with Erode, Tiruppur and Vellore.

A municipal corporation is the legal term for a local governing body, including cities, counties, towns, townships, charter townships, villages, and boroughs. The term can also be used to describe municipally owned corporations.

Structure

Thoothukudi Corporation is divided into 60 wards after its expansion in the year 2011. For administrative purpose the Thoothukudi Corporation is divided into four zones (i.e.) East, West, North and South zone. East zone has ward number 14-16 and 19-33 wards, West zone has ward number 34-47 wards, North has ward number 1-13 and 17,18 wards and South zone has ward number 48-60 wards. This corporation consist of 60 wards and is headed by a mayor who presides over a Deputy Mayor and 58 councillors who represent each wards in the city.

Local government in Bangladesh

There are 8 divisions and 64 districts in Bangladesh, each district further subdivided into upazila. The area within each subdistrict, except for those in metropolitan areas, is divided into several unions, with each union consisting of multiple villages.
