Cantopop music genre

Cantopop or HK-pop is a genre of popular music written in standard modern Chinese but sung in Cantonese. Cantopop is also used to refer to the cultural context of its production and consumption. The genre began in the 1970s and became associated with Hong Kong popular music from the middle of the decade. Cantopop then reached its height of popularity in the 1980s and 1990s before slowly declining in the 2000s and slight revival in the 2010s. The term "Cantopop" itself was coined in 1978 after "Cantorock", a term first used in 1974. Cantopop reached its highest glory with a fanbase and concert reaching Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan especially with the influx of songs from Hong Kong movies.

Prudence Liew Mei-Gwan is a multi-platinum selling Hong Kong pop singer and Golden Horse Award winning actress, having released 16 studio albums and appearing in numerous films.

Background information

Most of the album's songs are infused with jazz elements, especially bossa nova, with many of Hong Kong's prominent jazz composers contributing. Because the music strayed from standard cantopop fare, only one single was released from the album. There are eight Cantonese songs and two original English compositions, one of which is a duet with a local jazz musician, Larry Hammond. The album includes two cover versions: "三十度 ( Thirty Degrees )" was originally the popular song, "The Girl from Ipanema". "Love Me" is the Bee Gees' song. [2] [3]

Bossa nova is a style of Brazilian music, which was developed and popularized in the 1950s and 1960s and is today one of the best-known Brazilian music styles abroad. The phrase bossa nova means literally "new trend" or "new wave". A lyrical fusion of samba and jazz, bossa nova acquired a large following in the 1960s, initially among young musicians and college students.

The Girl from Ipanema song by Antônio Carlos Jobim

"Garota de Ipanema" is a Brazilian bossa nova and jazz song. It was a worldwide hit in the mid-1960s and won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965. It was written in 1962, with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes. English lyrics were written later by Norman Gimbel.

"Love Me" is a song recorded by the Bee Gees, released on the 1976 album Children of the World. It was also included on the compilation album Love from the Bee Gees released only in the UK.

With the release of this album, Liew fulfilled her contract with Columbia Records and took a break for several years, emigrating with her children to San Francisco, USA. Her next release was the mandopop album, Love Yourself 愛自己, released in Taiwan in May 2000. Her next cantopop album was 15 years after this release, in October 2009, with The Queen of Hardships .

Mandopop refers to Mandarin popular music. The English term was coined around 1980 soon after "Cantopop" became a popular term for describing popular songs in Cantonese; "Mandopop" was used to describe Mandarin-language popular songs of that time, some of which were versions of Cantopop songs sung by the same singers with different lyrics to suit the different rhyme and tonal patterns of Mandarin. It is now used as a general term to describe popular songs performed in Mandarin.

The title of this album is a play on words of the classic Chinese saying, "日有所思,夜有所夢", which literally translates to "thoughts during the day, dreams in the night". The interpretation of this saying is that when you think about something enough during the day, you will dream about it at night as well.
